Why Play The Sims 4 Challenges?
The Sims 4 is a game that now boasts an extensive collection of over 70 add-ons — ranging from story-driven expansions to packs that introduce new items, interactions, and even… seasons. This creates virtually limitless possibilities for gameplay and countless scenarios to explore.
However, sometimes inspiration for new gameplay can run dry. That’s when you can turn to ready-made scenarios — or spice things up by setting your own challenges to make the game more exciting! Today, we’ve prepared 15 unique gameplay ideas that will let you experience The Sims in an entirely new way.
Some of these challenges might be a little shocking, others require patience, and some demand meticulous planning — but they all have one thing in common: they’ll help you see the game from a fresh perspective and take advantage of features you might have never used before!
So, which scenario will you choose for your next play through?
1. ISBI Challenge
Unlike previous instalments, The Sims 4 gives our Sims quite a bit of autonomy. When we do not take control over them, they find their own activities and fulfil their needs when they start to suffer (i.e. they use the toilet when their bladder is full, fix themselves something to eat when they’re hungry, or play with their phones when they feel bored). However, despite this, the ISBI Challenge is one of the hardest in the game!
It involves playing a rather long game spanning 10 generations while controlling only one Sim per generation within the family. Can you ensure the survival of future generations? Will your Sims have enough money to live? Will they find true happiness? Dive in and see for yourself!
2. Rags to Riches Challenge
This is one of those scenarios that require patience and ingenuity. To start this challenge, you must begin the game in the “Making Money” scenario or create two Sims and move one of them out of the lot, taking all the available Simoleons — this will make you start the game with a grand total of $0 in the Family’s account!
From now on, your Sim must start building their wealth from scratch, but the challenge is that… you don’t even have money for a basic house or food. You’ll need to take on small jobs, sell found treasures, and gradually build your life and career until you achieve wealth and success!
3. Always Happy Challenge
The Sims 4 differs from its predecessors not only in granting characters more autonomy, but also in introducing a brand-new mechanic which determines Sim’s mood based on their emotions and mental state changes.
However, just like in real life, emotions can shift instantly — your Sim might run into an enemy, get scared by something, or eat an unpleasant fruitcake brought over by the neighbours. The whole challenge here is to prevent your Sim from experiencing any emotions other than positive ones. Will you manage to keep them always happy?
4. Vampire Dynasty Challenge
This is another challenge requiring patience and playing through many Sim years, but this time, your goal is to create a dynasty of high-ranking vampires!
To make this even harder, start with a single vampire Sim who cannot have children. Creating a dynasty will therefore require gaining trust and then turning other Sims into vampires, and later mentoring them. However, once you’ve turned everyone in town, you’ll need to find an alternative food source…
Important: You will need the appropriate DLC to play this challenge.
5. Homeless Sim Challenge
This challenge is similar to Rags to Riches and starts the same way. The difference, however, is that instead of trying to build wealth and create a cosy home, your goal is simply to survive!
Your character will have to nap in public spaces or at friends’ houses, scavenge for food (e.g., when someone grills hot dogs in the park), or collect it (by fishing, picking fruits etc), use public restrooms, and find odd jobs or treasures to sell to earn some cash and meet their daily needs.
6. Big Brother Challenge
Inspired by the once-popular reality show, this challenge might not be easy, but is definitely a lot of fun!
Create a large house and a group of unrelated Sims who will live together as roommates. The more diverse their personalities, the better. Surround the property with a high fence with no gate, and lock the doors for neighbours so that no one can interact with outside NPCs. The goal is to observe the relationships that form between the characters — those who struggle the most socially, are the least liked, or are the most problematic get “evicted” from the program!
Although this challenge can be played in the base game, using money cheat codes is recommended — since your Sims won’t be able to leave the house, they won’t be able to work and earn money.
7. Bachelor/Bachelorette Challenge
Another challenge inspired by a popular reality TV show, in which one Sim builds romantic relationships with multiple others (for best results, give your Sim romantic traits and aspirations when creating them).
To make the challenge more engaging, create a setting similar to the Big Brother Challenge — place all the contestants in one house. The fun part is watching the romance, drama, and relationships unfold. The Sims with the lowest romance points must leave the house.
8. 100 Babies Challenge
A fascinating challenge that can be pursued alongside regular gameplay or treated as a fun side quest.
For obvious reasons, this challenge requires a male Sim (or a female Sim with the ability to impregnate others). The goal? To have a total of 100 children with as many different partners as possible before your Sim’s life comes to an end!
9. Off The Grid Challenge
This challenge significantly alters the gameplay, making it more difficult but also more immersive and rewarding.
Your task is to create a “hermit” Sim who prefers to live off the grid, away from civilization. Set the lot traits to “Off the Grid” and equip your Sim with traits that help them survive without modern technology and social interactions (i.e. Loner, Loves Outdoors, Creative). Build a house without electricity or running water — your Sim must collect water, cook on an open flame, and manage resources like ice in the fridge. Their income must come from crafting, collecting, or farming.
Although this challenge is possible in the base game, DLCs such as Laundry Day, Jungle Adventure, Eco Lifestyle, and Island Living offer useful items that enhance the experience.
10. Decades Challenge
This challenge also involves guiding your Sims family through multiple generations, but with an interesting twist!
Your starting family must match the aesthetics, aspirations, and preferences of past eras. For example, you can begin in the 1800s by creating a Victorian home without electricity or running water. Each subsequent generation jumps forward by a few decades until you eventually refurnish your lot into a futuristic, high-tech home where robots, rocket ships, and modern technology are essential to daily life.
11. Cowplant Challenge
Growing a Cowplant is one of the hardest tasks in the entire Sims series. It requires gardening skills, knowledge, and a lot of patience. And even once you’ve successfully grown one, the challenge isn’t over. Taking care of this monstrous plant is demanding, and it’s all too easy to end up inside its cow-planty stomach — or let it wither, wasting all the effort you put into growing it!
But growing just one Cowplant? That’s for amateurs! The real challenge is to cultivate an entire farm of these bizarre plants and turn it into your main source of income!
12. Debbie Jellinsky Challenge
This challenge is also known as the Black Widow Challenge, but in recent years, “Black Widow” has become associated with the MCU female fighter who was actually a good lass. This challenge, however, requires you to create a true psycho bish!
The premise is simple: create a female Sim whose life goal is to seduce wealthy men — preferably ones who own large, luxurious estates. The goal? To marry them quickly and, well… become a rich widow just as fast, ready to move on to the next wealthy shoulder to cry on.
Although this challenge can be played in the base game, DLCs add more depth by introducing new towns and characters. Fun fact: the richest Sim in the entire game is none other than Father Winter from the Seasons DLC!
13. Alien Baby Challenge
This challenge requires the following expansions: Get to Work (to create alien Sims), Parenthood (for new traits and interactions between adults and children), and City Living (to access specific lot traits).
Create one young adult human Sim in CAS along with their child — an alien toddler. The toddler’s traits must be randomized. Assign the following lot traits to their home: Fast Internet, Science Lair, and Mean Vibe.
The challenge? You cannot actively control the baby Sim until they reach young adulthood. All interactions must be done through the parent.
Why is this fun? Well, alien babies can have unique needs, and their randomized traits might not align well with those of their Sim parent. Raising a child in The Sims isn’t easy — especially when you can’t directly control them! The goal is to see if you can raise your alien child to be a proper alien citizen and manage to visit Sixam before they grow up.
14. Over-Achiever Challenge
The Over-Achiever is both a fun challenge and an actual achievement in The Sims 4, tied to the High School Years expansion — but it can also be attempted in the base game.
What’s it about? The goal is to create a Sim and push them to master as many skills, careers, and aspirations as possible. On top of that, you can challenge yourself to collect every available collectible item — crystals, elements, postcards, sugar skulls, fish etc. (there are plenty of collections in The Sims 4).
By maxing out every possible skill and achieving everything the game has to offer, you’ll create the ultimate Renaissance Sim — someone who has seen and done it all!
15. Runaway Teen Challenge
One of the patches to the base game introduced the ability for teenage Sims to live alone without the presence of young adults or adults (previously, underage Sims had to live under adult supervision). This makes it possible to attempt the final challenge on our list — the Runaway Teen challenge.
Taking on the role of a lone teenage Sim (or a small group of teens living together), you face a significant challenge. Teens can’t hold jobs or pursue careers — aside from odd jobs and freelance gigs — and some of their skill development is restricted. This means you’ll have to rely on alternative ways to earn money, like treasure hunting or gardening, just to keep your lot running and cover basic needs.
Can you survive without the financial support of working family members? Give it a try and find out!
Conclusion
The Sims 4 offers endless possibilities for creativity and challenge. Whether you’re looking for a lighthearted scenario, a survival test, or a drama-filled social experiment, these challenges will keep your gameplay fresh and exciting. Try out one — or all — of them and see where your Sims’ journey takes you!
