Borderlands 4

Borderlands 4 comes in with big promises and big ambitions and, by all accounts, it delivers on them.

The new installment of the legendary, practically archetypical looter-shooter, comes in swinging, and not just because it brings in new traversal options that include a grappling hook. It also positions your badass (or several badasses, it wouldn’t truly be a Borderlands game if it didn’t have co-op) against a tyrannical overlord in a chaotic, explosive, and not very po-faced fight for freedom and more guns.

And guns you will most certainly have, so many that the number might as well be infinite as far as your ability to get all the unique variants goes. And somehow it might be that that it’s not the guns themselves, but your new crew of questionable heroes that will make your day. The new crew includes a brand new Siren and a grizzled warrior wielding elemental abilities like it’s no big deal.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Expedition 33 is without a doubt one of the most remarkable games of the year, and the year isn’t even over yet.

The work of a small studio, it delivered commendably on every aspect and it’s almost painful that some of the best features would also be considered spoilers and so it would be rude to talk about them!

Let’s just say that the game begins when a new expedition is preparing a city of Lumiere, inspired by the French Belle Époque, to confront a mysterious Paintress, who annually erases people from existence based on their age. Unfortunately, the expedition encounters devastating problems, but it’s better left for you to discover on your own.

There’s also a thrilling turn-based combat system powered both by an excellent progression system and elements which require good timing and a good eye to spot enemy weakpoints to shoot down. The game remains incredibly stylish throughout, making sure every ability not only does something useful, but also looks spectacular.

It’s an amazing game, an obvious GotY contender, and if you have any fondness for role-playing games, you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t play it.

Ready or Not

It’s always nice to get a new tactical FPS. In the case of Ready or Not, it’s centered on the operations of a SWAT team in the a city of Los Sueños.

Interestingly, at its core it’s a co-operative, rather than a competitive game. It invites a solo player (or a team of up to five) to take on a variety of challenging scenarios, where every bullet might end up deadly, so rushing in without a plan or backup is a surefire method of getting lead in your head.

As a special treat for solo players, RoN also features a Commander mode, which involved managing the (mostly AI) SWAT team’s mental and physical well-being to ensure they can perform their duties to the highest standards.

Ready or Not is a thrilling and challenging proposition for fans of tactical shooters, don’t sleep on it, if you’re one of them!

Dying Light: The Beast

The Dying Light series returns, and with it Kyle Crane, the unlucky protagonist of the original DL, in Dying Light: The Beast.

He has a unique problem at his hands, having escaped captivity with an insidious strand of twisted zombie DNA trying to get the better of his human side. After thirteen years of being experimented on by a mysterious Baron, Kyle has a grudge to settle, and physical abilities enhanced by the zombie part of him.

Outside of that promising plot premise (and who doesn’t love a good revenge story?), it’s Dying Light as everybody loves it. Lots of first-person parkour across rooftops, violent driving on the roads, brutal melee and ranged combat, and the classic day-night cycle inviting the more dangerous zombies onto the streets when the sun goes down. Kyle’s enhanced strength and durability might also not be the full extent of his current hybrid existence.
