Oxenfree II: Lost Signals

Release date:2023-07-12
Genre:Indie
Developer:Night School Studio

Oxenfree II: Lost Signals is a sequel that builds upon the success of the original game.

While it retains familiar elements, it manages to carve its own path. You return to your hometown, as a new heroine, to solve the mystery of enigmatic radio signals. Just like the premieres of Oxenefree and Oxenfree 2: Lost Signal, the events presented in both games are separated by 5 years.

The game continues the watercolor-inspired art style and impactful audio design from the first Oxenfree. Although it might not be as scary, it still delivers an emotional and surprising experience.

Instead of teenagers, Lost Signals features new protagonists Riley and Jacob, who are in their 30s. Their experiences as adults add depth to the story, and their interactions with stranded ghosts remain intriguing. The gameplay mechanics carry over, and the setting is a neighboring town to the original.

However, subtle changes and a refined narrative keep it engaging. The heartfelt writing and relatable protagonists contribute to the game’s appeal. Choices you make impact relationships and the ending, adding replay value.

Just like the previous installment, Oxenfree 2: Lost Signal is a two-dimensional adventure game in which you explore locations and talk to NPCs, quickly choosing from many dialogue options – otherwise the dialogue will continue without you. You also constantly solve puzzles by interacting with objects on the screen and using the portable radio known from the first part, on which you have to set the appropriate frequency.

Key features
  • Supernatural communication
  • Shaping of the story through dialogue choices
  • Atmospheric setting
  • Puzzles and exploration

Night in the Woods

Release date:2017-02-21
Genre:Action & Shooter
Developer:Infinite Fall

Night in the Woods: Weird Autumn Edition is a nostalgic narrative adventure game with platform elements, with a special emphasis on the plot, exploration, and characters.

The costs of the production were largely covered by a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, which took just 26 hours.

The game is set in a small mining town called Possum Springs, which has fallen into decline after the last mine that employed a large part of its residents closed. You play as a rebellious cat named Mae, who has no respect for authority and dropped out of college to return to her hometown and reconnect with a group of friends.

The protagonist quickly realizes that time has not stood still during her absence – both the town and her former companions have changed a lot and nothing is the same as it used to be. On top of that, a few months ago, her school friend went missing, and something is lurking in the woods that undoubtedly has hostile intentions.

The gameplay itself uses adventure exploration mechanics with typical platform elements – we walk, jump and talk to NPCs. During dialogues, you can often choose one of several answer options, and the decisions made in this way affect not only how your friends react, but also how you spend the evening of a given day. This opens up access to unique sequences.

Seemingly trivial activities serve as a background for the plot and asking a whole host of important existential questions that many of us have probably asked ourselves.

Key features
  • Multiple playthroughs
  • Character-driven narrative
  • Vibrant world
  • Casual hanging out

To The Moon

Release date:2011-11-01
Genre:Adventure
Developer:Freebird Games

To the Moon is an independent adventure game that combines a rich narrative layer with the style of classic RPGs from the SNES console.

The title was created by the independent Freebird Games studio, consisting of just a dozen people, founded by Kan “Reives” Gao. During the gameplay, you control the actions of two scientists: Eve Rosalene and Neil Watts, working for Sigmund Corp. This corporation offers dying people the opportunity to travel into their memories and redirect events in such a way as to fulfil their greatest, unfulfilled dreams.

In To the Moon, you end up in a remote house, where a sick old man, Johnny Wyles, who always wanted to get to the Moon, is living his last moments. Elements of the real world and the memories of the dying Wyles are constantly intertwined.

The scientists controlled by you go back to Johnny’s increasingly older memories, trying to find a point where his life can be changed. At the same time, you discover more and more moving details from his past.

Despite the style borrowed from early RPGs, the game is a classic adventure game. The player’s goal is to thoroughly explore the locations visited (including the lighthouse and Wyles’ house) and collect special orbs symbolizing key memories. To do this, you must talk to the people you meet and collect various items that allow you to travel to the earlier years of Johnny’s life. From time to time, some not too complicated mini-games await you.

Key features
  • Story-driven experience
  • Adventure game elements meet RPG aesthetics
  • Extreme efficiency
  • Acclaimed original soundtrack

Night Book

Release date:2021-07-27
Genre:Indie
Developer:Good Gate Media

An adventure game in the convention of an occult thriller, realized using FMV technique.

The main character of Night Book is Loralyn, who inadvertently summons a demon to her home. How her fate will unfold depends on the decisions we make. The production is the result of cooperation between the Good Gate Media studio and Wales Interactive.

The main character of Night Book is Loralyn. In the absence of her husband, who is far from home, the pregnant woman takes care of her father, who is affected by mental illness, and also works remotely as a translator. One night, unaware of the consequences of her actions, the protagonist reads an ancient book, thus summoning a demon to her home.

From that moment on, her life turns into a real nightmare, and how her fate will unfold depends on the decisions you make.

In terms of mechanics, Night Book does not differ much from what we are used to in other productions made using FMV technology. During the game, you follow the conversations held by the heroine using a webcam, gradually getting to know both Loralyn herself and the relationships connecting her with individual people. As befits a thriller, as you progress, you witness increasingly terrifying events involving the protagonist.

From time to time, you have to make choices that affect the further course of the story and determine the fate of the heroine, which lead to one of several endings.

Key features
  • Branching narratives
  • Multiple paths
  • Variety of endings (15 variations)
  • Skip scene function

So, if you enjoy a gameplay involving making choices, as well as thriller, a little bit of mystery, and uncertainty, make sure to check out the titles presented – the narrative-driven experiences keeping you on your toes and making you think both with your brain and your heart.
