BioShock
Release: | 2016-09-15 |
Genre: | Action & Shooter |
Developer: | 2K Australia |
To make things more exciting right away, let’s start the list with a solid entry. BioShock begins a widely acclaimed first-person shooter franchise – it’s surely a game that’s still worth being played, even today.
BioShock is a first-person shooter that takes place in the abandoned underwater city of Rapture – a solitary place that was made in order to allow more intelligent people and the elites to break free from government control and develop peacefully outside of any kind of external influence.
Things changed with the discovery of a highly addictive drug that was able to alter people’s DNA, granting those who could afford it all sorts of supernatural abilities. As a result, the city’s society became divided, creating a class conflict and turning a once peaceful place into a dystopia. You got there accidentally, but now it’s too late to turn back – you have to explore Rapture and play your role in the show.

Crysis
Release: | 2007-11-13 |
Genre: | Action & Shooter |
Developer: | Crytek Frankfurt |
Crysis is best known for its incredible visuals. The game looked amazing when it came out and it served as a benchmark to test the performance of the best computers available. But how does it look today?
Clearly, the year 2007 favored first-person shooters over other types of games, so it’s no surprise that another entry on the list happens to be yet another shooter. Crysis was praised for its top-notch graphics when it was released. An ordinary computer had trouble running the game smoothly, and even the more performance-oriented machines would occasionally choke when there was a lot of dynamic action with explosions and gunfire going on.
The best part about the game’s visuals is the fact that even today it still looks better than some of the more recent titles. But of course, graphics are just a part of the experience – gameplay is also important and Crysis, if anything, can’t be accused of having a boring one.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary
Release: | 2007-06-05 |
Genre: | Adventure |
Developer: | Buzz Monkey Software |
Fans of Lara Croft’s adventures also had a reason to rejoice in 2007. That’s because it was then when Tomb Raider: Anniversary was released.
Tomb Raider: Anniversary is an action-adventure game that focuses on the adventures of someone who could in simplest words be described as a female version of Indiana Jones. Lara Croft returns and this time she will be tasked with finding an ancient artifact known as the Scion of Atlantis.
In order to find the treasure, Lara will have to travel the world and solve a number of environmental puzzles that involve a lot of jumping, climbing, swimming, avoiding traps, and pushing and pulling certain objects around. There are also some action sections, where you will have to quickly deal with aggressive animals and other types of hostile creatures – thankfully, Lara’s got her pair of trusty pistols that should make short work of these kinds of issues.

The Orange Box
Release: | 2004-11-16 |
Genre: | Action & Shooter |
Developer: | Valve |
Valve also nicely surprised its fans in 2007 by releasing The Orange Box – a small collection of great Valve games that allows players to put their hands on some great titles at a discounted price.
The Orange Box is a collection of five popular Valve games: Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. Although TF2 is now free, making the box a slightly less appealing option to go for these days, the package is still a nice way to save some money on the rest of the included games.
If you don’t own the mentioned games or you didn’t have the opportunity to play them yet, you should really consider getting The Orange Box. Gordon Freeman’s efforts to save the world from alien forces, 3D environmental puzzles that involve the use of an iconic portal gun, and an incredibly addictive multiplayer team-based FPS with several different playable classes to choose from – all of that can be yours for just a fraction of the original price.

Unreal Tournament 3
Release: | 2007-11-19 |
Genre: | Action & Shooter |
Developer: | Epic Games |
Unreal Tournament also marked its return in 2007 – that’s when the fourth entry in the Unreal Tournament franchise was released.
Unreal Tournament 3 is an extremely dynamic first-person arena shooter that requires good reflexes to compete with others. It’s a perfect game to relax after an exhausting day at work, as it doesn’t require too much thinking – at its core, the gameplay is all about running around and shooting at everything that looks alive.
Before you jump into action, though, keep in mind that although Unreal Tournament can be played without other people and it even features a single-player campaign for you to enjoy, the multiplayer mode is undoubtedly the game’s strongest point and that’s where you’d usually want to spend your spare time. On a side note – if you decide to give UT3 a go, you may want to check out the Black Edition that brings a lot of new content to the original game.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Release: | 2007-11-12 |
Genre: | Action & Shooter |
Developer: | Infinity Ward |
If you’re looking for a more serious approach to shooters, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has got you covered. Grab your weapon and go help your teammates – they won’t make it without you.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a first-person shooter that focuses on modern-day Middle East-themed conflicts, which is a nice change, considering the fact, that most previous CoD games revolved around the World War II era. Although the game offers an action-packed single-player campaign, it’s rather short – it’s obvious that the game was made with a multiplayer mode in mind, so if you’re looking for some online FPS fun, this is the game you’re looking for.
There are leaderboards for those who love some competition, and character loadout customization options, allowing players to change things to their liking. It’s also worth noting that multiplayer still works and is surprisingly active, despite the fact that the game is already well over a decade old – this means that you can still put your hands on tons of multiplayer unlockables the game has to offer.

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars
Release: | 2007-03-28 |
Genre: | Strategy |
Developer: | EA Los Angeles |
Speaking of real-time strategy games, one can’t forget about Command & Conquer series – in 2007 EA decided to please its fans and released a direct sequel to a classic 1999 game, C&C: Tiberian Sun.
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars is a real-time strategy, where two superpowers – Global Defense Initiative and Brotherhood of Nod – fight over the mysterious resource called Tiberium. GDI seeks ways to destroy Tiberium, as it has a destructive impact on the environment and thus threatens the existence of the entire Earth’s life, while the brotherhood believes that Tiberium can be used to transcend humanity and help it reach the next technological step.
Unexpectedly, the war attracts the attention of a third faction that seems to be hostile towards both human organizations – the alien forces known as Scrin. Similar to Supreme Commander, the game comes with a quite long single-player campaign, but it is multiplayer where the most fun is to be had.

Portal
Release: | 2007-10-10 |
Genre: | Adventure |
Developer: | Valve |
For the final game on the list, we’ve got something that was already mentioned as a part of Valve’s The Orange Box – Portal, the first game from an insanely good puzzle-platform franchise.
Portal is a puzzle-platform game that revolves around the use of a portal gun – a special gun capable of creating two types of portals: orange and blue. Once placed on suitable surfaces, the two portals become connected and if something enters one of them, it will come out from another one. It’s a simple yet genius idea that creates a lot of possibilities when it comes to solving environmental puzzles.
Your task is to simply make your way through increasingly difficult levels to reach the end – but don’t be fooled, as sometimes it’s much harder than it looks. If you find this idea appealing, you will definitely want to also try Portal 2 – a game that added not only a number of new gameplay mechanics to make everything more exciting, but also a special co-op mode with a selection of entirely new, multiplayer-exclusive levels, where close cooperation between two players is mandatory to achieve success.
