Captain John Price has spent most of Modern Warfare operating in the gray area between following orders and doing what he believes the mission requires. By the time Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 begins, that gray area is gone.

Task Force 141 has been disbanded. Price is an outlaw. Ghost and Gaz have been ordered to capture or kill their former captain, while Price continues hunting the people he believes are responsible for Soap’s death and the collapse of his team.

That is a major change for a character who once created Task Force 141 specifically to handle threats conventional chains of command could not. To understand how he ended up being hunted by the same people who once followed him, you have to go back through the rebooted Modern Warfare timeline.

Spoiler warning: this recap contains major campaign spoilers for Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare II, and Modern Warfare III. It stops at the setup for Modern Warfare 4.

The original Modern Warfare Price

Before the reboot, Captain Price already had one complete Modern Warfare story.

In the original timeline, Price appears as a lieutenant during the 1996 mission in Pripyat, serving under Captain MacMillan. Their target is Russian ultranationalist Imran Zakhaev. Price hits Zakhaev with a Barrett .50 caliber rifle, taking off his arm but failing to kill him, and the pair are forced to escape through the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

Years later, Price commands Bravo Team of the 22nd SAS Regiment and becomes one of the central figures in the fight against Zakhaev and, later, Vladimir Makarov.

That version of Price accumulated several aliases, including Prisoner 627 and Black Viking, along with deliberately ridiculous stories about his origins. Activision once joked that he may have been raised around the British Army or even assembled from spare parts left over by previous SAS soldiers.

Those details belong to the original continuity, however. Modern Warfare was rebooted in 2019 with a new version of Price and a rebuilt timeline.

Where does the rebooted Price’s story begin?

The current timeline begins with the theft of weaponized chlorine gas following a CIA and Marine operation in Verdansk.

Twenty-four hours later, Al-Qatala terrorists attack Piccadilly Circus in London. Captain Price and Sergeant Kyle Garrick, later known as Gaz, become involved in the response, eventually tracing the wider crisis to Urzikstan.

There, Farah Karim’s Urzikstan Liberation Force is fighting both Al-Qatala and an illegal Russian occupation commanded by General Roman Barkov. Price, Gaz, CIA officer Alex Keller, Station Chief Kate Laswell, and Farah eventually work together against both threats.

The campaign ends with Farah killing Barkov and the chemical weapons facility being destroyed. The immediate threat is over, but Price comes away from the operation convinced that another kind of unit is needed, one able to respond quickly without being trapped inside normal military bureaucracy.

How was Task Force 141 created?

At the end of Modern Warfare, Price asks Laswell for personnel files on Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, Johnny “Soap” MacTavish, and Simon “Ghost” Riley.

They become the core of Task Force 141, a tier-one counterterrorism unit led by Price and supported by Laswell. Its defining advantage is authority to act quickly and, when necessary, bypass conventional military channels.

That independence fits Price perfectly. He is willing to bend procedure if he believes the alternative is allowing a threat to grow unchecked. The problem is that Task Force 141 still ultimately operates within a larger command structure, and Modern Warfare II reveals what happens when that structure is hiding something from the people carrying out its missions.

Why did Task Force 141 turn against Shepherd?

General Shepherd secretly arranges the illegal transfer of American ballistic missiles to U.S. allies in the Middle East with help from Shadow Company.

The operation goes wrong when Russian ultranationalists belonging to the Konni Group intercept the shipment. The missiles eventually pass through Iranian Major Hassan Zyani and the Las Almas Cartel, turning Shepherd’s unauthorized operation into an international disaster.

Instead of admitting what happened, Shepherd tries to bury the evidence. Ghost and Soap eventually discover that the missiles they are chasing are American-made, and Shepherd orders them to ignore where the weapons came from.

Then Shadow Company turns directly on Task Force 141 and Los Vaqueros in Las Almas.

For Price, that betrayal changes the problem completely. The danger is no longer only the enemy outside the system. Senior officers inside it are willing to sacrifice his people to hide their own mistakes.

What happened between Price, Makarov, and Soap?

Campaign Trailer | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III

Modern Warfare III brings Vladimir Makarov into the center of the reboot timeline.

Makarov uses false-flag operations and escalating attacks to destabilize the West. His plans eventually lead Task Force 141 to the Channel Tunnel, where Price and Soap attempt to stop a dirty bomb from being detonated.

While Soap works on the device, Makarov ambushes them. Soap lunges at Makarov while protecting Price, but Makarov shoots him in the head and escapes.

Soap’s death is the turning point in Price’s story. Shepherd has already lied to Task Force 141, covered up the missile disaster, and ordered Shadow Company to turn on the unit. Now Makarov has killed one of Price’s closest operators while remaining free.

Price stops treating Shepherd’s actions as something that can still be resolved through military procedure.

Why did Captain Price kill Shepherd?

Price blames Shepherd not only for betraying Task Force 141 but also for helping create the conditions that allowed Makarov to grow stronger.

Shepherd’s attempt to save himself after the missile operation led him to turn Shadow Company against 141. According to Activision’s own recap, that disruption gave Makarov more room to expand his operations without interference.

After Soap’s death, Price takes matters into his own hands. He enters Shepherd’s office at night and assassinates him.

That is the moment Price stops merely bending the rules. He kills an American general on his own authority and immediately becomes someone the system can no longer tolerate.

Why are Ghost and Gaz hunting Price?

Modern Warfare 4 begins with Task Force 141 disbanded and Price on the run.

Ghost and Gaz have been tasked with capturing or killing their former captain. The important part is that neither relationship has suddenly become simple.

These are operators who spent years trusting Price’s judgment. But Shepherd’s assassination forces them to confront something Task Force 141 had always tried to keep under control: how far can Price go before “doing what needs to be done” stops being justification and becomes its own danger?

Gaz: “There’s a line… and it’s one we don’t cross.”

Price: “We draw the line wherever we need it, don’t we?”

That exchange gets directly at Price’s new position. Ghost and Gaz are no longer only asking whether their former commander has broken rules. They are asking whether he still has any limits left.

Why is Price working with Valeria?

Price’s outlaw status also changes who he can work with.

Valeria Garza, also known as El Sin Nombre, leads the Las Almas Cartel and was directly involved in the missile network Task Force 141 dismantled during Modern Warfare II.

Under normal circumstances, she would be one of the last people Price would choose as an ally. Modern Warfare 4 puts them on the same side because Price has run out of conventional options and a larger threat is beginning to emerge.

Activision describes their relationship as an uneasy alliance built around illicit operations. It is another sign of how far Price has moved from the structure he once commanded. The man who created Task Force 141 to fight outside normal channels is now operating outside Task Force 141 itself.

Where does Price stand in Modern Warfare 4?

Price’s personal hunt now unfolds alongside a much larger war.

North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of South Korea, beginning with the assault on Hajin City. Private Park Hyun Jun and his squad fight on the Korean front while Price conducts his own shadow campaign elsewhere.

At the same time, an unknown weapon of war is being moved toward an enemy called the Archer. Official campaign material describes the weapon as powerful enough to shift the global balance of power.

That eventually pulls Price’s personal mission into the wider conflict. His hunt for revenge is no longer separate from the war breaking out on the Korean Peninsula. The two threads are converging.

Ghost and GazOrdered to capture or kill Price
Kate LaswellStill in contact with Price, but increasingly wary
Valeria GarzaUneasy ally in Price’s off-book operations
The ArcherConnected to a weapon capable of changing the balance of power
Korean conflictPrice’s shadow operation eventually intersects with the wider invasion

How has Captain Price changed?

The rebooted Price starts as an SAS captain willing to bend rules when the mission demands it. He creates Task Force 141 because he believes some threats require operators who can act faster than normal command structures allow.

But for most of that period, he still has boundaries around him. Laswell provides intelligence and institutional support. Task Force 141 has authorization. There is still a difference between operating aggressively within the system and abandoning it entirely.

Shepherd’s cover-up starts breaking that relationship. Shadow Company’s betrayal turns the system directly against Price’s team. Soap’s death makes the conflict with Makarov personal. Killing Shepherd completes the transformation.

By Modern Warfare 4, Price has reached the logical extreme of the philosophy he has carried throughout the reboot: if the people above him will not make the right decision, he will make it himself.

That makes him more interesting than another straightforward military hero. Price still believes he is protecting people and stopping threats. What Modern Warfare 4 puts under pressure is whether that belief still justifies the methods he is willing to use.
