Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered launches October 1, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. It combines Dynasty Warriors 3 with the Xtreme Legends expansion, rebuilds its battlefields and more than 40 returning officers in Unreal Engine 5, and adds new combat mechanics, weapon customization, scenarios, and the option to switch back toward a more classic ruleset.
This is not a remake that throws away the structure of the 2001 original. Omega Force is deliberately preserving the 1 vs. 1,000 battlefield formula, officer progression, Musou attacks, split-screen play, and Xtreme Legends content that helped define the series.
The difference is that the old foundation now comes with smoother controls, modern defensive options, new scenarios, Weapon Fusion, updated presentation, and one visitor from a much newer Dynasty Warriors game.

Release date and platforms
Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered releases worldwide on October 1, 2026.
The final platform lineup is:
- PlayStation 5
- Nintendo Switch 2
- Xbox Series X|S
- PC via Steam
The original announcement also listed the first Nintendo Switch, but the final release moved to Switch 2 only on Nintendo hardware.
There are no PS4 or Xbox One editions announced.
What does Complete Edition Remastered include?
The name is literal. Koei Tecmo is combining Dynasty Warriors 3 and Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends into one release.
That matters because Xtreme Legends was more than a small add-on.
It expanded the game with new stories for seven officers, including Lu Bu, Meng Huo, and Yuan Shao, while also adding weapons, bodyguard customization, and four Challenge Mode variants.
The remaster therefore starts from a much broader content base than the original standalone Dynasty Warriors 3.
That complete package includes:
- the original Dynasty Warriors 3 scenarios
- Xtreme Legends officer stories
- more than 40 returning officers
- bodyguard customization
- additional weapons
- Challenge Mode content
- two-player modes
- new remaster-exclusive mechanics and scenarios
It is closer to a definitive revival of that particular era of Dynasty Warriors than a simple graphical remaster.
Gameplay fundamentals
Dynasty Warriors 3 helped establish the Musou formula that Omega Force would spend the next two decades expanding.
You choose a famous officer from the Three Kingdoms period and enter large-scale battles filled with regular soldiers, allied units, enemy officers, and changing battlefield objectives.
The basic spectacle is the familiar 1 vs. 1,000 fantasy. One officer can cut through enormous groups of ordinary troops with wide-reaching attack strings before encountering commanders who demand more attention.
But Dynasty Warriors is not simply about raising a KO counter.
Battlefields are military operations. You need to pay attention to where allied officers are fighting, which enemy commanders remain active, where objectives are developing, and when it is worth abandoning one skirmish to influence another part of the map.
The original Dynasty Warriors 3 was also a particularly important entry for the series because it introduced or established systems that became long-term staples, including True Musou Attacks, simultaneous two-player play, and officer development.
Musou attacks
Musou attacks are powerful signature techniques that can tear through groups or give you a way to turn a difficult officer encounter around.
True Musou Attacks build on that concept with more powerful variations under the appropriate conditions.
Officer development
Characters become stronger through continued play, while weapons, equipment, and other progression systems reward returning to battles with different officers.
Growth items, equipment, and weapons earned in Free Mode can also carry across into other relevant modes.
Battlefield tactics still matter
The remaster modernizes the action, but it does not replace Dynasty Warriors 3 with the much denser battlefield design of Dynasty Warriors: Origins.
The intended appeal remains the older rhythm of moving across large maps, breaking through enemy lines, defeating key officers, and trying to prevent the wider battle from collapsing while you are busy launching soldiers into the air.
What has changed from the original?
The remaster is deliberately balancing preservation with modernization.
| Area | Original | Complete Edition Remastered |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics | PS2-era characters and battlefields | Characters and environments rebuilt using Unreal Engine 5 |
| Defense | Original guard and movement systems | Evasion, Just Evasion, and Perfect Power Guard |
| Weapons | Original weapon acquisition and equipment | New Weapon Fusion lets you transfer elemental properties and skills |
| Scenarios | Original game and Xtreme Legends scenarios | Additional high-difficulty scenarios unlocked through battle conditions |
| Controls | Original control model | Refined controls and playability |
| Ruleset | Original behavior | Normal and Classic Settings let players enable or disable newer features |
Evasion and Just Evasion
The new Evasion move gives officers a direct way to dodge attacks or disengage from immediate danger.
Time that dodge correctly against a strong enemy and it becomes a Just Evasion, creating a counterattack opportunity.
Perfect Power Guard
Perfect Power Guard builds on the older Power Guard mechanic. Deflecting an attack with the right timing can stun a strong opponent and open them up for retaliation.
Together, these systems make officer duels more reactive without rewriting the basic combat system around modern parries and counters.
Weapon Fusion
The new Weapon Fusion system gives unwanted weapons another purpose.
You can consume spare weapons as materials and transfer elemental properties or skills to another weapon, allowing more deliberate customization instead of relying entirely on finding a better drop.
Classic Settings are there for purists
Players who want something closer to the old experience are not forced to accept every new mechanic.
The System menu includes Normal Settings, which Koei Tecmo recommends for the updated experience, and Classic Settings, which disable or alter newer features to move gameplay closer to the original Dynasty Warriors 3.
That is an important design choice for a remaster of a game whose quirks are part of its appeal.
Game modes and progression
Complete Edition Remastered retains the major modes associated with Dynasty Warriors 3 and Xtreme Legends.
Musou Mode
Musou Mode is the main character-focused campaign structure.
You choose an officer and progress through battles connected to that character’s story during the Three Kingdoms era. The remaster also introduces new scenarios that can be unlocked by satisfying specific conditions during battles.
Free Mode
Free Mode removes many of the normal story restrictions.
You can pair officers with scenarios they would not ordinarily fight in, join unusual factions, and create hypothetical battlefield combinations.
Weapons, equipment, and growth items collected here carry over into other modes where applicable.
Challenge Mode
Challenge Mode is built around score chasing rather than campaign progression.
Its variants include challenges based on enemy counts, time, survival, and combo performance. Examples include Endurance, Time Attack, and Assault.
VS Mode
VS Mode turns the combat system into competitive local multiplayer.
Eight stages use different rules, ranging from officer duels to objective-based challenges such as defeating a required number of enemy soldiers before the other player.
Camp
The Camp menu is where you configure officers and bodyguards, manage equipment, and use the new Weapon Fusion system before returning to battle.
Two-player co-op and VS play
One of the most welcome returning features is offline two-player split-screen.
Two players can fight together in:
- Musou Mode
- Free Mode
- VS Mode
That preserves one of the features that made Dynasty Warriors 3 particularly memorable on PS2, when handing someone a second controller was one of the easiest ways to turn a Musou battlefield into controlled chaos.
Online co-op has not been announced as part of the remaster. The emphasis is on restoring the original local multiplayer experience.
Characters and new scenarios
The remaster brings back the complete roster of more than 40 officers from Dynasty Warriors 3, recreating their appearances for the Unreal Engine 5 presentation.
That includes familiar Wei, Wu, Shu, and other major officers from the Three Kingdoms period.
Xtreme Legends also restores its additional stories for seven officers, with Lu Bu, Meng Huo, and Yuan Shao among the confirmed examples.
The remaster then adds one particularly unusual guest: Ziluan from Dynasty Warriors: Origins.
Ziluan is the amnesiac wandering swordsman who served as the protagonist of Origins, making his inclusion a direct bridge between one of the newest Dynasty Warriors games and a remaster of one of its oldest defining entries.
New high-difficulty scenarios have also been added. These are unlocked by fulfilling particular conditions during battles and can feature large concentrations of officers.

Demo details
A free demo is available for PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.
It features a special version of the Battle of Hulao Gate and lets players choose from six officers:
- Zhao Yun
- Guan Yu
- Xiahou Dun
- Zhen Ji
- Zhou Yu
- Sun Shangxiang
The demo is designed to showcase the rebuilt visuals and modernized combat before throwing an elite enemy encounter into the battle near the end.
Demo save data does not transfer into the full game.
That makes it useful for checking how the new controls, dodges, defensive mechanics, and visual presentation feel, but not as an early start on progression.

A defining Musou game returns with room for old and new players
Dynasty Warriors 3 matters because so much of the series’ identity was already visible there: enormous armies, named officers cutting through entire formations, Musou attacks, character progression, split-screen play, and battlefields that are as much about where you go as how many soldiers you defeat.
Complete Edition Remastered keeps that structure instead of replacing it with a modern Dynasty Warriors template.
The Unreal Engine 5 rebuild and refined controls make it easier to approach in 2026, while Evasion, Perfect Power Guard, Weapon Fusion, and new scenarios give returning players something genuinely new to experiment with.
And if those changes move too far from what you remember, Classic Settings are waiting.
