Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Early Access is live now, giving eligible digital buyers access to the full extraction mode three days before the October 23 launch.

This is not a limited DMZ trial. Players can deploy into Hajin, complete Story Missions and Dynamic Operations, build out their Forward Operating Base, level weapons, unlock attachments, earn camos, and begin the separate DMZ progression track before multiplayer opens.

The biggest reason to start early is progression. Activision explicitly confirms that weapon levels, attachments, and camos earned in DMZ can be used in Multiplayer when Modern Warfare 4 fully launches on October 23. DMZ XP also contributes to the standard Player Level track, while the mode simultaneously runs its own 70-level progression system.

Access is tied to a digital preorder or prepurchase of either the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, Battle.net, or Nintendo Switch 2.

Quick answer: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Early Access began October 20. Eligible digital Standard and Vault Edition buyers can access all of DMZ now. Weapon XP, attachments, and camos earned before launch are confirmed to carry into Multiplayer on October 23, while DMZ itself uses persistent progression built around a separate 70-level track and the Forward Operating Base.

How to access Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Early Access

Activision opened DMZ Early Access on October 20 for players who digitally preordered or prepurchased Modern Warfare 4.

Both the Standard Digital Edition and Vault Edition qualify. Supported platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, Battle.net, and Nintendo Switch 2.

RequirementDMZ Early Access
Digital Standard EditionYes
Vault EditionYes
Eligible digital preorder / prepurchaseRequired before launch
Game Pass subscriptionNo launch access through Game Pass

Modern Warfare 4 is not launching through Game Pass, so a subscription alone does not grant access. Activision says the game requires a separate purchase at launch.

Is Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Early Access the full mode?

Yes. Activision’s wording is unusually clear here: eligible players can gain Early Access to all of DMZ.

That means the October 20 period is not a short tutorial slice or restricted preview. You can enter Hajin, complete missions, loot, fight AI forces and rival Operators, craft gear, develop your FOB, and work through DMZ progression before the rest of Modern Warfare 4 opens on October 23.

What DMZ Early Access progress carries into launch?

The most important confirmed crossover is weapon progression.

Activision specifically tells players to use DMZ Early Access to get a head start on weapons. Weapon XP earned in DMZ increases weapon levels, unlocks attachments, and progresses the early camo grind. Those unlocks will then be available in Multiplayer when the full game releases on October 23.

Confirmed to matter at launch:

  • Weapon levels earned in DMZ
  • Unlocked weapon attachments
  • Military and eligible Special Camo progress
  • XP earned toward the shared Level 1–55 Player progression

There is an important distinction between shared progression and DMZ-specific progression. Your DMZ Level is its own system and does not simply become your Multiplayer level. DMZ XP can contribute to the standard 1–55 Player track, but Multiplayer XP does not increase your separate DMZ Level.

Activision describes the mode itself as featuring persistent progression and has not announced an October 23 wipe. However, it has not published a separate blanket statement promising that every single stash item or FOB state is specifically protected from a launch-day reset. The confirmed cross-mode carryover is weapon progression, attachments, camos, and shared Player XP.

DMZ has its own 70-level progression track

Modern Warfare 4 separates DMZ progression from the normal Multiplayer ladder.

Multiplayer runs through Levels 1–55 before Prestige. DMZ has a dedicated 70-level progression track built around activities inside the extraction mode.

Operators move through a rugged outdoor combat zone.

You earn DMZ XP through Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, Side Ops, and other activities. Progress unlocks new FOB Stations, upgrades, 3D Printer recipes, Operator skins, consumables, Survival Kits, gear, and Fire Support.

This means a failed extraction is not necessarily wasted time. Losing valuable equipment hurts, but the broader progression system gives each deployment longer-term value beyond whatever makes it into your backpack at exfil.

The Forward Operating Base is your persistent DMZ hub

The biggest structural change from the old DMZ is the Forward Operating Base, or FOB.

This is your command center between deployments. As you complete Operations and increase your DMZ Level, the FOB grows from a basic staging area into a base containing more than a dozen Stations.

Key systems include:

  • Operators: manage Active Duty Operators, status, and Traits.
  • Stash / Loadout: store extracted weapons, gear, crafting ingredients, and other resources.
  • DMZ Orders: follow mission directives that introduce systems and advance the DMZ story.
  • 3D Printer: craft gear, backpacks, consumables, equipment, and upgrades using collected ingredients.
  • Vendor: buy and manage useful deployment resources.
  • Gunsmith: purchase eligible weapons and modify them with unlocked attachments.
  • Boss Board: track high-value enemies and larger threats.

In other words, DMZ now has much more of a between-runs progression layer. Extracting a rare ingredient or Weapon Manual can matter because it expands what you can prepare before the next infiltration.

What do you actually do in Hajin?

Hajin is a large Exclusion Zone created in the aftermath of the Modern Warfare 4 campaign. Players enter as off-the-books Operators tasked with recovering technology and resources while navigating both hostile factions and other player squads.

You can deploy solo or with a squad and choose how aggressively to pursue objectives. Story Missions advance the narrative, Dynamic Operations introduce multi-stage objectives, Side Ops offer additional activities, and high-value targets add extra risk.

The map includes locations such as the Fallout reactor, Prison complex, Hajin City, and Military Base, with hidden areas, waterways, vehicles, weather changes, and escalating enemy responses affecting each run.

The core decision remains familiar: extract now with what you have, or stay longer for a better reward and risk losing the gear you are carrying.

What should you do first in DMZ Early Access?

If your main goal is to prepare for Multiplayer, start by picking one or two weapons you expect to use after October 23 and level them consistently.

That gives you a practical launch-day advantage without relying on temporary loot. Attachments and camos unlocked through weapon progression are explicitly shared into Multiplayer, so those hours remain useful even if extraction games are not normally your main Call of Duty mode.

If you plan to stay with DMZ long term, focus instead on Orders and FOB development. Unlocking additional Stations and recipes expands the tools available before each run, while successful extractions build your stash and give future Operators more options.
