Age of Mythology is an iconic real-time strategy game developed by the Texas-based developer Ensemble Studios, first released in 2002.
The game resonated with players — both strategy enthusiasts and those who love games combining historical setting with fantasy and mythology.
Due to its popularity and high player ratings, the game received a renewed edition in 2014 — AoM Extended Edition, produced by SkyBox Labs. Ten years later, on September 4th, 2024, another remastered and improved edition was released — AoM Retold. This time, the production was handled by World’s Edge, known for the remake of the iconic Age of Empires II, titled Definitive Edition.

Gameplay
In terms of gameplay, neither Extended Edition nor Retold differ much from the original. The game is a typical strategy set in a mythological setting, where the goal is to develop a chosen civilization.
Players must focus on city development, technology, and military forces, gathering resources and planning strategic actions.
In the original release, there were three civilizations to pick from — Greek, Egyptian, and Norse. A fourth one — the Atlanteans — was added in the Titans DLC. Both Extended and Retold editions offer all four nations in the base game.
A key role in the game is played by the pantheon of gods (worship) of each chosen nation. Through it, players can use not only humans in battle but also various mythological creatures (Pegasi, Giants, Cyclopes, etc.), as well as dedicated spells (lightning strikes, summoning the Norse dragon, etc.).
Both the original and the remastered editions offer a campaign mode (with about 50 missions covering all available civilizations) and multiplayer mode.
Enhancements
If the gameplay remains the same, what has changed? In terms of enhancements, Extended Edition certainly introduced support for newer-generation computers — modern operating systems and widescreen resolutions.
The water, lighting, and day-night cycle were improved. The interface was redesigned to be clearer, more user-friendly, and more modern. Multiplayer matchmaking also saw significant improvements, thanks to the use of Steamworks.
Retold Edition, however, is essentially a complete remake of the game, taking the improvements a step further. It boasts much, much better, more modern graphics.
Not only were character models and environments upgraded, but new visual effects were added, and the sound design was improved (with more varied dialogues and sound effects matching the environment).
The camera work was also enhanced. The game offers a refreshed interface and is optimized for the latest PCs and new-gen consoles (Xbox Series X).
Core Differences
Over the years, Age of Mythology has undergone significant changes — from a graphically simple, isometric game to a title with graphics that are pleasing to the eye.
What are the most significant differences between Extended Edition and the latest Retold edition? First and foremost, there are significant improvements in the graphical and sound aspects, which will appeal both to veterans of the game and new players accustomed to polished, more realistic visuals.
A huge difference is also the new mechanics in multiplayer mode. Players can still participate in standard battles (for up to 12 people), where their civilizations fight against each other, but a cooperative mode — Arena of The Gods with procedurally generated maps — has also been introduced.
This means there will be countless scenarios to play! Another new feature is the map editor, allowing players to create their own maps and game scenarios.
Another important difference is that, unlike the previous two editions, Retold is also available on consoles.
Mods
Both Extended Edition and Retold support mods. Since the 2014 edition has been on the market for over a decade, there are already numerous modifications and improvements introduced by modders — from those offering unlimited food, gold, or population, to mods adding new buildings to cities or changing the appearance of characters.
Retold is a brand-new game, so there are currently fewer mods available, but it holds great potential for modders.
Age of Mythology: Retold vs AoM Extended Edition – which one is better?
As with many comparisons of game editions or versions, it all depends on what you’re looking for in a game.
If you want to experience AoM in its original, rougher form (but already enhanced and supplemented with content from the expansion) or if your hardware isn’t the most powerful, go for the Extended Edition.
This version is also perfect if you’re mainly interested in the campaign and competitive multiplayer matches.
However, if you’re someone who values graphics as an important element of the gaming experience and would like to try your hand at co-op with other players, choose the Retold edition.
Another point in favour of this edition is its availability on the XSX. So, if you only have access to a console, Retold will be the choice for you.
