Table of Contents
Combat Has Been Completely Modernized
The biggest gameplay change is combat. Ubisoft has rebuilt sword fighting around a more action-oriented system that rewards timing and positioning instead of relying on the counter-heavy mechanics from the 2013 release.
Players can expect hitbox-based attacks, more responsive animations, timing-focused parries and greater interaction with the environment during fights. Ubisoft says the goal was to modernize combat while keeping the overall feel of Black Flag intact rather than turning it into an RPG like recent series entries.

Worth Knowing: Ubisoft says Resynced is intentionally more action-focused than Assassin’s Creed Shadows while still remaining faithful to Black Flag’s identity.
Parkour and Stealth Feel More Fluid
Movement has also received a major refresh. Ubisoft has incorporated improvements inspired by newer Assassin’s Creed games, resulting in smoother climbing, freer movement and more natural parkour transitions.

Stealth mechanics have also been refined, giving players additional options during infiltration while preserving the original level design and sandbox approach.
More Reasons to Explore the Caribbean
Exploration is becoming significantly more rewarding thanks to one of the remake’s biggest additions: the ability to dive anywhere.
Instead of limiting underwater exploration to specific diving bell missions, players can freely explore coastlines and discover newly added shipwrecks, hidden treasures and underwater secrets scattered across the map.
| Feature | Original | Resynced |
|---|---|---|
| Combat | Counter-focused | Hitbox & timing-based |
| Underwater | Limited areas | Dive anywhere |
| Parkour | 2013 movement | Modernized traversal |
| Loading | Present | Mostly seamless |
Mission Design Has Been Updated
Ubisoft has also revisited several mission types that players frequently criticized in the original game. Certain stealth, tailing and objective-based missions have been adjusted to make failure conditions less frustrating while keeping their overall structure familiar.

The remake also introduces additional side activities, islands and optional content without changing Edward Kenway’s main storyline.
A More Seamless Open World
Thanks to Ubisoft’s latest Anvil engine, Black Flag Resynced removes many loading screens between gameplay segments. Sailing, docking, exploration and city traversal now feel much more connected than they did in 2013.

Combined with upgraded visuals, weather effects, underwater systems and environmental detail, the Caribbean aims to feel larger and more immersive without losing the atmosphere that made the original one of the franchise’s most beloved entries.
Rather than reinventing Black Flag, Ubisoft appears to be modernizing nearly every gameplay system while keeping the pirate adventure that fans remember largely intact.
