Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Release date2020-11-10
GenreAction, Role-playing
DeveloperUbisoft

The latest (at the time of writing) entry into the long-running series, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla invites you aboard a Viking ship sailing towards the merry shores of England. As a Norse warrior Eivor you’ll do plenty of the good, old-fashioned looting and settling, and also a lot of the typical AC “ancient aliens” stuff which allows Excalibur, Mjolnir, and monster to exist in the historical setting.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Valhalla also goes all in on the RPG elements introduced in Odyssey, with several skill lines to spend points on, choices to make, and plenty of equipment to collect. The world is also well-realized, with wonderful vistas, a satisfying number of thematic side-activities to spend some downtime on, such as building cairns. ACV is a great choice if you want a Viking adventure in a historical setting.

Key Features
  • Large, detailed maps
  • Interesting protagonist
  • A trip to early medieval British Isles
  • Expansions add more regions, like parts of Ireland and France

Anno 1800

Release date2019-04-16
GenreCity-building, real-time strategy
DeveloperBlue Byte

The Anno series has been running strong since 1998, and 2019’s Anno 1800 is but the latest edition of the series, exploring the economics or running a city in the 19th century. That mean all the trapping of the Industrial Age, including emphasis on factory work, as well as settling the New World. You also have to keep your citizens happy, or your supply and productions chains won’t go you much good.

Anno 1800

A neat new addition is the blueprint feature which allows you to plan your city layout without having to commit resources. When you’re done you can build everything instantly! Anno 1800 is a fantastic proposition whether you’re going for the robust story campaign, a freeform sandbox experience, or trying your luck in the multiplayer.

Key Features
  • Set during the Industrial Age
  • Several hefty expansions
  • Blueprints are an extremely useful addition
  • You have to balance industrialization and your citizens’ happiness

Rainbow Six Siege

Release date2015-12-01
GenreAction
DeveloperUbisoft Montreal

Rainbow Six: Siege is a multiplayer first-person shooter focused on tactical PvP engagements between highly specialized Operators. In other words: it’s effectively a hero-shooter themed around counterterrorism. Each operator has unique abilities, including scouting gadgets and portable wall. Both are important, because dying is easy, walls are breakable, and charging blindly in gets you killed.

Rainbow Six Siege

The roster is now several dozen strong, and each operator is designated as a member of the Attacking or the Defending team. Siege matches are fast, challenging, and require a very good knowledge of the map and operator abilities, both on your team and among the opponents. The best thing is that new operators are constantly being added to keep things fresh.

Key Features
  • Highly competitive
  • Destructible environments
  • Large, growing roster
  • Each operator’s abilities provide interesting tactical options

Watch Dogs: Legion

Release date2020-10-29
GenreAction-adventure
DeveloperUbisoft

After a visit to Chicago in the first Watch Dogs, and a trip to San Francisco in the second, Watch Dogs: Legion travels overseas to a 2030s, cyberpunkish version of London. The problem is, London is controlled by the invasive ctOS network aiding a private security company, Albion. Not an exactly happy circumstances, but that’s something the DedSec hacktivist group is trying to change.

Watch Dogs: Legion

The gameplay basics stay the same: you run around hacking the world, fighting the enforcers, and solving momentary crises. The twist is that instead of controlling a pre-set protagonist, you recruit procedurally generated NPCs and then control them, whatever their specialties and quirks may be. Playing for a while as a drone-hacking grandma is a very real possibility.

Key Features
  • Procedurally generated roster of playable characters
  • Very well recreated and cyberpunk-ified London
  • Solid gameplay foundations
  • Interesting story

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint

Release date2019-10-04
GenreOnline tactical shooter
DeveloperUbisoft Bucharest

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is a narrative follow up for 2017’s GR Wildlands (described elsewhere on this list). While its predecessor had you traipsing around in Bolivia, Breakpoint instead takes you to a fictional island chain on the Pacific Ocean, called Auroa. The story campaign follows a US SpecOps guy who investigates shady dealings of a chip manufacturer stations on Auroa.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint

Story and setting aside, Breakpoint is a third-person action game which put emphasis on covert operations. It won’t stop you if you want to blow something up, but it’s not Doom, you aren’t the toughest person on the map. Taking care to use camouflage or stealth will likely work out better for you. Well, you and your friends, because Breakpoint features 4-player co-op for your spec op.

Key Features
  • Several distinct character classes
  • Huge map: a fictional island chain on the Pacific ocean
  • Four player co-op
  • A mix of regenerating health and lasting injuries

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Release date2018-10-05
GenreAction
DeveloperUbisoft Quebec

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s action takes place earlier than any other entry’s: 431-422 BC, specifically. Even AC Origins takes places a few centuries later. As one could deduce from the title, it takes places in Ancient Greece, during the Peloponnesian War. You’re controlling a Spartan mercenary who has some lingering family issues, as well as strong tie to the mysteries of AC’s resident ancient aliens, the Isu.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

You can choose whether you want to explore the vast map and climb its monuments as Kassandra or Alexios, and the game will adapt neatly simply by referring to you as “Misthios”. You’ll also get to improve your character’s abilities (in three skill trees) and equipment (with different rarities and levels), because Odyssey is a part of the RPG-ification of the series which started in Origins.

Key Features
  • Interesting expansions
  • Engaging, dynamic combat
  • Naval combat comes back in full force
  • RPG elements

Monopoly Plus

Release date2017-09-07
GenreCasual
DeveloperUbisoft Pune

There isn’t much to say about Monopoly Plus. It’s a world-famous board game, except in a digital form and embellished with all sorts of bells and whistles. Instead of a drab look at the board, the spaces are animated, pieces hop around, and buildings spring into being. It’s kind of like playing Monopoly in a specialized mod for SimCity. It’s quite refreshing, and a good way to play the game online.

Monopoly Plus

You can also play alone; the game is happy to substitute AI for other players. Better yet, if you like playing with house rules, there are six options you can choose from while setting up a new game. At this point the only thing truly missing from the game is a chance to stare angrily at the other player and accuse them of cheating.

Key Features
  • The most famous board game in the world, now in official digital form
  • The board is now improved with dynamic 3D models
  • Built-in houserules
  • You can play solo if you need it

Far Cry 5

Release date2018-03-27

Far Cry 5

To help you in your endeavors you’ll get to recruit a few allies who can join you in the field, and you’ll also work with the local resistance trying to take down the bad Seeds. Otherwise, you have a huge open world with beautiful US heartland vistas to explore, enemy encampments to take down, fish to catch, and lots of random chaotic encounters to enjoy while you’re at it.

Key Features
  • A customizable player character for the first time in the series
  • A diverse bunch of weirdoes who can join you in combat
  • Playable in co-op
  • Neat expansions, including one taking place ON MARS

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands

Release date2017-03-06
GenreAdventure
DeveloperUbisoft Annecy

We’ve mentioned this game when we described its sequel GR: Breakpoint, now’s the time to tell you more about it. In Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands you’re taken to the vast open world map depicting parts of Bolivia. A Ghost Recon fireteam of US operatives is sent there because a new drug cartel is making trouble and has to be taken down.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands

Wildlands feature a huge, beautiful open world map, which has little interest in telling you how to approach the tasks ahead of you. You have your team, you have plenty of gadgets (such as scouting drones), weapons and vehicles…now go and do your job. Of course, you can play the game in co-op for up to four player total, a complete fireteam ready to take on any challenge.

Key Features
  • Vast map
  • Plenty of tools you could use to complete your missions
  • You can complete the campaign in co-op
  • Several DLC with new missions

The Crew 2

Release date2018-06-29
GenreRacing, MMO
DeveloperIvory Tower

Published by Ubisoft, but developed by Ivory Tower, The Crew 2 is an open world racing game which doesn’t limit you to just land vehicles. In fact, you can switch instantly between a car, a plane, and a motorboat without losing speed or changing locations. It’s a very satisfying mechanic, letting you pull off some rather impressive stunts if you time your transitions well enough.

The Crew 2

You also have a lot of space to practice, because the world is a “best of…” version of the map of the contiguous US. You could travel from coast to coast, passing only the best vistas and coolest locations. It’s like a travel montage of a well-planned road trip. You can participate in several kinds of races, including off-road events and street racing competitions, and you can invite friends to join you.

Key Features
  • Huge map
  • Smoothly switch between a plane, a car, and a motorboat
  • A story that is a perfectly fine excuse to participate in every featured event
  • Very multiplayer-friendly

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

Release date2013-11-19
GenreAdventure
DeveloperUbisoft Montreal

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was a ray of Caribbean sunshine which was quite welcome after a bit of a downer that AC3 was, mood-wise. Featuring a headstrong Welsh pirate Edward Kenway, the grandfather of AC3’s protagonist Connor, Black Flag is effectively “Assassin’s Creed, but make it pirates” and it’s very good at that: a deeply enjoyable bit of swashbuckling and treasure hunting.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

In-between missions you’ll upgrade your ship, Jackdaw, dive for sunken treasures, listen to your crew singing shanties, exchange broadside salvos with other ships, and hang out with the Blackbeard himself. AC4: Black Flag not only has a great, entertaining gameplay, but it also looks fantastic, capturing the atmosphere of the pirate-era Caribbean very well, both on land and on sun-lit open seas.

Key Features
  • Edward Kenway, voice by Matt Ryan, is a very fun protagonist to follow
  • Assassin’s Creed pirates
  • Technically a prequel to Assassin’s Creed III
  • Still looks beautiful

More games by Ubisoft still await

Of course, the list above doesn’t feature all Ubisoft games, not remotely. We haven’t mentioned classics like Prince of Persia, and we’ve omitted Rayman, for example… not in this edition, anyway. Some of the most played will be added in the future, to always keep this game list fresh.

Virtually all of Ubi-games are available through Ubisoft Connect, formerly known as Uplay, but you can get them on other platforms too. Wherever you play them, you can bet on entertaining gameplay, vivid worlds, and lots of emergent fun regardless of the genre.
