Start with the KINGDOM HEARTS III Beginner’s Guide

KINGDOM HEARTS III is mechanically much easier to understand once you know what the game expects you to pay attention to. Sora can switch between multiple Keyblades, trigger Formchanges, use Shotlocks, chain aerial attacks, cook stat-boosting meals with Little Chef and constantly gain new abilities.

Our KINGDOM HEARTS III Beginner’s Guide is the best starting point if you have just reached Olympus or are returning after a long break.

Best for: first-time players who want to understand combat, exploration, equipment and progression before worrying about completionist objectives.

Every Keyblade has its own reason to exist

KINGDOM HEARTS III makes Keyblades much more mechanically distinct than simply giving Sora a new Strength or Magic number.

Different weapons introduce unique Formchanges, Shotlocks, abilities and combat styles. Some transform into guns, shields, staffs or massive melee weapons, while others specialize more heavily in physical or magical play.

Use our KINGDOM HEARTS III Keyblades Guide when you want to know which weapons exist, how they are unlocked and which ones make the most sense for the way you play.

Do not feel forced to use only your newest Keyblade

Because Keyblades can be upgraded, older weapons do not immediately become useless when the story gives you something new. A Formchange you enjoy can be more valuable than simply equipping whichever weapon has the highest unmodified stat number.

You can also equip three Keyblades simultaneously and switch between them during battle, so it makes sense to build a small loadout covering different situations instead of looking for one weapon that does everything.

Upgrade the Keyblades you actually use

Once you have found a few favorites, the next step is improving them at the Moogle Shop.

KINGDOM HEARTS III lets you invest synthesis materials into Keyblade upgrades, increasing their stats and improving their usefulness far beyond their starting values.

Our Keyblade Upgrades Guide explains how that progression works and what materials you should expect to collect.

Do not hoard every material forever: if a Keyblade is already central to your combat style, upgrading it can be more useful than waiting for a hypothetical later weapon.

Ultima Weapon is the big endgame crafting project

If your goal is to build Sora for the hardest fights in KINGDOM HEARTS III, Ultima Weapon is the obvious long-term target.

Getting it is deliberately more complicated than finding a chest. You need to progress through synthesis, obtain the Ultima Weapon recipe and gather rare materials, including Orichalcum+ collected through several different activities across the game.

Our KINGDOM HEARTS III Ultima Weapon Guide takes the entire process apart so you can work through the requirements without wondering which piece you missed.

Do you need Ultima Weapon to finish the story?

No. The main campaign can comfortably be completed without it. Ultima Weapon becomes much more attractive for completionists, Critical Mode runs and players moving into Re Mind’s hardest optional encounters.

Play Re Mind after finishing KINGDOM HEARTS III

Do not start Re Mind before completing the main KINGDOM HEARTS III story. Its central scenario revisits and expands the game’s climax, following Sora’s attempt to save Kairi after the final battle.

Our KINGDOM HEARTS III Re Mind Guide explains how the DLC is structured and what opens after its main scenario.

Re Mind is especially important because the DLC does much more than add another short story chapter. It also leads into the Limitcut Episode, where the game dramatically increases the difficulty with a series of high-level Organization XIII battles, followed by the Secret Episode.

Story players should not skip Re Mind: it expands the ending of KINGDOM HEARTS III and provides important context for Sora’s fate and the storyline leading toward Quadratum.

EZ Codes and PRO Codes can completely change the game

Re Mind also introduced the Premium Menu, one of the most flexible challenge systems in the series.

EZ Codes let you make the game dramatically easier or remove specific forms of friction. PRO Codes go in the opposite direction, adding restrictions designed for players who want KINGDOM HEARTS III to become significantly more punishing.

Our EZ Codes and PRO Codes Guide breaks down how both systems work and what the individual modifiers actually change.

Which should you use?

OptionBest for
Normal gameYour first playthrough and the intended base experience.
EZ CodesStory-focused runs, faster completion and experimenting with the game without normal difficulty restrictions.
PRO CodesExperienced players looking for self-imposed restrictions and a demanding challenge run.

What should you play before KINGDOM HEARTS III?

KINGDOM HEARTS III is numbered like a straightforward sequel, but jumping directly from KINGDOM HEARTS II into III leaves out several important chapters.

At minimum, Birth by Sleep, Dream Drop Distance, χ Back Cover and 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage- all establish characters, concepts or events that matter directly to the final phase of the Dark Seeker Saga.

If you are working through KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III], our Kingdom Hearts games in order guide gives you a complete route through the saga without spoiling major reveals by using a purely chronological order.

After KINGDOM HEARTS III, play Re Mind immediately. If you want to continue toward the next major arc, the wider story also includes Union χ, Dark Road and Melody of Memory. Our complete Kingdom Hearts story guide connects those threads with the rest of the timeline.

KINGDOM HEARTS III guide FAQ

Should I play Re Mind before finishing KINGDOM HEARTS III?

No. Finish the main KINGDOM HEARTS III story first. Re Mind revisits and expands the ending and is designed as post-game story content.

Do I need Ultima Weapon for Re Mind?

No, but it is one of the strongest tools available to Sora and is especially useful when tackling Re Mind’s harder optional encounters.

Can you upgrade every Keyblade?

KINGDOM HEARTS III allows you to strengthen Keyblades through the Moogle Shop using synthesis materials, which makes older weapons much more viable than they would be in earlier entries.

Are EZ Codes and PRO Codes part of the base game?

They are associated with the Premium Menu introduced alongside Re Mind and are intended to let players heavily customize difficulty in either direction.

Use this hub from Olympus to the Secret Episode

KINGDOM HEARTS III becomes much easier to navigate once its major systems are separated into manageable pieces.

Start with the beginner’s guide. Once Sora starts collecting more weapons, use the Keyblade guide and upgrade guide to build a loadout around your preferred combat style.

When completionist objectives start taking over, the Ultima Weapon guide handles the game’s biggest synthesis project. Finish the campaign, move into our Re Mind guide, and then use the EZ and PRO Codes guide when you are ready to bend the rules or make the game considerably nastier.
