Bestsellers and fresh hits

This year saw the release of quite a few high-profile games people had been awaiting for a long time. Early on we got Metro Exodus, the third game telling the story of post-apocalyptic Russia, but instead of dwelling still in the underground metro tunnels, Artyom and family left to investigate the world above, with intriguing results. Just a month later, everyone’s minds were on Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and its tight and tense parry-heavy combat systems as well as its fantastical imagining of the Sengoku-era Japan. FromSoftware once again proved to be the masters of fair but demanding difficulty levels, getting your blood boiling to get you warm for Christmas.

After a strong start, things kept the pace. Borderlands 3 launched, bringing more of the familiar gameplay to fans starved for the ridiculous looter-shooter series. Red Dead Redemption 2 came to PC, and with it one of the best western games in history. Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding came and confused everyone a little bit more, but a lot of people fell in love with it’s high concept. FIFA 20 iterated once more on the well-known formula, taking the football action to the streets. Finally Jedi: Fallen Order proved that singleplayer Star Wars games have their place, and that ponchos exist in space.

Some games from earlier years also stayed relevant. FrostPunk is just perfect for winter, and worth getting, especially with an expansion announced, set before the eternal winter. Monster Hunter: World is still chock full of things to do, and come January a humongous Iceborne expansion is coming to PCs, bringing enough content to be a standalone game. Meanwhile ARK: Survival Evolved doesn’t have any announced expansions, but still has a robust and active community, so you could deck the halls together on the second day of Christmas in a base smelling of freshly cut timber. And there are even more hot, top-tier games around…

Modern classics

the witcher iii: wild hunt monster

What if you’re looking for something that’s already time-tested and proven great? There’s always a place for a few more classics in one’s game library, which makes them great Christmas presents.
Take The Witcher III Game of the Year Edition, for example, with its core theme being one of family and the coming cold, making it just in tune with what winter holidays are best known for already. The final expansion even let’s you settle down with a loved one. On the topic of winter and settling down, Skyrim Legendary Edition has it covered (by snow), and since it contains all the expansions and add-ons there’s also one where you build your own mansion, named aptly: Hearthfire.

If cold and dark skies are a bit too much, GTA V takes place in California, and one of the protagonists, Michael, is a family man, even if more than a little troubled. Or you could go all in on leaving for a hotter climate, and take a trip down to Vegas across the Nevada desert in Fallout: New Vegas. Both games have the freedom and the storyline that you’ll remember for a long time.

Finally, instead of giving someone coal for being naughty, consider turning Dark Souls into an entertaining, if punishing alternative. One of the best games of the generation, with excellent world design, and combat system that crushed even the mighty… but also let them get good at it.

These are but the taste of the modern classics you could get, with many more just a click or two away.

Where lies the Santa’s sack?

If you’re wondering where to get the games, and where to get the money to buy all of that, the solution to both problems is in one place: the G2A Marketplace. During the Winter sale on G2A you can find these, and many other excellent Christmas gifts, and you’ll find that the prices are more than reasonable and accessible, with dozens of great deals waiting for you.
