Among Us is a simple but incredibly fun online social game that puts emphasis on teamwork and communication skills, but it will also test your bluff and cunning abilities when you’re chosen to play the role of a traitor.

When the game begins, most players assume the role of Crewmates who must perform various, simple tasks during the game. A few other players, however, are secretly picked to play the role of Impostors, who must blend into the team and play along while eliminating unaware Crewmates and avoiding being called out by the other players.

As the game goes on and new dead bodies are found, Crewmates can call for Emergency Meetings to cast their votes on who they think is the suspect; whoever gets the most votes is kicked out of the group. Crewmates win when all Impostors are identified and eliminated; likewise, Impostors win when they successfully kill all Crewmates. Both teams can also win by either securing (Crewmates) or sabotaging (Impostors) the map’s critical system.

Impostors and Crewmates are the two main character roles in Among Us, but there are more; here’s what you need to know.

Crewmate

Crewmate is the most common type of Among Us characters. It’s the default role assigned to every player at the beginning of the game, with the exception of up to a few players who will play the role of Impostors.

Crewmates can freely walk around the map and perform a variety of system maintenance tasks to keep it running. Completing all tasks will win the game, just like identifying and eliminating all Impostors.

Crewmates have access to certain abilities to make their work a bit easier. Abilities include an option to show the location of all players on the map and use surveillance system cameras to monitor vital parts of the map.

Crewmates can also call for Emergency Meetings, during which everyone gathers in one room and casts votes on who they should kick out next.

Dead Crewmates become ghosts who can spectate and finish tasks, while Impostor ghosts can continue sabotaging; ghosts cannot interact with living players.

Impostor

Impostors are the cunning ones; the traitors who must either kill all Crewmates or sabotage the system to win. Up to 3 Impostors are chosen at random for each game; all players have the same odds of becoming an Impostor, regardless of their role history.

Impostors can’t perform tasks, but they can pretend they’re working to avoid suspicion from Crewmates. They can also perform a variety of sabotage actions, from slightly annoying but generally harmless ones, such as turning off the lights, to potentially lethal ones, such as damaging the oxygen systems that require immediate response from the crew.

As opposed to Crewmates, Impostors can freely use the vents to quickly change locations and surprise unaware opponents.

Dead Crewmates become ghosts and can still complete their tasks; Impostor ghosts can continue sabotaging

Crewmate – Scientist

Crewmates have several specialized variants, one of which is Scientist.

Scientists are equipped with a special scanning device that allows them to remotely check everyone’s health state – or, to be more specific, whether a character is alive or dead – from any place on the map, which may help with identifying Impostors who are expected to be in close vicinity of the victim.

The main advantage of the scanning device is the fact that you can instantly see whenever a player dies without the need to wait for someone to report a dead body.

The device works for a very short time and needs to be recharged before it can be used again.

Crewmate – Engineer

Engineers are the only Crewmates who can use the vents. They can also hide inside them for up to 5 seconds – during this time they can’t be killed.

After using the vent, Engineers must wait a bit or complete a task before they can use it again.

Crewmate – Guardian Angel

The first Crewmate who gets killed becomes a Guardian Angel, rather than a Ghost. It can be treated as a form of consolidation reward for those who get eliminated quickly. Depending on the game’s settings, more Guardian Angels can be assigned; in this case, the first X number of Crewmates who die become the angels, until the limit is reached.

Guardian Angels can still actively participate in the game by providing a special shield to Crewmates. The shield protects a chosen Crewmate from death for 30 seconds with a 60-second cooldown.

Crewmate – Noisemaker

Noisemakers will automatically trigger an alarm whenever they’re killed, allowing the other Crewmates to find the Impostor more easily.

Crewmate – Tracker

Trackers have a unique ability that allows them to track other players, which can be an invaluable tool for detecting Impostors.

Impostor – Shapeshifter

Just like the Crewmates, Impostors also have some extra variants that give them special abilities.
Shapeshifters, for example, can take the form of any other player for a short duration to confuse the crew.

Impostor – Phantom

Phantoms, on the other hand, can become completely invisible, allowing them to sneak behind unaware Crewmates and stab them in the back.

Crewmate – Detective

Detectives keep case notes and can use an Interrogate ability to pressure suspects during discussions (added in v17.0.0, Sep 2025).

Impostor – Viper

Vipers kill with acid that dissolves bodies, making them harder to find and report (added in v17.0.0, Sep 2025).

Familiarizing yourself with the existing character roles in Among Us will give you a better idea of what they’re capable of, so you can play them better and know how to counter them when they’re on the opposing team.
