Where It Started: Hidden Text and Actual Eggs
The whole secret-hunting tradition really kicks off with Grand Theft Auto 3. Tucked near a parking lot in Bedford Point, reachable only if you climb a wall using the right mid-sized vehicle, there’s a message spray-painted on a hidden alley wall: “You weren’t supposed to be able to get here.” That one line got players obsessively combing every map the series has put out since.
Vice City took the whole “Easter egg” thing literally. Jump through a fake window texture on the roof of the Vice City News building and you’ll land in a hidden room. Sitting on a pedestal inside is a fully modeled chocolate egg, brown and shiny, just sitting there for no reason other than the joke.
Then there’s the moon gag, which shows up across the entire 3D trilogy, GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas. Snipe the moon and it cycles through three different sizes. Movie Nods and Darker Finds
The series has always borrowed from crime cinema, sometimes not so subtly. Vice City hides Apartment 3C, an unmarked spot with a blood-soaked bathroom and a chainsaw waiting inside, a direct recreation of that infamous Scarface scene. Visit a specific cliff between 7 and 8 PM and you’ll catch a staged recreation of the final scene from Thelma & Louise, cop cars and all, complete with an old muscle car launching off the edge.
Some secrets go somewhere darker and entirely original. GTA 5 buries a whole trail connected to the “Infinity Killer,” a murderer fixated on the number eight. Burned-out houses, cryptic poems scattered around Senora National Park, and a map scrawled on a cell wall in Bolingbroke Penitentiary all point the same direction. Follow it far enough and you end up at Paleto Point, where plastic-wrapped bodies float in the water.

Rockstar has never been shy about ribbing other developers, or its own players. Head to San Fierro in San Andreas and you’ll find an “Opposition Memorial,” tombstones reading “RIP the opposition 1997-2004.” Not subtle, but effective.
The Driver series got singled out too. GTA 3 has a mission where you take down a stiffly animated undercover cop named Tanner, a direct dig at Driver’s protagonist. Years later in San Andreas, a guard inside Mad Dogg’s mansion can be overheard complaining about a badly made game from a studio jokingly called “Refractions,” muttering “Tanner, you suck ass” under his breath.
Players got trolled just as hard. When the jetpack showed up in San Andreas, everyone assumed there’d be something big waiting at the top of the Gant Bridge. Climb all the way up, and all you get is a sign reading: “There are no Easter eggs up here, go away.”

One of the more disturbing things you’ll find in any GTA game is inside GTA 4’s Statue of Happiness, a Statue of Liberty parody with Hillary Clinton’s face. Hit 100% completion and a secret mission opens up where you help a hunter track down a Sasquatch. Eat the right peyote plant out in the wilderness and you can turn into the thing yourself.
Los Santos is also packed with nostalgic callbacks. During the “Hood Safari” mission, three characters who look exactly like CJ, Big Smoke, and Ryder from San Andreas ride past on bikes, mirroring an early mission from the 2004 original almost beat for beat. There’s also a coded message under a highway overpass that decodes to Big Smoke’s famous line: “All you had to do was follow the damn train, CJ.”
Then there’s the sealed hatch, sitting underwater off the eastern coast of the map, dead ringer for the one from Lost. You can’t open it, but there’s a steady tapping coming from inside. Decode the Morse and it reads: “Hey, you never call, how’d you fancy going bowling?” A pretty perfect callback to Roman Bellic’s endless phone calls in GTA 4.
The Secrets Are the Point
None of these secrets show up on a checklist or a quest marker. Nobody’s guiding you to Apartment 3C or telling you to snipe the moon, you either stumble onto it by accident or hear about it from someone who did, and both feel equally rewarding. That’s really the whole trick. Rockstar builds worlds big enough to get lost in, then quietly buries things in the corners that reward the players willing to actually get lost.
It also says something about how these games have aged. A joke about the Driver series from 2001 still gets brought up on forums today. A hatch modeled after Lost still gets rediscovered by new players who’ve never seen the show.
