The heist has changed considerably since launch, though. Repeat setup now costs more, low-value primary targets pay less than they once did, guards can detect bodies, and solo runs have a much longer cooldown. This updated guide covers how Cayo Perico actually works in 2026.

How to Unlock the Cayo Perico Heist
Head to The Music Locker beneath The Diamond Casino & Resort and meet Miguel Madrazo. This unlocks the Kosatka submarine on Warstock Cache & Carry.
The base Kosatka costs GTA$2,200,000 and acts as your Cayo Perico planning headquarters. You do not need a high-end apartment, Arcade or Facility to host the heist.
Your first run centers on the Madrazo Files. After that, each new attempt rolls another primary target and costs GTA$100,000 to set up.
Gather Intel – What Should You Scout?
You do not need to photograph every palm tree on the island. For efficient repeat runs, concentrate on information that affects your route and loot.
- Primary Target – mandatory on every run.
- Drainage Tunnel – one of the most useful stealth entrances.
- Secondary Loot – especially Cocaine at the Airstrip, North Dock or Main Dock.
- Guard Clothing – useful for alternate stealth routes.
- Supply Truck – can provide another compound entry option.
- Grappling Equipment and Bolt Cutters – useful for specific routes, but not essential if you use the Cutting Torch.
Once permanent points such as the Drainage Tunnel have been discovered, you do not need to rediscover them every time. Secondary loot and several optional items can change between runs.
Which Cayo Perico Prep Missions Matter?
The exact prep list depends on your chosen approach, but an efficient stealth run usually revolves around:
- Approach Vehicle: Kosatka for the simplest direct route, or Longfin for more flexible solo looting.
- Cutting Torch: essential for the Drainage Tunnel and useful for opening locks quietly.
- Fingerprint Cloner: required to access the basement route.
- Plasma Cutter or Safe Codes: determined by your primary target.
- Weapons: choose whichever loadout you are comfortable landing clean headshots with.
- Suppressors: strongly recommended for stealth.
Disruption missions are optional. If your plan is to stay undetected, spending time weakening armor, weapons or air support usually provides little benefit.
Cayo Perico Loot Values in 2026
Primary Targets
*The Panther Statue is an event-only Primary Target. Do not expect it during a normal week unless Rockstar has specifically enabled it.
The Madrazo Files are worth GTA$1,100,000 and appear during your first completion rather than normal repeat runs.
Secondary Loot
Solo priority: Cocaine is normally the strongest freely accessible secondary loot. Two full Cocaine stacks fill your bag.
Team priority: Gold is worth more per bag, but compound Gold is locked behind dual-keycard doors and therefore requires at least two players.

Hard Mode, Elite Challenge and Cooldowns

- Elite Challenge: GTA$50,000 on Normal or GTA$100,000 on Hard.
For the Elite Challenge you need a sub-15-minute finale, full loot bags, no failed hacks, no deaths and a clean enough run to satisfy the detection requirement. Quick Restart forfeits the Elite bonus.
There are also separate one-time Awards, such as GTA$200,000 for your first Cayo completion and GTA$100,000 for completing it solo. Do not confuse those one-time awards with the repeatable Elite payout.
Best Cayo Perico Solo Route
There are two routes worth learning.
Easy Stealth Route: Kosatka + Drainage Tunnel
- Choose the Kosatka approach.
- Enter through the Drainage Tunnel.
- Avoid unnecessary kills because guards can discover bodies.
- Reach the office and take the safe.
- Complete the fingerprint hack.
- Steal the Primary Target.
- Leave through the Main Gate.
- Grab a bike, head toward the coast and swim away from the island.
This is extremely simple, but if you enter the compound before filling your loot bag, you may need to visit external loot locations afterward.
Better Loot Route: Longfin + Secondaries First
Experienced solo players often prefer the Longfin. Use it to visit the Airstrip or docks first, fill your bag with Cocaine or another good combination, then take the boat to the Drainage Tunnel.
Once the bag is full, steal the Primary Target, leave the compound and escape directly into the ocean. This structure is especially good for Elite Challenge attempts because you do not need to cross the island looking for loot after leaving El Rubio’s compound.
Cayo Perico Solo vs Team
A coordinated two-player team can be extremely efficient because the host can still take up to 85% while gaining access to Gold. Solo remains better if you simply want full control.
How Much Money Do You Actually Keep?
The number displayed as the Potential Take is not the same as the amount that reaches your bank account.
After the first playthrough, the finale is subject to a 10% fencing fee and Pavel’s 2% cut. You also paid GTA$100,000 to start the repeat run.
Your real profit therefore depends on:
- Primary Target
- Secondary Loot
- Office Safe cash
- Hard Mode
- Elite Challenge
- Damage taken while carrying secondary loot
- Crew split
- GTA$100,000 setup fee
This is why fixed claims such as “every Cayo run pays GTA$1.7 million” are misleading. A Tequila run with mediocre secondary loot is very different from a Hard Mode Pink Diamond run with a full bag.
Best Repeat-Run Strategy in 2026
- Check the Primary Target before planning the rest of your route.
- Scout Cocaine locations when playing solo.
- Use Gold when playing with a reliable teammate.
- Take the office safe every run.
- Avoid unnecessary guard kills because bodies can trigger detection.
- Use the Longfin if your best secondary loot is outside the compound.
- Use Hard Mode when it fits your schedule rather than forcing a bad grinding loop.
- Remember the 72-hour loot-balancing system. High-value Primary Targets become less likely for a period after a valuable score, while Rockstar compensates with stronger Secondary Target opportunities.
