Grand Theft Auto VI is almost certain to be one of 2026’s biggest releases. Rockstar has spent years building expectations around Jason, Lucia, Vice City, and the wider state of Leonida, and the game finally launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
But being the biggest game of the year does not automatically make it the most interesting one. GTA VI arrives with the weight of one of gaming’s most recognizable formulas behind it. We know the broad appeal: a huge Rockstar open world, crime, cars, characters, side activities, and the freedom to create chaos between missions.
Other games have a different advantage: we do not already know exactly what their identity will become. In 2026, that sense of discovery has made games such as The Blood of Dawnwalker and The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales interesting even after release, while Tides of Annihilation remains one of the more intriguing unknowns still on the horizon.
The point is not that GTA VI looks unexciting. It is that familiarity and anticipation are different things. New IPs can offer more uncertainty, stranger mechanics, and worlds where players have fewer assumptions about what comes next.

When GTA VI hype works against the mystery

GTA VI has a problem most games would love to have: expectations are almost impossibly high.
Rockstar is not simply expected to release a good open-world crime game. GTA VI is expected to push technical boundaries, deliver memorable protagonists, make Leonida feel unusually alive, improve on GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, and justify more than a decade between new mainline GTA releases.
The official material certainly gives players plenty to anticipate. Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos lead a crime story spanning modern Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, with Rockstar positioning the game as another enormous open-world production.
But GTA also comes with familiarity. Players already understand the basic fantasy Rockstar is selling, even if the details, systems, and story remain unknown. That can make a completely new game more intriguing simply because there are fewer expectations telling us what it is supposed to be.
What makes another game feel fresher?
Fresh does not necessarily mean revolutionary. Most games borrow heavily from something that already exists.
What matters is whether the combination creates a different reason to pay attention. In this case, three games stand out for different reasons:
- The Blood of Dawnwalker builds an RPG around limited time, missed opportunities, and a protagonist who plays differently during the day and night.
- Tides of Annihilation combines ruined modern London, Arthurian legend, spectral Knights of the Round Table, and enormous climbable enemies.
- The Adventures of Elliot takes Square Enix’s familiar HD-2D presentation out of turn-based RPG territory and builds a real-time action adventure around it.
Two of those games have now launched, so their appeal no longer has to be judged entirely from trailers.
The Blood of Dawnwalker already proved its idea works

The Blood of Dawnwalker launched on September 3, 2026, turning one of the provider draft’s biggest unknowns into something we can actually evaluate.
Its strongest hook remains the 30-day structure. Coen needs to save his family, but time is a limited resource. Important quests and decisions advance the calendar, which means helping one person can reduce the opportunities available somewhere else.
His identity changes the game too. Coen remains human during the day, with swordplay and ritualistic abilities, while night gives his vampiric side access to a different set of supernatural powers and traversal options.
That structure was unusual before release, and the player response suggests the experiment found an audience. Steam currently classifies the game as Very Positive, with roughly 87% positive English-language reviews and an even stronger recent-review percentage.
It did not need to reinvent the RPG. It only needed to make decisions, missed opportunities, and Coen’s dual nature matter enough to give Vale Sangora its own identity.

Tides of Annihilation is still the wildcard

Tides of Annihilation is the one game from the original draft that is still running almost entirely on potential.
Eclipse Glow Games has still not announced a release date. Steam lists it as “Coming soon,” while the official PlayStation page says the date is to be determined. That means it should no longer be presented as a confirmed 2026 release.
The concept remains unusual enough to watch closely. Gwendolyn moves through a shattered London where the modern city is merging with an Otherworld based on Arthurian mythology. More than a dozen spectral Knights of the Round Table can support her in battle, with different combinations changing how fights play out.
The enormous Colossal Knights are even stranger. They are not only boss-sized enemies. Eclipse Glow describes them as explorable spaces that players can climb and enter, turning their bodies into parts of the level itself.
That does not guarantee a great finished game. Until Tides of Annihilation launches, its place here is based on curiosity rather than a verdict. But the mixture of London, Avalon, companion Knights, and gigantic moving environments still offers the kind of uncertainty an established franchise cannot easily reproduce.
The Adventures of Elliot took HD-2D somewhere new

The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales also no longer needs to be discussed as an upcoming experiment. Square Enix and Claytechworks released it on June 18, 2026 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
The key idea was simple but effective: take the HD-2D visual style associated with games such as Octopath Traveler and use it for a real-time action RPG inspired by classic top-down adventures.
Elliot fights with multiple weapon types while Faie supports him with abilities during combat and exploration. The adventure moves across four eras, using time travel to revisit the same world under different circumstances.
The reception was positive rather than overwhelming. The PS5 version sits at a 78 Metascore, while Steam’s user rating is also around 78% positive overall, with recent feedback somewhat stronger. Critics generally praised its combat, exploration, visual style, and dungeons while being more divided on the story, pacing, and repetition.
That is still an interesting outcome. Elliot did not need to become one of 2026’s highest-rated games to prove the original idea had value. Square Enix used a familiar visual identity for a different kind of RPG, and the result found a generally positive audience.

How the four games compare now
| Game | Status | Main appeal | Reality check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto VI | November 19, 2026 | Rockstar’s enormous modern Vice City and Leonida sandbox | Still unreleased, with expectations almost impossibly high |
| The Blood of Dawnwalker | Available now | Limited time, choices, vampires, day/night play | The unusual RPG systems landed better than some of its rougher combat elements |
| Tides of Annihilation | Release date TBA | Arthurian mythology inside a shattered modern London | Still completely unproven as a finished game |
| The Adventures of Elliot | Available now | HD-2D visuals, real-time action, weapons, puzzles, and time travel | Generally positive rather than a breakout critical hit |
That difference in status matters. Dawnwalker and Elliot have already had to prove that their unusual ideas work beyond a trailer. Tides still has the advantage of mystery. GTA VI sits somewhere else entirely: enormously anticipated, heavily scrutinized, and expected to deliver at a scale none of the other three games are attempting.

Sometimes the unknown is more exciting
GTA VI does not need to lose this comparison for the other games to be interesting. Rockstar is making something on a completely different scale, and expectations around its November launch are enormous for a reason.
But scale is not the only source of excitement.
Dawnwalker offered a new fantasy world and then largely convinced players that its unusual RPG systems were worth exploring. Elliot took a familiar Square Enix visual style into real-time action and earned generally positive reception. Tides of Annihilation remains an unanswered question built around one of the stranger action-game pitches currently in development.
GTA VI brings confidence: players know Rockstar’s history and roughly what kind of experience they are waiting for. New IPs bring uncertainty. Sometimes that uncertainty is exactly what makes them more exciting to follow.
