Assetto Corsa

Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition

Release:2014-02-27
Genre:Adventure
Developer:Capcom Production Studio 4

Some may be surprised to see a 2005 game on the list, but here we’re not talking about the original RE4, but about the Ultimate HD version from 2014 – a version that gave the game a second life.

Resident Evil 4 continues the Resident Evil series, but this time developers tried to deliver something slightly different. As a result, the game focuses more on combat rather than puzzles and exploration, which can be considered a nice change of pace. Don’t get too cocky, though – you’re just a special agent, you’re not immortal. Pay attention to the surroundings and the incoming hordes of parasite-controlled enemies, or you may quickly find out how fragile a human body really is.

The Ultimate HD Edition plays mostly the same as the original game – gameplay remained largely untouched. It’s the refreshed graphics that make the difference here, and it’s well worth the money.

Key features
  • A classic survival horror presented in a new, more modern way
  • An intriguing story that revolves around a dangerous, mind-controlling parasite
  • Gameplay that combines fast-paced action, gunplay, quick time events, and puzzle solving
  • Great, terrifying atmosphere, and memorable characters

Divinity: Original Sin

Release:2015-10-27
Genre:Adventure
Developer:Larian Studios

Divinity: Original Sin may not be among the most popular role-playing games out there, but it surely is one of the highest-rated ones, especially when speaking of games released in 2014.

Divinity: Original Sin is a role-playing game that takes place in a fantasy world, full of mythical creatures, legendary treasures, and formidable opponents. The game’s story focuses on two main characters who seem to be destined to achieve great things when they work together. Divinity combines turn-based combat with great voice acting, a beautiful and colorful world, and a lot of humorous dialogues, to give players one of the most immersive and casual-friendly role-playing experiences available.

It’s also worth noting the game’s well-made co-operation mode, where both players can influence the outcome of the quests and decisions they make. Whenever there’s an argument, players can play a simple minigame to see who will have the final word. If you’ve got a friend to play with, be sure to check this game out together – it’s super fun.

Key features
  • An epic role-playing journey in a vast, fantasy world
  • Advanced character customization – create your very own personal hero and test his might in fierce, turn-based encounters

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Release:2014-11-20
Genre:RPG
Developer:BioWare

Are you ready for a new fantasy quest? Then become the Inquisitor and close the mysterious Breach that spawns demonic creatures and threatens the very existence of mankind.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is a perfect example of how to save the franchise. Although Dragon Age II was by no means a bad game, it was criticized for the lack of complexity of its predecessor – Inquisition was meant to fix that and return to the series’ roots, but still remain as approachable as possible for newcomers and novice players. The community appreciated the change, turning DA: Inquisition into one of Bioware’s best-selling games of all time. If you’re curious what epic adventures, dangers, and challenges are waiting for the players in this carefully tailored world that lives its own life, then pick your copy of the game and jump right into the action.

Key features
  • A beautiful, semi-open fantasy world that can be explored freely
  • 4 playable races and 3 different character classes that make it easy to create your dream hero who will suit your playstyle best
  • Combat that rewards teamwork and encourages smart usage of available abilities
  • A fun co-op multiplayer mode that resembles a dungeon crawler

Assassin's Creed Unity

Release:2014-11-13
Genre:Adventure
Developer:Ubisoft Montreal

2014 was also the year of another Assassin’s Creed game release – AC Unity. Despite rather mixed reviews at first, the game turned out to be a worthy mention in the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Assassin’s Creed Unity, just like its predecessors in the well-known AC franchise, focuses on the never-ending conflict between the Templar Order, which believes that only total control can lead humanity to a brighter future, and the Assassins, who believe that people should be free and make their own decisions. The game puts emphasis on stealth elements – silent kills with the famous hidden blade or deadly crossbow, sneaking past guards, and so on, but if there’s no other way, one can also resort to brute force and slash his way through packs of enemy soldiers. The game features a huge open-world environment, which, mixed with its breathtaking visuals, creates an environment that you won’t soon forget.

Key features
  • A huge open-world environment that can be roamed and explored freely
  • An appealing story that mixes real-world historical characters and events with the fictional conflict between Assassins and Templars
  • Gameplay focused on staying low and utilizing stealth tactics
  • Gorgeous presentation layer with astonishing landscapes and highly detailed surroundings

Dead Rising 3

Release:2014-09-05
Genre:Adventure
Developer:Capcom Game Studio Vancouver

If you think that Dead Rising 3 is just yet another dark and depressing zombie apocalypse survival shooter, then you’re in for a nice surprise, because this game throws realism out of the window and brings a ton of pure, ridiculous fun in exchange.

Do you fancy some fast-paced action in a zombie-infected world, where gameplay leans more towards the ridiculous side of the realism spectrum? Dead Rising 3 is exactly that, and it will surely bring a smile to your face on numerous occasions, especially when you start exploring the available arsenal of deadly weapons that can be used during encounters. An explosive toy bear, a giant hookah, a horse head mask – you get the idea. There are, of course, some serious ones, too, such as flamethrowers, shotguns, and handguns, but who would’ve used these, if you can fight with the use of an electric guitar, a female mannequin, or with a pair of chainsaws.

Key features
  • A dynamic action-adventure game in a huge open-world environment
  • Unrestricted gameplay that revolves around murdering hordes of ravenous zombies
  • A huge selection of available weapons to find and craft, including tons of not-so-obvious ones, such as explosive toy bears
  • A great multiplayer mode that multiplies the fun

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Release:2014-09-30
Genre:Adventure
Developer:Monolith Productions

There were some amazing AAA titles that came out in 2014. Some of them we already mentioned above, but there’s also Shadow of Mordor – a game that will take you straight to Tolkien’s universe.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is an action-adventure game based upon the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, which means that you will have the unique opportunity to interact with Tolkien’s legendarium and experience it all firsthand. The game received praise for its atmosphere and the fact that it stays true to the spirit of the original works – this ensures that even if you didn’t read Tolkien’s novels yet, you will be able to fully appreciate what Monolith Productions has prepared for you.

The game features a huge open world that can be explored freely. It also gives players a lot of room when it comes to character development – there are various upgrade options waiting for you, and each will make your character considerably stronger. This will come in handy when you’ll be trying to infiltrate Sauron’s army and dominate his generals within the game’s sophisticated Nemesis system.

Key features
  • An epic adventure in a fantasy world based upon the works of J. R. R. Tolkien
  • A vast open-world environment with collectibles scattered around to ignite the spark of an explorer in you
  • One-of-a-kind Nemesis system – spy on enemy leaders, learn about their weaknesses, track them down, and interrogate them to infiltrate Sauron’s ranks
  • The fluid combat system, character progression, and a lot of unlockable abilities

Dark Souls II

Release:2015-04-01
Genre:RPG
Developer:FromSoftware

Finally, there’s also Dark Souls II – a game that will test your patience by killing you over and over with its cunning enemies, hidden traps, and surprising encounters.

FromSoftware’s games are well known for their challenging difficulty level, and it’s no different in Dark Souls II, an incredibly addictive action role-playing fantasy game from 2014. The title revolves mainly around killing increasingly difficult bosses, but exploration also plays an important role, as it allows you to find hidden treasures, some of which could be incredibly helpful during certain enemy encounters.

One of the coolest features of the entire Dark Souls franchise – besides the amazing skill-based combat system – is its multiplayer interactions. Although the game is played in the single-player mode most of the time, other players can be summoned to help you fight a boss, or they can randomly invade your world to kill you and claim your souls. Players can also leave simple messages on the floor for other players to read – this way people can warn each other about incoming dangers or point them in the direction of hidden places.

Dark Souls is definitely a must-play. Just try to not destroy your personal computer out of anger after you died 50 times in a row to a certain boss.

Key features
  • The gameplay focused on exploration and killing incredibly strong bosses
  • A fluid combat system that requires good stamina management and timing – a well-timed parry can turn the tides of a duel
  • Extremely challenging difficulty level at first, but becomes easier as you learn more about the game and master your combat skills
  • Rich lore that requires a bit of work to piece it all together, as it’s mostly hidden in various item descriptions

If you’re bored with video gaming because there are no recent games that would seem appealing to you, maybe it would be a good idea to check some older titles instead. The year 2014 brought us some great PC games to enjoy, from indie to AAA, from simulations to action-adventures – it’s more than likely that there’s still something you didn’t play or something that would be great to return to.
