Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is one of the stronger big-budget ports on Nintendo Switch 2, but there are a few important compromises to know about before buying it.

The game targets 30 FPS in both docked and handheld play. Docked rendering sits around 1080p, while portable mode renders around 720p with minor dynamic-resolution behavior and uses NVIDIA DLSS reconstruction to produce a cleaner image on the Switch 2’s 1080p screen.

The other big thing is the physical edition. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade uses a Game-Key Card on Switch 2, not a traditional cartridge containing the complete game. You still get a physical card and need it inserted to play, but the actual game must first be downloaded. Nintendo lists the installation at 90.4 GB, while its European product page warns that a download of up to 95 GB may be required.

Buying advice: Switch 2 is a very good version if portable play matters to you. It delivers a largely stable 30 FPS, strong image quality, PS5-style lighting, INTERmission, HDR when docked, and much faster loading than the original PS4 release. If you will play almost entirely on a TV and care strongly about 60 FPS, PS5 or a capable PC remains the better technical choice.

Research basis: Official Nintendo and Square Enix product information, Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card documentation, and Digital Foundry’s final technical analysis.

Checked: Resolution, frame rate, DLSS behavior, visual cutbacks, storage, physical format, included content, demo support, HDR, and save-data features.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE - Launch Trailer - Nintendo Switch 2

Despite the shorthand people often use when searching for it, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is not available on the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo and Square Enix list the game specifically as Nintendo Switch 2 software.

You cannot insert the physical Switch 2 version into an original Switch and play a downgraded edition. There is no Switch 1 version to upgrade from either.

The Switch 2 edition launched on January 22, 2026 and is based on Intergrade, the enhanced version originally developed for PS5. That distinction matters because this is not simply the old PS4 build running on Nintendo hardware.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Switch 2 frame rate: Is it 30 or 60 FPS?

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade targets 30 FPS on Switch 2 in both docked and handheld modes. There is no Performance Mode that raises the target to 60 FPS.

Digital Foundry’s testing found the docked version particularly solid. Normal gameplay essentially holds the 30 FPS target, including battles and busy areas of Midgar. Small frame drops can appear around certain camera cuts in cinematics, but they are not representative of ordinary gameplay.

Handheld mode is also built around 30 FPS. It is slightly less rigid, with occasional minor drops reported during cinematics, transitions, or demanding camera movement, but the general gameplay experience remains close to the same target.

If you are used to PS5: the most noticeable downgrade is frame rate. PS5 offers a 60 FPS Performance Mode, while Switch 2 remains at 30 FPS. The Nintendo version compensates with strong frame pacing and surprisingly good image quality, but it does not reproduce the smoothness of 60 FPS.

Docked and handheld resolution explained

The resolution story is more interesting because the Switch 2 port makes effective use of NVIDIA’s DLSS reconstruction.

ModeRenderingTarget FPSImage processing
DockedAround 1920×108030 FPSDLSS-assisted image reconstruction / anti-aliasing
HandheldAround 1280×720 internally, with minor dynamic behavior30 FPSDLSS reconstructs toward the Switch 2 display’s 1080p presentation

Docked mode is therefore a 1080p-class presentation rather than a 4K game. Even if your Switch 2 is connected to a 4K television, Remake itself is not rendering at native 4K.

Portable mode drops the underlying image closer to 720p. Digital Foundry also observed minor signs of dynamic resolution scaling, but DLSS reconstructs the image for the system’s higher-resolution display. The result is considerably cleaner than a raw 720p image stretched across the Switch 2 screen would suggest.

The trade-off is that reconstruction is not perfect. Fine detail in motion, hair, fences, vegetation, and other subpixel elements can show visible dithering, shimmer, or reconstruction artifacts. Those issues become easier to notice in handheld mode because its source resolution is lower.

How do the graphics compare with PS4 and PS5?

The easiest way to describe the Switch 2 version is as a hybrid of the PS4 and PS5 Intergrade versions.

It is not just the old PS4 presentation at a lower resolution. Square Enix carried over substantial parts of Intergrade’s upgraded visual presentation, particularly its lighting and a number of higher-quality environmental assets.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade Switch 2 Review: A PS5/PS4 Hybrid Boosted By DLSS

Digital Foundry found many textures to be much closer to the PS5 version than the infamous PS4 originals. Signs are clearer, several environmental surfaces are upgraded, and the revised Intergrade lighting helps Midgar retain much of the PS5 version’s visual character.

Not everything survives intact. Shadow quality is closer to the PS4 build, NPC and character detail distance also tracks closer to PS4, some volumetric effects are reduced, and certain wall or ground textures remain noticeably lower quality than on PS5.

Visual featureSwitch 2 comparison
LightingCloser to PS5 Intergrade
Environmental texturesMixed, but several important assets are upgraded over PS4
Shadow mapsCloser to PS4
NPC / character LODCloser to PS4
Image reconstructionDLSS produces a sharper result than the raw resolution suggests, with some dithering and motion artifacts

The practical result is better than a specification sheet might suggest. Switch 2 is not reproducing PS5 at 30 FPS pixel for pixel, but it is also not simply a portable PS4 version. It selectively keeps some of Intergrade’s most noticeable improvements while reducing expensive features that matter less on a smaller display.

Is the physical version a cartridge or Game-Key Card?

The Nintendo Switch 2 physical release of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is a Game-Key Card.

That distinction is important. A traditional Nintendo Switch 2 game card stores the game data itself. A Game-Key Card stores the entitlement needed to download and launch the game, but not the full game files.

  1. Insert the Game-Key Card into your Switch 2.
  2. Connect to the internet the first time.
  3. Download the game data to internal storage or a microSD Express card.
  4. After installation, you can play without an internet connection.
  5. However, the Game-Key Card must remain inserted whenever you want to launch the game.

Nintendo also confirms that a Nintendo Account is not required simply to download game data from a Game-Key Card. And unlike a digital purchase tied to one account, the physical card can be moved to another Switch 2. The new system will need to download the game before playing it there.

In other words, it still behaves like physical media when it comes to lending or reselling the card, but it does not give you an offline archive of the entire game sitting on the cartridge.

Does buying physical save storage space?

No. This is probably the most important drawback of the Game-Key Card format here. Because Remake Intergrade still needs to be downloaded, the physical edition takes effectively the same large chunk of console storage as the digital version.

What about the Magic: The Gathering booster?

The original physical Day One release included a Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy Play Booster with 15 random English-language cards. Square Enix marked that as a limited in-box bonus. Current Standard Edition stock should therefore not be assumed to include the booster unless the specific retailer or box explicitly says so.

The physical Switch 2 edition also includes a reversible cover and the same useful in-game bonus equipment included with the standard Intergrade package.

How much storage space do you need?

Nintendo’s current North American listing reports a 90.4 GB game file size. Nintendo’s UK page goes a little further and warns that, regardless of the displayed storage requirement, a download of up to 95 GB may be required.

For practical buying purposes, leave roughly 95 GB free rather than trying to squeeze the game into exactly 90.4 GB. Updates and system storage overhead can make planning around the absolute minimum inconvenient.

If internal space is becoming tight, Nintendo Switch 2 games can also be stored on compatible microSD Express storage. A standard older microSD card is not the equivalent replacement for Switch 2 game storage.

Physical buyer warning: The box does not remove the storage requirement. If your main reason for choosing physical games is keeping huge installs off the console, this particular release does not solve that problem.

What is included with Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on Switch 2?

The Standard Edition is already the complete version of the first Remake chapter. You do not need to buy Yuffie’s story separately.

  • Final Fantasy VII Remake main game
  • FF7R EPISODE INTERmission starring Yuffie
  • Cacstar weapon for Yuffie
  • Midgar Bangle
  • Shinra Bangle
  • Corneo Armlet
  • Superstar Belt
  • Mako Crystal
  • Seraphic Earrings
  • Carbuncle summon
  • Chocobo Chick summon
  • Cactuar summon

The Digital Deluxe Edition adds an art book and mini-soundtrack rather than another required story chapter. If your goal is simply to play the complete game before moving into Rebirth, the Standard Edition already covers the important content.

That is particularly useful now that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is also available on Nintendo Switch 2. Save data from Remake’s main story can unlock Leviathan Summoning Materia in Rebirth, while INTERmission save data unlocks Ramuh.

Can you try Final Fantasy VII Remake on Switch 2 before buying?

Yes. Nintendo offers a free demo, and this is probably the best buying advice in the whole article.

The demo contains the entire opening chapter, including the Mako Reactor 1 bombing mission. Your save data can be transferred into the full game, so trying the port does not mean replaying everything if you decide to buy it.

Creating demo save data also lets you claim Revival Earrings and a Survival Set in the full game through the Gift Box menu.

If you are unsure whether 30 FPS bothers you, whether DLSS artifacts are noticeable on your TV, or whether the handheld image is sharp enough for you, downloading the demo is more useful than any screenshot comparison. It lets you test the exact console, screen, and display setup you will actually use.

HDR, loading times, audio and other Switch 2 details

HDR

Nintendo lists HDR output for compatible TVs. Digital Foundry also found the HDR presentation to be one of the stronger visual features of the port, with highlights and dark areas preserving the dramatic lighting that defines Midgar.

Loading

Loading is substantially better than the original base PS4 release. Technical testing places Switch 2 well ahead of PS4, although PS5 remains faster.

Audio

The game supports surround sound through linear PCM. Audio languages include English, French, German, and Japanese, while the interface supports a wider selection of languages.

Save Data Cloud

Nintendo lists Save Data Cloud support. That makes the Switch 2 edition a better fit if you already use Nintendo Switch Online and want cloud backup for a long RPG save.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Switch 2 vs. PS5: Which version should you buy?

The choice becomes simple once you decide whether portability or raw performance matters more.

FeatureSwitch 2PS5
Maximum frame rate30 FPS60 FPS Performance Mode
High-resolution option1080p-class docked presentation4K-focused Graphics Mode
Portable playYesNo native handheld mode
LoadingFastFaster
INTERmissionIncludedIncluded with Intergrade

If your Switch 2 spends most of its life in the dock and you already own a PS5, there is little technical reason to move away from PlayStation. The PS5 version is smoother, can target 4K, has better shadows and detail distance, and loads faster.

The Switch 2 argument is portability. Being able to play a full Intergrade version of Midgar in handheld mode without turning the game into a blurry or unstable mess is the defining feature of this port.

And if you intend to continue the trilogy entirely on Nintendo hardware, there is another incentive: Rebirth is already available on Switch 2, and Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on Switch 2 on April 8, 2027. You can therefore keep the full modern trilogy on one Nintendo platform.

Is Final Fantasy VII Remake worth buying on Switch 2?

Yes, if portability is one of the reasons you own a Switch 2. Square Enix made sensible compromises rather than cutting the game down indiscriminately. The port holds close to 30 FPS, retains Intergrade’s upgraded lighting, looks surprisingly sharp through DLSS, loads much faster than PS4, includes INTERmission, and works well as the first step into the full trilogy on Nintendo hardware.

The drawbacks are equally clear. There is no 60 FPS mode. Fine details can produce reconstruction artifacts. Shadows and draw distance sit below PS5. And the physical edition being a Game-Key Card means collectors still need to download roughly 90 to 95 GB instead of having the whole game preserved on the cartridge.

For someone buying Remake specifically to play in bed, on a commute, or away from the TV, those compromises are easy to understand. For a docked-only player choosing between Switch 2 and PS5, PS5 remains the stronger technical version.
