Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Released2014-09-30
GenreAdventure
DeveloperMonolith Productions

Set in the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor tells the story of Talion, the last Ranger of the Black Gate, whose life is bound to Celebrimbor, a wraith of an ancient Elven king.

Together, the Ranger and the Wraith embark on a quest to conquer Mordor, challenging the Dark Lord Sauron and his chieftains, the Black Numenorean Captains.

Shadow of Mordor features a lot of mechanics that the fans of Assassin’s Creed will like. The open world of Mordor is divided into two distinct regions – the desolate Udun and the lush seaside of Nurn. The areas in each region are unlocked by interacting with Forge Towers, similar to Assassin’s Creed synchronization points. The free-flow combat mechanics are more similar to the Batman: Arkham series, but those who had played any of the AC games will find themselves right at home in the system of parries and counterattacks.

Key features
  • Explore the regions of Mordor and conquer them in the name of Bright Lord
  • Encounter Orc Captains and defeat them to sow fear in the hearts of your enemies
  • Make allies on both sides of the war
  • Face powerful Black Numenoreans and avenge your family

On the night of Halloween, Scarecrow sends a terrifying message to the citizen of Gotham City. His new fear toxin will be unleashed upon the city unless Batman surrenders.

With most of the citizens evacuated, the city is overtaken by criminals, led by a mysterious Arkham Knight. Supported by Jim Gordon, the remnants of GCPD and other allies – The Oracle, Nightwing, and Alfred – Batman embarks on the mission that will test not only his body but his mind as well.

Batman: Arkham Knight is the final installment in the Arkham series, developed by Rocksteady, and quite possibly the best Batman game ever. The fans of Assassin’s Creed will definitely appreciate the expansive stealth options – the Dark Knight has at his disposal a variety of tools to distract and take down enemies. Exploration of the open-world environment of Gotham City is another selling point of the game. In this installment, Batman can not only glide across the night sky but drive the Batmobile, his signature vehicle.

Key features
  • Accept the Scarecrow’s challenge and take him down once and for all
  • Explore the criminal-infested streets of Gotham using the Batmobile
  • Defeat your opponents stealthily or engage them in brutal hand-to-hand combat
  • Face the Dark Knight’s Rogue’s Gallery, including Two-Face, the Penguin, and the Joker

Dishonored

DeveloperArkane Studios

Corvo Attano, a member of the royal guard, is accused of the murder of his empress and sentenced to death.

However, before the sentence can be carried out, Corvo is broken out by the rebels, who believe that he was framed by the Empress’ Spymaster, who now has taken her place. Together with the Empress’ Loyalists, Corvo embarks on the quest to clear his name and thwart the Spymaster’s plans.

Various installments of Assassin’s Creed offer the player a choice of how they will carry out a given mission. Arkane Studios’s Dishonored takes this feature to the next level. The player can use Corvo’s stealth, combat, and magical skills to fight his way to the objective or sneak around to complete it without killing anybody. It’s an interesting solution for those who like to try different approaches and explore opportunities offered by the game’s mechanics.

Key features
  • Clear your name and avenge the death of the Empress
  • Use stealth, combat, and magical skills to complete various objectives
  • Fight your enemies or find ways to avoid them in a unique “conflict-optional” gameplay

Mad Max

DeveloperAvalanche Studios

His name is Max. His world is fire and blood. And the player’s job will be to help him get back at the warlord who stole his car and left him to die in the wasteland.

With the help of a hunchback mechanic Chumbucket, Max will build a new cart and show the Warboys roaming the region why he is called the Road Warrior.

2015’s Mad Max combines the features of several genres. Players will find here elements of action-adventure, RPG, and vehicular combat.

Those looking for Assassin’s Creed-like gameplay will find it in exploring the wasteland, discovering new regions and points of interest via observation balloons (synchronization points, hello!), and a multitude of collectibles scattered about the post-apocalyptic environment.

Key features
  • Ride into the wasteland to settle the score with Lord Scrotus and his Warboys
  • Team up with Chum and build the best car the wasteland has ever seen
  • Carry out missions for the minor lords of the region in order to secure their support in your quest
  • Collect scrap to upgrade your ride and various other collectibles

Watch Dogs: Legion

GenreAction-adventure
DeveloperUbisoft Toronto

London has fallen! Albion, a private security company, has taken over control of the city and turned it into an Orwellian nightmare.

Only Dedsec, a group of free-thinking rebels/anarchists, dare to take a stand against the oppressors. But with their numbers reduced to almost nothing, they need to build from the ground up to gain the favor of Londoners and overthrow Albion’s rule.

Watch Dogs: Legion shares the setting with Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate – the more observant fans of AC’s Victorian London escapade will notice similarities in locations and certain characters (the Kelley Gang look oddly similar to Templar-controlled Blighters).

The gameplay features are also similar, with the player exploring London, unlocking new regions on the map, collecting various trinkets, and finally carrying story missions and sidequests. All that as one of several hundred unique citizens of London, which player can convince to join the Dedsec cause.

Key features
  • Give London back to the people
  • Recruit citizens of the capital to join your cause
  • Carry out missions to destabilize Albion’s control of the city
  • Build a posse and take on the challenges of the multiplayer mode

When the Mongolian hordes threaten Japan with invasion, brave samurai stand up in arms to defend their homeland.

Lead by Jin Sakai, they fight the invader but are quickly overrun. Seeing no other choice, the lord of the region surrenders, allowing the Mongols to take over. Sakai avoids capture and begins his own quest to unite scattered samurai and win back the land from the invaders.

Fans of the Assassin’s Creed series have long been waiting for a game set in feudal Japan. While Ubisoft is still secretive about whether the next installment of the AC series will take us there, Ghost of Tsushima should help the player bind the time. The game has everything the fans of Assassin’s Creed could ever want – open-world setting, gameplay that combines stealth and action, and collectibles to find here and there. Add to that the long-awaited setting of samurai-era Japan, and you have a game that will definitely satisfy the Assassin enthusiasts.

Key features
  • Fight for your homeland against the invader horde
  • Engage your enemies openly or use stealth to surprise them
  • Explore the beautiful environments of coastal Japan
  • Find hidden treasures and equipment to make your samurai an enemy to be reckoned with

inFamous: Second Son picks up not long after the protagonist of the series, Cole McGrath, sacrificed himself to save the world and rid people of their Conduit powers.

Now, the remaining Conduits are hunted by the government and dubbed as bioterrorists. Delsin Rowe, a young graffiti artist with the power to mimic other conduit skills, arrives in Seattle to search for Brook Augustine, an anti-Conduit task force leader and the only person with the power to save Delsin’s people.

inFamous: Second Son takes the player to an open-world Seattle, which they can freely explore in between missions. The city has been faithfully reconstructed in the game, with the digital versions of its landmarks such as the Space Needle. The gameplay focuses on exploration and combat, both of which make use of Delsin’s powers. In addition, the game features the Karma system, by which choices made by the player throughout the gameplay affect the ending.

Key features
  • Explore every nook and cranny of the futuristic Seattle
  • Fight against the government agents and help other Conduits
  • Use your powers to subdue or kill your enemies
  • The Karma system of positive and negative choices affecting the ending of the game

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones

Released2005-12-07
GenreFighting
DeveloperUbisoft Montreal

After the events on the Island of Time, the Prince and Empress Kaileena return to Babylon only to see it in ruins.

The Prince’s choice to fight his fate caused a ripple effect that leads the city to be taken by the Vizier, who kills Kaileena and steals the Dagger of Time. The Prince must now fight through Viziers minions, possessed by the Sands of Time, and free his homeland from Vizier’s tyranny.

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones introduces several interesting mechanics. The first of them is the character of Dark Prince, the protagonist’s cruel and vicious alter-ego, who takes over the Prince’s body at several stages of the game. The other mechanic is the stealth-focused speed kill system, which allows the Prince to kill enemies quickly and quietly. Pressing the attack button as the Prince’s blade begins to glow initiates a QTE, during which the protagonist stabs the unsuspecting enemy to death. Those familiar with the lethal effects of the Assassins’ Hidden Blade will definitely appreciate this mechanic.

Key features
  • Free Babylon from the Vizier’s tyrannical rule
  • Face your own dark nature as the Dark Prince begins to take over your mind and body
  • Use the speed kill system to deal with enemies stealthy

Mirror's Edge Catalyst

Released2016-06-09
GenreAdventure
DeveloperDICE

A powerful Conglomerate rules the City of Glass. Every person in the city has a corporate role assigned to them.

Those who oppose the system are forced to live on the roofs of the high-rise buildings, making their living as runners – couriers dealing with illegal goods. One of such runners is Faith Connors, the female protagonist of the game. Making an uneasy return to the business after spending time behind bars, Faith is thrown into a conspiracy tied to the history of the city and her own family.

The original Mirror’s Edge, released in 2008, was an interesting combination of an FPS and platformer.

The 2016 reboot drops the former genre, focusing solely on acrobatic exploration. The player will run, jump, roll and dash across the roofs and vents, carrying out dangerous missions and avoiding capture by the security forces. If you are fond of the parkour elements of the Assassin’s Creed games, then you will definitely enjoy a game that emphasizes that gameplay aspect.

Key features
  • Explore the high-rise environments of the City of Glass
  • Carry out missions and sidequests as fast as you can
  • Avoid or disarm the security forces sent after you
  • Try your best in the time challenges and compare your results with other players

Agent 47 returns! A mysterious Shadow Client has put contracts on the members of a secretive organization called Providence.

47 is tasked by his handler, Diana, to assassinate them using his combat and tactics expertise. As 47 continues to cross targets of the list, more and more is revealed bout the Shadow Client’s motivations and final goal.

A classic game in the stealth genre, featuring the OG assassin. This episodic title sends 47 to the most exotic locations in the world to take down elusive targets. The player is given a free choice of how they’ll dispose of their targets – the game rewards creativity, so dropping an ornate chandelier on the target’s head or sending them falling off the balcony is always a better choice of action than simply shooting them in the head. The players who enjoyed the different assassination approaches in AC: Syndicate should definitely enjoy this mechanic.

Key features
  • Don the black suit of Agent 47 and return to the wolrd of international assassinations.
  • Locate and eliminate elusive targets using any means necessary
  • Sneak into your target’s surroundings using a variety of disguises
  • Use the environment to your advantage in planning a spectacular assassination

Take a leap of faith

Our list of games similar to Assassin’s Creed is by no means complete. Thanks to Ubisoft’s change in direction when it comes to the series, the player can now enjoy a completely different gameplay experience. Shifting focus on the action-RPG elements adds a new edge to the current AC games, like Odyssey or Valhalla. However, if you want to feel the general thrill of sneaking past the guards and stealthy assassinating your target, the games from our list will do that for you.
