To catch Walleye in Stardew Valley, fish in the Mountain Lake, Cindersap Forest Pond, or the rivers in Pelican Town and Cindersap Forest during Fall, while it is raining, between 12pm and 2am. The Cindersap Forest Pond is the best natural location, with particularly strong Walleye odds during rainy Fall weather.
Rain is normally mandatory. However, a Rain Totem can also make Walleye available during Winter, while Magic Bait ignores the usual season, weather and time restrictions entirely.

Core conditions
Under normal conditions, Walleye in Stardew Valley follow a strict combination of season, weather and time.
- Season: Fall
- Weather: Rain
- Time: 12pm to 2am
- Water: Certain freshwater rivers, lakes and ponds
If any of those normal requirements are missing, Walleye will not naturally appear. There are two important exceptions: using a Rain Totem during Winter, or fishing with Magic Bait.
Best Walleye locations
Walleye can appear in several freshwater areas in Stardew Valley, but the Cindersap Forest Pond is the strongest choice if your only goal is catching one.
During a rainy Fall day, each suitable cast in the Forest Pond has roughly a 32% chance of hooking a Walleye, making it considerably more reliable than simply fishing wherever you happen to be.
- Cindersap Forest Pond: Best overall natural location.
- Pelican Town river: A convenient alternative.
- Cindersap Forest river: Another valid river location.
- Mountain Lake: Walleye can also be caught here during the correct conditions.
- Riverland and Forest Farm: Walleye can appear in suitable farm water on these layouts.
The Beach does not contain Walleye, so ocean fishing is never the right choice unless you are using a completely different fishing mechanic or targeting another species.
Weather, Rain Totems, and Magic Bait
Rain is normally essential for catching Walleye in Stardew Valley. A sunny Fall day will not produce them through ordinary fishing.
Rain Totem
A Rain Totem lets you create rainy weather for the following day. More importantly, using one during Winter makes Walleye catchable despite Winter not normally being part of their season.
You still need to fish between 12pm and 2am in one of the normal Walleye locations.
Magic Bait
Magic Bait is the easiest way to ignore the calendar entirely. When it is equipped, fish can bite regardless of their normal season, weather or time requirements.
That means Walleye can be caught even on a sunny day or outside Fall when Magic Bait is being used in an appropriate fishing location.
Fishing strategy and difficulty
Walleye are considerably easier to land than Sturgeon, Catfish and many of the legendary fish in Stardew Valley.
They have a difficulty rating of 45 and use the game’s smooth movement behaviour. That means they generally move more predictably during the fishing minigame instead of constantly darting between the top and bottom of the bar.
- Use short, gentle inputs to follow the fish.
- Avoid over-correcting when it changes direction.
- Try to keep the fishing bar centred around the Walleye rather than chasing every small movement.
- Increase your Fishing level if you are struggling, as higher Fishing skill increases the size of the green fishing bar.
Because its difficulty is only 45, Walleye is not particularly useful as a dedicated Fishing skill grind. The biggest challenge is getting the correct weather and timing rather than winning the minigame itself.
Best gear and setup
You do not need high-end equipment to catch Walleye in Stardew Valley, but better gear lets you catch more fish during the limited rainy-day window.
Fiberglass Rod: Lets you use bait, which reduces the wait between bites.
Iridium Rod: Supports both bait and tackle, giving you more control over your setup.
Trap Bobber: Slows the rate at which the catch meter falls while the fish is outside the fishing bar.
Cork Bobber: Increases the size of the fishing bar, making catches easier.
Bait: Reduces the amount of time you wait for fish to bite, letting you make better use of a rainy afternoon.
An Iridium Rod with a Trap Bobber is a safe setup, but it is arguably overkill for Walleye. If your Fishing level is reasonable, a Fiberglass Rod with ordinary bait is usually enough.
The Cork Bobber does not increase fish quality by itself. Its advantage is simply the larger fishing bar, which makes completing the minigame easier.
Alternative ways to get Walleye
If the weather refuses to cooperate, Stardew Valley gives you several alternative ways to obtain a Walleye.
- Traveling Cart: Can randomly sell Walleye for 315g to 1,000g when it appears.
- Garbage Cans: Walleye can randomly appear in Garbage Cans during Fall and Winter.
- Pet cat: A cat at maximum friendship can occasionally give you a Walleye.
- Fish Pond: Once you already have a Walleye to place in a pond, the population can reproduce over time.
A Fish Pond is not really an alternative way to obtain your first Walleye, since you need one to stock it. It becomes useful once you already have the fish and want a renewable population.
What to use Walleye for
Walleye have several useful roles in Stardew Valley, particularly if you are completing the Community Center.
Community Center bundles
A Walleye is required for the standard Night Fishing Bundle in the Fish Tank, alongside Bream and Eel.
If you selected Remixed Bundles when creating the farm, Walleye can also appear as one of the possible fish associated with remixed bundle requirements. The exact bundle setup depends on the randomised selection used for that save.
Cooking
Walleye can be used as the generic fish ingredient in recipes such as Sashimi, Maki Roll and Quality Fertilizer. Those recipes do not specifically require Walleye, however, so using a cheaper or more common fish is usually more efficient.
Fish Pond
Walleye reproduce every three days in a Fish Pond. The initial capacity is three fish, and completing pond quests can eventually increase it to ten.
Their only pond output is yellow Walleye Roe, which can be processed in a Preserves Jar to make Aged Roe.
Common mistakes
Most failed Walleye attempts in Stardew Valley come from missing one of the fish’s spawn conditions rather than struggling with the fishing minigame.
- Fishing on a sunny day: Walleye normally require rain.
- Fishing before noon: Walleye do not begin appearing until 12pm.
- Stopping too early: Their window lasts all the way until 2am.
- Fishing in the ocean: Walleye are freshwater fish.
- Fishing outside Fall: Use a Winter Rain Totem or Magic Bait if you miss the normal season.
- Overthinking your equipment: Walleye are difficulty 45. You do not need expensive tackle just to catch one.
Best Walleye strategy
For the simplest Walleye catch in Stardew Valley, wait for a rainy Fall day and head to the Cindersap Forest Pond after noon. The pond offers the strongest natural odds, so you are less likely to spend the entire afternoon catching other fish.
Use bait to reduce waiting time and keep fishing until you land one. Since Walleye have smooth behaviour and only 45 difficulty, most players should not need specialised tackle once their Fishing skill has gained a few levels.
If Fall passes without enough rain, a Rain Totem gives you another opportunity during Winter. Later in the game, Magic Bait removes the scheduling problem almost completely.
Catch at least one for the Night Fishing Bundle if you are using the standard Community Center setup, and consider keeping another if you want to start a Walleye Fish Pond.
