Scarlet Nexus

Release date:2021-06-25
Genre:RPG
Developer:Bandai Namco Studios

From certain point of view, Scarlet Nexus might be the closest you can get to a Code Vein-like experience.

It matches CV’s deeply, unapologetically anime-like aesthetic, has a gripping, exciting combat, and fun powers to deploy. It also has cool monsters, eager to snack on human brains, despite not being zombies. Scarlet Nexus features two protagonists, whose stories are interwoven.

They are Yuito Sumeragi and Kasane Randall, both skilled in both combat (Yuito opting for swords, while Kasane prefers throwing knives) and telekinetic abilities. They are operatives of an organization protecting Earth from the brain-munching Others. Scarlet Nexus handles its mix of telekinesis and armed combat with finesse, letting you easily put both in your combos for extra oomph.

Key features
  • Two playable characters with different playstyles
  • Distinctly anime-like aesthetic
  • Excellent action mixing sword/knife combat with telekinetic powers
  • Parallel stories

Final Fantasy 7 Remake/Rebirth

Release date:2021-04-10
Genre:RPG
Developer:Square Enix Creative Business Unit I

Final Fantasy 7 is one of the most beloved games in the series, and after many, many years of fans craving a remake, their pleas were heard and rewarded.

The new version of FF7 might not look super anime… until action begins, and the impressively realistic (yet stylized) characters unleash their flurries of energy-trailing kicks, bombastic blasts, and exaggerated sword fighting. It’s delicious.

Each entry of the remake (Remake Intergrade, Rebirth and the third part coming in unspecified future) greatly expands on the world and story, fleshing out the characters, adding depth and interactivity, and revamping combat from pure ATB to something more dynamic. It also makes a few interesting tweaks to the original story, so even if you know the originals, it’s worth checking out!

Key features
  • Several expansive, excellent games based on the all-time 1997 Final Fantasy classic
  • Spectacular combat merging Active-Time Battle system with action-like gameplay
  • Phenomenal graphics
  • Engaging main and side stories

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Release date:2014-01-09
Genre:Action & Shooter
Developer:PlatinumGames

PlatinumGames’ Metal Gear spin-off is one of the most over-the-top games in the hack-and-slash genre, so if that’s what you’re looking for after the animesque escapades of Code Vein, then you’re in the right place.

Even just the tutorial mission has you parry a gigantic mecha sword with a normal, human-scale katana, and things go even wilder from there.

While Revengeance features ranged weapons and alternative melee options, the star of the game is the sword, your playable character, Raiden, wields with absurd proficiency. There’s even a special “Blade mode” ditching general targeting in favor of free-form slashing through environment and enemies alike, hoping to strike at their weak points for extra damage and destruction.

Key features
  • Story full of larger-than-life weirdos
  • Fantastic, skill-based, sword-first combat system
  • Doesn’t have spooky monsters, but has plenty of robots and cyborgs
  • Great soundtrack

Dark Souls and Elden Ring

Release date:2022-02-25
Genre:Action RPG
Developer:FromSoftware

Straying from the over-the-top action and anime aesthetics, perhaps what you loved about Code Vein was the specific combat system and world construction?

In this case, you’re in luck, because it was heavily inspired by the Dark Souls series, developed by FromSoftware. Dark Souls’ games are famous for their challenging combat, intricate map design, and memorable, dark fantasy Gothic aesthetic.

Elden Ring is very similar, except it has a fully open world you’re able to traverse at your leisure, as long as you can survive the lethal threats. In both DS and ER you can expect many of meticulously designed bosses, tons of lesser, but still deadly foes, and story that’s more implied, than directly presented, leaving a lot of room for interpretation. It’s the measuring stick for the entire genre.

Key features
  • Gloomy, dark fantasy settings
  • Tense, challenging, stamina-based combat system
  • Complex storytelling
  • Other Soulsborne titles are also worth checking out

Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor

Release date:2019-11-15
Genre:Adventure
Developer:Respawn Entertainment

If you’d rather have something a bit less gloomy and a bit more space-worthy, consider the Cal Kestis saga of Jedi Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor.

Both games are mixing Soulslike gameplay with bit of the Metroidvania genre, to create a tasty blend of satisfying exploration, intricate map design, as well as combat which promotes studying enemy movesets and being patient and precise.

The stories follow Cal Kestis, a survivor of Order 66 who got tangled up in a fight against the Empire, both as a Jedi and a resistance member. Each game features several planets, with maps opening up as you acquire new abilities, such as wall-running if Fallen Order or grappling hook in the sequel. With its Force-powered combat, great story, and fun cast of characters, they are well worth checking out.

Key features
  • Customizable lightsaber
  • Great combat system with emphasis on parrying and dodging
  • Great stories in both entries
  • Jedi Survivor features larger maps, improved lightsaber combat, and expanded movement

God Eater 3

Release date:2019-02-08
Genre:Action
Developer:Marvelous First Studio

Back in the realm of anime-like aesthetics, God Eater 3 puts you in the boot of a titular warrior fighting against powerful monsters invading Earth: the Aragami.

Equipped with God Arcs, weapons made of the same stuff these creatures are, you have a shot at pushing them back and defending humanity. In God Eater 3 the war still rages on, but there’s a new type of God Eaters around…

God Eater 3 shares a apocalypse-adjacent vibe of Code Vein, intense combat against massive enemies, cool weapons, and it looks very anime. It’s also more Monster Hunter (stay tuned) adjacent than Scarlet Nexus, so you’re in for more deliberate, RPG-crunchy experience than Scarlet Nexus earlier on the list offers, but no less over-the-top and exciting. Especially in multiplayer for up to 8 people!

Key features
  • Customizable protagonist
  • Transforming weapons
  • Over-the-top combat
  • A lot of mechanical customization

Monster Hunter World/Rise

Release date:2018-08-09
Genre:Action
Developer:CAPCOM

For the final entry, we’re straying a bit from anime aesthetic, spooky post-apocalypses and dark fantasy.

Instead we venture forth to the mostly optimistic Monster Hunter. Both MH World and MH Rise are solid picks, with their dedication to engaging boss fights against cool (but natural-looking) monsters, exaggerated weapons, and demanding, complex combat system. They do differ a bit too, however!

MH World is much more detailed, a bit slower-paced, and technologically impressive, and a great way to prepare for the upcoming MH Wilds. MH Rise, on the other hand, has a more vibrant looks, with strong monster and equipment designs, as well as much faster and more mobile combat. Both are excellent at what they do, so check some trailers and pick one that appeals to you more!

Key features
  • 14 weapon classes with unique movesets and playstyles
  • Tons of weapons and armor to craft once you get the resources
  • Many powerful monsters to hunt
  • Preparation is important: pick the right gear and tool to ensure success
