Kingdom Hearts III gives Sora far more reasons to keep old Keyblades than the earlier games. Every weapon can be upgraded at the Keyblade Forge, each has its own abilities and Formchanges, and you can equip three at once and switch between them during combat. Most Keyblades come naturally from completing Disney worlds, but Ultima Weapon, Oathkeeper, Oblivion, Grand Chef and Classic Tone require considerably more work.

If you are reaching Kingdom Hearts III through the new KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III], there are also platform-specific bonus Keyblades to account for. Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo versions can start with different bonus weapons, so two players may not see exactly the same inventory.

Quick answer: Ultima Weapon is the strongest all-round endgame Keyblade. Oathkeeper and Oblivion are fantastic postgame alternatives with Light Form, Dark Form and Double Form. During the story, Wheel of Fate and Happy Gear are excellent physical options, while Ever After and Crystal Snow are particularly good for magic.

Every Kingdom Hearts III Keyblade and how to unlock it

For this guide, “every Keyblade” means the Keyblades Sora can actually equip. Story-only weapons wielded by Riku, Mickey, Aqua, Roxas and other characters are not part of Sora’s equipment menu.

Story Keyblades are almost impossible to miss

Most of Sora’s collection is handed to you automatically when you finish major worlds. You do not need to locate a chest or complete a hidden challenge for these.

Kingdom Key

Sora’s starting Keyblade is deliberately basic, but Kingdom Hearts III’s upgrade system means it never becomes completely obsolete. Its Second Form Formchange recreates several classic Sora techniques, making it particularly appealing if you prefer traditional Keyblade combat.

Hero’s Origin

Complete Olympus. Hero’s Origin favors physical power and transforms into the Counter Shield, letting Sora block attacks and convert that defense into powerful counters. It is one of the strongest early-game weapons for players who like aggressive melee combat without giving up defensive options.

Shooting Star

Complete Twilight Town. Shooting Star leans toward Magic and transforms first into Double Arrowguns and then the Magic Launcher, making it one of the earliest examples of how dramatically Formchanges can alter Sora’s fighting style.

Favorite Deputy

Complete Toy Box. It is a strong physical Keyblade with Hyper Hammer and Drill Punch Formchanges, but its most useful long-term feature may be Lucky Strike, which increases item drop rates. Keep it around when farming synthesis materials.

Ever After

Complete Kingdom of Corona. Ever After is one of the game’s strongest magic-focused story Keyblades and grants Leaf Bracer from the start. Its Mirage Staff Formchange gives Sora a very different ranged magical moveset.

Happy Gear

Complete Monstropolis. Happy Gear emphasizes Strength and can transform into Agile Claws and Twin Yo-Yos. If your build revolves around physical combos, it remains competitive for a surprisingly long time after you obtain it.

Crystal Snow

Complete Arendelle. Crystal Snow is another strong magic weapon, with Blizzard Claws and Blizzard Blades. It also carries Freeze Protection and eventually Blizzard Boost, making it particularly useful if you are leaning into elemental magic.

Hunny Spout

Complete 100 Acre Wood. It has balanced Strength and Magic and transforms into Hunny Blasters and Hunny Launcher. Its Harvester ability can also make ingredient gathering easier.

Wheel of Fate

Complete The Caribbean. Wheel of Fate is one of the best physical Keyblades obtainable through normal story progression, with Highwind and Storm Flag Formchanges and excellent Strength once upgraded.

Nano Gear

Complete San Fransokyo. Nano Gear is more balanced, comes with Stun Protection and transforms into Nano Arms. It is particularly comfortable for general exploration because it does not force Sora heavily toward either melee or magic.

Starlight

Starlight joins the inventory late in the campaign after defeating the Demon Tide in the Keyblade Graveyard. Earlier versions of Kingdom Hearts III also allowed players to obtain it through a Kingdom Hearts Union χ promotion, but normal modern playthroughs can simply earn it through the story.

Grand Chef and Classic Tone require side content

Grand Chef: get five stars at Le Grand Bistrot

Grand Chef is awarded when Le Grand Bistrot reaches a five-star rating. That means finding ingredients throughout the worlds and successfully cooking enough of Little Chef’s recipes.

It is worth the trouble for magic-heavy builds. Grand Chef has strong Magic, transforms into a giant Frying Pan and comes with Wizard’s Ruse, which can restore HP when Sora spends MP.

Classic Tone: master Classic Kingdom

Classic Tone is unlocked by meeting the score requirement in every Classic Kingdom minigame on the Gummiphone.

This is much more than a novelty reward. Fully upgraded, Classic Tone reaches extremely high Magic and can stack multiple instances of MP Haste, making it one of the best choices for spell-heavy builds even beside the endgame weapons.

How to unlock Ultima Weapon

Ultima Weapon is synthesized at a Moogle Shop. First, collect enough different synthesis materials to unlock its recipe. The recipe appears after obtaining 58 unique material types.

You then need:

  • 7 Orichalcum+
  • 2 Wellspring Crystals
  • 2 Lucid Crystals
  • 2 Pulsing Crystals

The crystals are relatively straightforward once you know which enemies and synthesis routes provide them. The real hunt is the seven Orichalcum+ pieces, which are tied to several different activities rather than being farmable from one enemy.

Once crafted, Ultima Weapon arrives at maximum Keyblade level and gives Sora access to Ultimate Form. It is the easiest recommendation for the best general-purpose weapon in the game because it combines huge Strength and Magic with an exceptionally powerful Formchange.

Worth the grind? Yes. Ultima Weapon is particularly valuable before Re Mind’s Limitcut superbosses, where both raw damage and the mobility of Ultimate Form become much more useful than they are against ordinary story enemies.

How to unlock Oathkeeper

Oathkeeper was added to Kingdom Hearts III through update 1.07 alongside Oblivion.

To unlock it:

  1. Photograph all 90 Lucky Emblems.
  2. Clear the main story.
  3. Receive the Proof of Promises.
  4. Visit a Moogle Shop and exchange the Proof for Oathkeeper.

Oathkeeper has balanced physical and magical performance and transforms Sora into Light Form. Building the Formchange again opens Double Form, where Sora dual-wields Oathkeeper and Oblivion.

The good news is that Oathkeeper does not require Critical Mode. If you want one of the two update Keyblades without replaying the entire game on its highest standard difficulty, this is the one to pursue.

How to unlock Oblivion

Oblivion has the more demanding unlock condition.

  1. Start or complete a playthrough on Critical Mode.
  2. Finish the main story on Critical.
  3. Receive the Proof of Times Past.
  4. Exchange it at a Moogle Shop for Oblivion.

Oblivion favors Strength more heavily than Oathkeeper and grants Dark Form, followed by its own version of Double Form.

If you are planning a Critical run anyway, it is an excellent endgame reward. If you only want to finish the story once on Standard or Proud, you do not need Oblivion to tackle normal postgame content.

Platform-exclusive Keyblades explained

Kingdom Hearts III has accumulated several bonus Keyblades across different releases. Most are themed variants rather than weapons that dramatically change the balance of the game.

This has become especially relevant with Collection [I–III], because the current versions include different platform-themed weapons.

KeybladePlatformAvailability
Midnight BluePlayStationPlatform bonus; included from the start in the PS5 Collection version
Phantom GreenXboxPlatform bonus; included from the start in the Xbox Series version
Dead of NightSteamIncluded with the Steam release
Long NightNintendo Switch 2Included from the start in the Switch 2 version
Elemental EncoderEpic Games StoreEpic Games Store version bonus
Advent RedOriginal Nintendo Switch cloud releaseSwitch cloud-version bonus
Dawn Till DuskLegacy PS4 / Xbox One releasesOriginally a preorder bonus and later released separately on supported storefronts

Do not worry about collecting every platform variant for combat purposes. They are primarily bonuses tied to specific releases and do not outperform Ultima Weapon, Oathkeeper or Oblivion in a way that makes another platform’s version necessary.

How Keyblade upgrades work

Unlike the first two numbered games, Kingdom Hearts III lets you strengthen Keyblades directly.

Open the Workshop at any Moogle Shop and enter the Keyblade Forge. Most Keyblades can eventually reach Level 10, increasing Strength and Magic while unlocking additional passive abilities at specific milestones.

Common upgrade materials include:

  • Fluorite for early upgrades
  • Damascus for mid-level upgrades
  • Adamantite for higher levels
  • Electrum for the final upgrade

Because upgrades substantially improve older weapons, you do not need to replace a favorite Keyblade every time the story gives you another one. Favorite Deputy, Ever After and the Kingdom Key can remain useful considerably longer than their original stats suggest.

A good three-Keyblade setup

Remember that Kingdom Hearts III allows Sora to equip three Keyblades simultaneously and switch between them in combat. There is little reason to think in terms of one permanent “best weapon.”

A useful late-game setup could be:

  • Ultima Weapon for raw all-purpose combat
  • Classic Tone or Oathkeeper for magic
  • Favorite Deputy for Lucky Strike while farming

For Limitcut or other difficult bosses, you can replace the farming weapon with Oathkeeper or Oblivion and use Formchanges much more aggressively.

Do Keyblades carry into New Game Plus?

Yes. Kingdom Hearts III’s New Game Plus lets you transfer obtained Keyblades into a new playthrough.

There is one important limitation: transferred Keyblades return to Level 0. You keep access to the weapon itself but need to upgrade it again through the Keyblade Forge.

Proof of Promises and Proof of Times Past can also carry into New Game Plus, making it possible to bring Oathkeeper and Oblivion into a fresh run after meeting their original conditions.

Kingdom Hearts III Keyblades FAQ

What is the best Keyblade in Kingdom Hearts III?

Ultima Weapon is the strongest general-purpose choice. It combines excellent Strength and Magic with Ultimate Form, one of Sora’s most powerful Formchanges.

Can you get Oathkeeper without Critical Mode?

Yes. Oathkeeper requires all 90 Lucky Emblems and a cleared game file. Critical Mode is only required for Oblivion.

Can you miss a story Keyblade?

No. Keyblades tied to completing major worlds are awarded automatically. Optional weapons such as Grand Chef, Classic Tone and Ultima Weapon can be earned later.

Do I need every platform-exclusive Keyblade?

No. Platform bonus Keyblades are primarily collectible variants. You do not need them to complete the game, craft Ultima Weapon or build a top-tier endgame loadout.

You do not need to abandon your favorite Keyblade

Kingdom Hearts III’s Keyblade system is much more flexible than the simple stat ladder of the original game. Formchanges, passive abilities and the Keyblade Forge mean that obtaining a newer weapon does not automatically make everything before it useless.

Use the world Keyblades while progressing through the campaign, keep Favorite Deputy available for material farming, and pursue Grand Chef or Classic Tone if their specialties fit your build. Once you move into postgame content, Ultima Weapon, Oathkeeper and Oblivion give Sora the full endgame arsenal.
