Ah, time-travel. What would we give to go back to the past and/or future, to undo mistakes or see how our life will look like in 20 years.

So far, such luck was only available to the characters of novels, movies, and video games. We witnessed 19th-century scientists explore the mysteries of the future in H.G. Wells’ Time Machine. We saw Marty McFly help his bumbling father declare his love for Marty’s mom in Back to the Future.

Now it’s time to take a look at how video games dealt with the theme of temporal manipulation. Take a look at our list of games that involve time travel in some shape or form. Please notice, that we excluded games where characters can manipulate time and space such as Quantum Break, Max Payne or Control.

The temporal adventure of Crono, Marie, and Lucca is one of the oldest games on our list to deal with the theme of time travel with such complexity.

The story of Chrono Trigger pits the characters against insurmountable odds as they travel through time to stop the imminent apocalypse.

Chrono Trigger

As they gather more clues and make new friends across time, they begin to witness the effect of their actions on the world. This is one of the key features of the game; the player’s actions in the past affect the present and future. Nowadays, it seems trivial, but 15 years ago, such mechanics were unheard of. That is why Chrono Trigger is justly called one of the best video games of all time.

Key features
  • Explore past, present, and future to prevent the apocalypse
  • Make new friends across the time
  • Witness your actions influence the timeline

Crash Bandicoot put Naughty Dog in the big leagues of cartoony platform game developers.

Aided by a tribal mask Aku Aku, Crash travels to different times to gather the crystals before the mad scientist. Gameplay-wise, Crash remains true to the series roots of running, jumping from platform to platform, smashing crates, gathering apples, etc. The time travel shenanigans allow the developers to place the action in new interesting areas, inspired by medieval, oriental, or Arab times.

Despite its title, Croteam’ Serious Sam: The First Encounter is just as serious as the 50s movies about aliens.

The plot is paper-thin and serves only to justify a brutal massacre of alien monsters using various weapons, from shotguns to laser-cannons and rocket launchers to oversized howitzers, firing explosive cannonballs.

Serious Sam: The First Encounter

The game’s time travel theme focuses on the main character, Sam “Serious” Stone traveling to ancient times to stop an alien warlord from conquering the earth in the future. If you’re into mindless fun of shooting at everything that moves, Serious Sam: TFE is a game just for you.

Key features

Onimusha 3: Demon Siege

Reno portrays French military man Jacques Blanc. Samanosuke is the other playable character, but who cares when you can play as whip-swinging Jean Reno, right?

Ah, Kingdom Hearts. Where would we be without you and the Square Enix/Disney corporate synergy you represent.

Probably in a place with fewer memes, as the game in the series provided us with plenty of opportunities to laugh at characters like Donald, Goofy, and Mickey acting like super serious jRPG protagonists.

Kingdom Hearts III

The third installment of the game takes Sora back to the world of Kingdom Hearts, where he once again will face Ansem and Organization XIII…I guess? It’s really complicated, and if you can figure out the plot and who is who’s of this series, then wow. Anyway, there’s a time travel subplot, so KH III fits the bill of our list. Fans of convoluted action-jRPGs will feel right at home with this one.

Key features
  • Return to the world of Kingdom Hearts and face the Heartless once again
  • Reunite with your favorite Disney characters: Mickey, Goofy, and Donald
  • Experience your favorite moments from Disney classics, recreated in the game

One of the most charming games to ever grace the consoles, featuring graphics inspired by Japanese watercolor painting and excellent action gameplay mechanics.

Okami tells the story of Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess, who returns to Earth after a hundreds-year-long absence. Alongside Issun, a wandering poet and warrior the size of a pea, she must face the threat of Orochi, a demon accidentally released from his slumber by Susano, a cowardly warrior trying to prove his greatness.

Okami

The game draws deep from the Japanese folklore, with each character representing one of its deities. The legendary struggle between heroic Nagi and Orochi, the key event in the country’s lore, lays the foundation of the game’s story. Through the gameplay, the player will be able to witness the battle firsthand and take on the demon themselves, as the second encounter involving Nagi’s descendant, Susano and player-controlled Amaterasu culminates one of the game’s story arcs.

The first installment of the Sands of Time trilogy brought in the mechanics that the series would be associated with for years.

Aside from the usual PoP exploration and platforming, the player could use the titular Sands to manipulate time: slow it down, turn it back, etc.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

These powers would certainly come in handy, as the Prince’s quest to reclaim his kingdom would be fraught with dangers. One wrong step could lead to certain doom at the bottom of a spiky pit, but thanks to the Sands’ powers, the player could undo their death and return to safety.

Key features
  • Fight for the future of the Persian empire

DeveloperSanta Monica Studio
Game modessingle-player

God of War series was unlike anything the players had ever seen. Brutal, sensual, epic – these are only a few words that come to mind when thinking about Santa Monica Studio’s creation.

Especially the second installment of the series, which saw Kratos ascended and soon dethroned from his seat at the Olympus, would wow the players with its visuals and mechanics.

God of War 2

How does it fit into our list, you ask? Well, Kratos’ quest for vengeance against the gods takes him to the abode of the Sisters of Fate, which provides the player with a look into the protagonist’s past deeds. The game even lets the player witness the climactic showdown with the previous God of War –  in one of the boss battles, Kratos’ task is to prevent his own death at the hands of the treacherous Ares. If you’ve played the game back in the late 2000s, you probably know the outcome of his confrontation with the Sisters. If you don’t, I suggest picking up the series from the beginning – you definitely won’t be disappointed.

Key features
  • The gods have betrayed you – now they must pay
  • Travel to the Island of Creation and face the Sisters of Fate
  • Use your Blades of Chaos and other weapons to cut your way to destiny
