To catch a Sturgeon in Stardew Valley, fish in the Mountain Lake during Summer or Winter between 6am and 7pm. Weather does not need to be rainy, although Sturgeon are most common during rainy Summer days. Casting at least three tiles away from shore also improves your chances of hooking one.
Sturgeon have a difficulty rating of 78 and use a mixed movement pattern, so they can be a tough catch at lower Fishing levels. A larger fishing bar, an Iridium Rod and the right tackle can make the fight much easier.

Stardew Valley Sturgeon location
The main place to catch a Sturgeon in Stardew Valley is the Mountain Lake, north of Pelican Town beside the Mines and the Carpenter’s Shop.
Where your bobber lands matters more than simply performing the longest possible cast. Sturgeon become more likely when the bobber lands at least three tiles from shore, so fish from positions that give you access to deeper water.
- Mountain Lake: The standard and most reliable Sturgeon location.
- Lake islands and open shoreline: Useful because they allow you to place the bobber farther from land.
- Deeper fishing zones: Aim to land the bobber at least three tiles from shore for better Sturgeon odds.
- Wilderness Farm: Sturgeon can also appear on this farm map during Summer and Winter.
If you see a fishing bubble in a suitable part of the lake, it can also be worth targeting. Bubbles dramatically increase bite frequency, allowing you to attempt more catches in the same amount of in-game time.
Best time and conditions
Under normal conditions, Sturgeon in Stardew Valley only appear during Summer and Winter between 6am and 7pm.
Weather is not a requirement. You can catch them on sunny or rainy days. However, their relative spawn chance is highest during rainy Summer weather, when they can account for roughly 11% to 16% of items caught under suitable conditions.
Best season: Summer
Best weather: Rainy Summer day
Normal fishing window: 6am to 7pm
Magic Bait: Removes the normal season and time restrictions.
Using a Rain Totem in Winter does not give you the same advantage as Summer rain. In fact, Sturgeon are at their least common during rainy Winter conditions, so there is little reason to create Winter rain specifically for this fish.
Once you have Magic Bait, the restrictions become much less important because it allows fish to bite regardless of their normal season or time requirements.
Fishing difficulty and strategy
Sturgeon are among the more demanding non-legendary fish in Stardew Valley. They have a difficulty rating of 78 and use a mixed movement pattern, so expect sudden changes in direction during the fishing minigame.
The safest technique is to avoid aggressively chasing every movement. Keep the green fishing bar reasonably centred on the fish and use short, controlled inputs when it changes direction.
- Use short taps rather than long button presses when the fish is moving unpredictably.
- Avoid over-correcting when the Sturgeon suddenly changes direction.
- Anticipate its movement rather than constantly chasing the fish from one edge of the bar to the other.
- Increase your Fishing level before attempting repeated catches, because each Fishing level makes the green bar larger.
- Use tackle to compensate for the Sturgeon’s unpredictable movement.
If you lose one, do not panic. Sturgeon are difficult enough that failed catches are normal at low Fishing levels. Improving your Fishing skill often makes a bigger difference than simply making more attempts with weak equipment.
Best gear and buffs
Better gear makes catching Sturgeon in Stardew Valley much more manageable, but the different fishing rods do not all support the same equipment.
Fiberglass Rod: Supports bait, but not tackle. It is usable for Sturgeon, although it offers less help during the minigame.
Iridium Rod: Supports both bait and tackle, making it the best standard choice for Sturgeon.
Advanced Iridium Rod: The late-game option. It can equip two pieces of tackle simultaneously.
Trap Bobber: Slows the rate at which the catch meter falls while the fish is outside your fishing bar.
Cork Bobber: Adds 24 pixels to the fishing bar, making it easier to stay on the fish.
Deluxe Bait: Speeds up bites and also slightly increases the fishing bar size.
Training Rod: Do not use it. The Training Rod can only hook fish with a difficulty below 50, while Sturgeon have a difficulty of 78.
Best food buffs
Food that increases Fishing temporarily makes the fishing bar larger, so it can dramatically reduce the difficulty of landing a Sturgeon.
- Seafoam Pudding: +4 Fishing, making it one of the strongest standard fishing buffs.
- Lobster Bisque: +3 Fishing and a long-lasting buff.
- Dish o’ The Sea: +3 Fishing and another useful option if you have the ingredients available.
For most players, an Iridium Rod with a Trap Bobber plus a Fishing food buff is the easiest practical setup. A Cork Bobber is a good alternative if you prefer a larger fishing bar over slower progress loss.
Why Sturgeon is important
Sturgeon are useful in Stardew Valley for much more than filling out your Fish Collection.
A Sturgeon is required for the Lake Fish Bundle in the Community Center’s Fish Tank, alongside Largemouth Bass, Carp and Bullhead.
Sturgeon are also unique because their Roe can be placed inside a Preserves Jar to create Caviar. Other standard fish Roe becomes Aged Roe instead.
Sturgeon Roe base value: 130g
Caviar base value: 500g
Caviar with Artisan profession: 700g
Processing: Place Sturgeon Roe in a Preserves Jar.
Caviar is useful and valuable, but it is not one of the game’s highest-profit Artisan Goods. Its bigger importance is that Sturgeon are the only Fish Pond species whose Roe processes into Caviar, and Caviar is also one possible item for The Missing Bundle.
Sturgeon Fish Pond
Once you catch a Sturgeon, placing it in a Fish Pond on your farm gives you a renewable supply. Sturgeon reproduce every four days until they reach the pond’s current capacity.
Their pond output is exclusively Sturgeon Roe, and completing the pond quests eventually raises its capacity to ten fish. A high-population pond can regularly produce Roe for Caviar without requiring you to keep fishing for more Sturgeon.
Alternative ways to get Sturgeon
If the fishing minigame is giving you trouble, Stardew Valley provides a few alternative ways to obtain a Sturgeon.
- Krobus: A Sturgeon can randomly appear in his Wednesday shop stock for 200g.
- Traveling Cart: May randomly sell a Sturgeon for 600g to 1,000g.
- Pet cat: A cat at maximum friendship can occasionally give you a Sturgeon.
These methods depend on random availability, so catching one yourself at the Mountain Lake is still the most dependable approach if you need a Sturgeon for the Community Center.
Common mistakes
Most problems with catching Sturgeon in Stardew Valley come from fishing under the wrong conditions or using equipment that cannot handle the fish properly.
- Fishing outside Summer or Winter: Sturgeon will not naturally appear unless you use Magic Bait.
- Fishing after 7pm: The normal Sturgeon window ends at 7pm.
- Casting beside the shoreline: Their odds improve when the bobber lands at least three tiles from shore.
- Using the Training Rod: It cannot hook Sturgeon at all because their difficulty is above the rod’s limit.
- Expecting the Fiberglass Rod to use tackle: It accepts bait only. Upgrade to the Iridium Rod if you want a Trap Bobber or Cork Bobber.
- Assuming rain is required: Sturgeon can be caught in any weather during the correct season and time.
- Forcing Winter rain: Rainy Summer days improve the relative odds, while rainy Winter conditions actually make Sturgeon less common.
Best Sturgeon strategy
For the easiest Sturgeon catch in Stardew Valley, visit the Mountain Lake on a rainy Summer day between 6am and 7pm. Pick a position where your bobber can land at least three tiles away from shore.
Use an Iridium Rod with bait and a Trap Bobber, then eat Seafoam Pudding or another Fishing-boosting meal before you start. Higher Fishing skill means a larger catch bar, while the Trap Bobber gives you more time to recover when the Sturgeon suddenly moves away.
Once you catch your first one, decide whether you need it for the Lake Fish Bundle or want to start a Fish Pond. If you have enough Sturgeon later, turning their Roe into Caviar gives the fish a useful role long after the Community Center bundle is finished.
