On September 9th, 2024, the long-awaited game from the Warhammer 40k universe, Space Marine 2, was released.

This title is a sequel to Space Marine, which came out in 2011, with events set over 100 years after those of the first game.

This title is a blend of action, hack ‘n’ slash, and third-person shooter genres. Fans of the series have been eagerly anticipating its release for years, and early reviews look very positive.

Many players appreciate some changes made by the developers (a different studio than the one responsible for Space Marine 1) to this title. So, what new features does Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 offer? Let’s find out!

Space Marine Franchise

Let’s start with a brief introduction to the franchise. The Space Marine video games are based on the tabletop miniature wargame Warhammer 40,000, which has been developed by Games Workshop since the 1980s.

This game, or rather system, allows players to collect and paint miniature figurines, create their own maps and scenarios, and even engage in multiplayer tabletop battles.

The Warhammer universe has not only led to the creation of war games but also board games, role-playing games, card games, and several series of books and stories set in this incredible world. Naturally, video games were not left out either.

Many of these were developed by Relic Entertainment, including Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, released 13 years ago. The newly released sequel, however, was created by Saber Interactive.

Gameplay – Space Marine 2

Space Marine 2 is one of the most anticipated titles in the franchise. Players appreciate that it is very similar to its prequel and continues its storyline, focusing on the character Demetrius Titus, the former Firstborn Captain and commander of the Ultramarines 2nd Company.

This character, through an unfortunate series of events, was demoted and expelled from the Chapter, but he managed to return in glory. But… we don’t want to spoil the story!

In terms of mechanics, one of the most significant changes is worth noting. In Space Marine (2011), players only experienced a solo campaign. Space Marine 2, however, introduces a major new feature — multiplayer modes! Multiplayer gameplay allows for cooperative fun (PvE “Operations”) as well as competition against other players (PvP “Eternal War”).

Along with these modes comes the introduction of classes, well-known to fans of classic Warhammer.

In Space Marine 2, you can play not only as Titus but also select and customize a chosen Space Marine according to your gameplay preferences (both ranged combat enthusiasts and those who prefer reconnaissance or close-quarters combat will find something to enjoy here). Those modes also introduce the ability to upgrade and customize weapons. It is also possible to create your own Chapters and squads of Space Marines.

Another new feature is that, unlike Space Marine, the second installment of the game introduces three characters in the story mode. While Titus remains the main playable character, two additional Marines accompany him — Brother Chairon and Brother Gadriel.

The game is somewhat more balanced compared to the first installment, though there are moments where the difficulty spikes. Some enemies spawn in the form of “swarms,” massive hordes that cause your character to be literally flooded by the enemies.
