Ranni the Witch’s questline stands as one of the longest and most significant narrative arcs in Elden Ring. It functions as a parallel main storyline that stretches across much of the Lands Between and culminates in the Age of Stars ending while rewarding players with the Dark Moon Greatsword.

TL;DR — Ranni Quest Rewards & Ending
  • Unlocks the Age of Stars ending
  • Rewards the Dark Moon Greatsword
  • Opens Nokron, Nokstella, Lake of Rot, Moonlight Altar
  • Requires defeating General Radahn and Astel
  • Intertwines with Blaidd, Iji, Seluvis, and Sellen

The journey moves through multiple regions, demands several major boss victories, and opens areas that remain completely inaccessible through standard progression. Taken as a whole, it operates less like a side quest and more like a fully integrated second campaign within the base game.

Ranni the Witch Questline: First Encounter With Ranni

The first meeting takes place in Limgrave. After obtaining Torrent, return to the Church of Elleh at night. A blue spectral figure appears and introduces herself as Renna. She gives you the Spirit Calling Bell and Lone Wolf Ashes before disappearing. The moment feels minor, yet it quietly sets up one of the most important arcs in the game.

The next stage requires reaching Liurnia of the Lakes. In the northwestern section of the region stands Caria Manor. The area contains magical enemies and aggressive crawling hands that punish poor positioning. Moving through the manor leads to Royal Knight Loretta. Defeating her unlocks access to the Three Sisters.

Three Sisters and Entering Ranni’s Service

Three Sisters consists of three towers hidden behind magical seals. Ranni’s Rise stands at the center. At the top, Ranni offers the chance to serve her. Accepting this proposal formally begins the full questline.

On the lower level, speak with War Counselor Iji, Preceptor Seluvis, and Blaidd. Each character supports a different branch of the unfolding plan. Completing these conversations lifts the barrier that prevents you from leaving the tower grounds.

The first objective focuses on locating Nokron, Eternal City.

Siofra River, Radahn Festival, and Nokron

Blaidd travels to Mistwood in eastern Limgrave. The Siofra River Well elevator descends into a vast underground region defined by towering pillars and glowing structures. Enemies rely heavily on ranged attacks and coordinated pressure.

Seluvis directs you toward Sorceress Sellen after providing a letter. Sellen explains that Starscourge Radahn must fall before Nokron can open, shifting focus toward Caelid and the Radahn Festival.

Redmane Castle in southern Caelid hosts the Radahn Festival. After speaking with the organizer, a portal opens to the Wailing Dunes. The Radahn fight spans a massive battlefield designed for mounted combat, with multiple NPC summon signs available throughout.

Victory triggers a cinematic in which a falling star crashes into Limgrave, revealing the path to Nokron.

Inside Nokron, players defeat Mimic Tear and navigate Night’s Sacred Ground to obtain the Fingerslayer Blade. Delivering it advances the quest and ends Seluvis’s storyline permanently.

Carian Study Hall and the Cursemark of Death

After receiving the Fingerslayer Blade, Ranni grants the Carian Inverted Statue. Placing it in the Carian Study Hall flips the structure upside down, leading to the Divine Tower of Liurnia.

At the summit lies the Cursemark of Death along with the Stargazer Heirloom talisman, which boosts Intelligence for magic-focused builds.

Renna’s Rise, Nokstella, and Lake of Rot

Renna’s Rise becomes accessible later. Inside, the Snow Witch armor set and a portal to Ainsel River Main await. Interacting repeatedly with the Miniature Ranni Doll progresses the quest.

Nokstella tightens the difficulty. After defeating the Baleful Shadow and acquiring the Discarded Palace Key, players retrieve the Dark Moon Ring from Rennala’s chamber in Raya Lucaria.

The path descends into the Lake of Rot, where Scarlet Rot builds rapidly. Careful preparation and activating stone platforms ease traversal toward the Grand Cloister.

Beyond lies Astel, Naturalborn of the Void. Defeating Astel unlocks access to the Moonlight Altar.

Moonlight Altar and Unlocking the Age of Stars Ending

At the Cathedral of Manus Celes, Ranni’s dormant body rests beside a slain Two Fingers. Using the Dark Moon Ring completes the ritual. Ranni awakens, names the player her consort, and departs.

The Dark Moon Greatsword becomes the primary reward. It scales with Intelligence, applies frost buildup, and gains projectile heavy attacks after activation without draining additional FP per wave.

After defeating the final boss, a blue summon sign appears in Fracture Marika. Activating it triggers the Age of Stars ending, presenting a distant, moon-guided order separate from the Greater Will.

Ranni’s Rebellion and the Dark Moon Legacy

Ranni orchestrates the Night of the Black Knives, stealing a fragment of the Rune of Death to assassinate Godwyn the Golden. She abandons her flesh, allowing her spirit to survive within a Snow Witch doll. The Cursemark of Death reveals only half the truth, as its counterpart remains with Godwyn beneath Leyndell.

Blaidd’s tragic fate underscores the cost of rebellion, while Iji’s end reinforces the risks of defying the Greater Will.

The Dark Moon Greatsword continues FromSoftware’s Moonlight tradition, blending frost buildup with Intelligence scaling and efficient projectile attacks.

The Age of Stars ending reflects Ranni’s philosophy: distance instead of domination. Whether that distance represents freedom or abandonment remains open to interpretation, making this questline one of Elden Ring’s most debated narrative paths.
