You should start KINGDOM HEARTS III Re Mind only after finishing the main story of KINGDOM HEARTS III. In fact, the DLC is designed around a completed save file and directly revisits the game’s ending from a new perspective. You do not need to grind Sora to Level 99 before starting Re Mind itself. If your character was strong enough to comfortably finish the final battles of KHIII, that same save is generally ready for the Re Mind scenario. Level 99 becomes much more important later, when Re Mind unlocks the brutally difficult Limitcut and Secret Episodes.
If you are playing through the newly released KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III], Re Mind is already part of the KINGDOM HEARTS III package. It should be treated as the next story chapter after the KHIII credits, not as something to jump into during the campaign.
Quick recommendation: finish KINGDOM HEARTS III, start Re Mind with your normal clear save, and do not grind to Level 99 unless you are preparing for Limitcut. For Limitcut and the Secret Episode, Level 99 is strongly recommended, especially on Proud or Critical Mode.

When should you start Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind?
Start Re Mind immediately after finishing the main story of KINGDOM HEARTS III.
Square Enix describes Re Mind specifically as an additional episode for players who have completed KHIII. The story follows Sora after the events surrounding the final battle as he attempts to rescue Kairi, sending him back through the Keyblade Graveyard and into the hearts of the seven guardians of light.
This means Re Mind assumes you already know exactly what happened during KHIII’s ending. It does not simply add a new unrelated adventure after the credits. Large parts of the scenario revisit the climax from perspectives Sora could not originally see, while also adding new playable characters, battles, scenes and explanations.
There is therefore no benefit to trying to squeeze Re Mind into the middle of the base game. Finish KHIII first.
What level should Sora be for Re Mind?
There is no official Square Enix recommended level for Re Mind. The most useful rule is simpler: if the save was strong enough to defeat the final boss of KINGDOM HEARTS III, it is strong enough to begin the main Re Mind scenario.
The exact number matters less than your difficulty setting, equipment and understanding of KHIII’s defensive mechanics. Skilled players can clear even the hardest Re Mind content at extremely low levels, but that is a challenge run rather than a useful recommendation for somebody simply trying to finish the DLC.
Do not grind to 99 before Re Mind just because you have heard the DLC is difficult. Most of that reputation comes from Limitcut and the Secret Episode. The main Re Mind story is far more approachable.
Re Mind, Limitcut and Secret Episode are three different stages
A lot of the confusion around Re Mind comes from people using the DLC name to describe everything it contains.
In practice, you are dealing with three progressively harder pieces of content.
Square Enix officially lists all three as part of Re Mind, alongside Data Greeting, slideshow features and the Premium Menu.
How Re Mind save files work
Re Mind uses your completed KINGDOM HEARTS III save data. Once you have cleared the base game, you can begin the additional scenario from the DLC section of the title menu and choose the completed file you want to carry forward.
Your version of Sora carries over, including his level, equipment, Keyblades, items and abilities.
Keep your original clear save
Do yourself a favor and keep a separate copy of the KHIII clear data instead of repeatedly overwriting the same slot.
The DLC lets you move between its progression and the main game data, which is especially useful once you reach Limitcut and realize you want to go back for better equipment, synthesis materials, levels or items.
After completing Re Mind, create the new clear data when prompted. That file is what opens the Limitcut Episode.
What should you do before starting Re Mind?
For the story portion? Not much.
You absolutely do not need 100% completion, every Lucky Emblem, Ultima Weapon or Level 99 before entering Re Mind.
A sensible preparation list looks more like this:
- Finish the KHIII story and create clear data.
- Equip your preferred Keyblades and upgrade them if you have the materials.
- Equip useful defensive abilities, particularly Guard, Dodge Roll, Air Slide and your preferred reprisals.
- Carry healing items instead of leaving Sora’s item slots empty.
- Use food bonuses if you want an inexpensive stat boost.
- Save the serious post-game grind for Limitcut.
If you are playing the entire franchise for the first time, also make sure you arrived at KHIII through the right story path. Our Kingdom Hearts games in order guide explains why Re Mind belongs immediately after KHIII rather than somewhere later in the timeline.
Limitcut is where Level 99 starts making sense
Then Re Mind takes the gloves off.
Completing the main Re Mind scenario unlocks the Limitcut Episode, which includes thirteen Data battles against members of the real Organization XIII.
These are not slightly stronger versions of the story bosses. Their attack patterns, openings, desperation moves and defensive requirements are built as endgame challenges. Button mashing that worked during parts of the main campaign will get Sora demolished very quickly.

Recommended Limitcut preparation
- Level 99 if you want every reasonable statistical advantage.
- A fully upgraded strong Keyblade. Ultima Weapon is excellent but not mandatory.
- Kupo Coin for an extra safety net where available.
- Elixirs or other high-level healing items.
- Good accessories and armor rather than whatever happened to be equipped during the story.
- Useful food bonuses.
- Patience. Learning the bosses matters considerably more than another few points of Strength.
Level 99 does not trivialize these fights. Even a max-level Sora can lose extremely quickly if you do not recognize a boss’s patterns.
Think of Level 99 as removing unnecessary statistical disadvantages so you can concentrate on learning the actual fight.
When should you attempt the Secret Episode?
After defeating all thirteen Limitcut Data bosses, the Secret Episode becomes available.
This culminates in the fight against Yozora, widely regarded as the ultimate combat challenge in KINGDOM HEARTS III.
This is where Level 99 should be your default assumption unless you deliberately want a challenge run.
Yozora can punish healing, steal resources, alter Sora’s situation mid-fight and chain together attacks that require precise blocking, dodging and recognition. Raw stats help you survive mistakes, but they do not replace knowing the encounter.
Good progression: finish KHIII → play Re Mind at your natural level → level and gear up → clear the 13 Limitcut bosses → fight the Secret Episode boss.
Where does Re Mind fit in the Kingdom Hearts story?
Re Mind technically revisits events that overlap the climax of KHIII, but you should experience it after the base game’s ending.
Its purpose is to show what Sora was doing while tracing the hearts of the guardians, explain previously unseen moments around the final battle and continue his attempt to bring Kairi back.
Limitcut then moves the timeline forward, following the search for Sora after his disappearance. The Secret Episode pushes that mystery even further.
That makes Re Mind important if you intend to understand the road toward Quadratum and KINGDOM HEARTS IV. Our complete Kingdom Hearts story guide covers what happens afterward, but naturally contains major spoilers.

KINGDOM HEARTS III Re Mind FAQ
Can I start Re Mind before finishing KINGDOM HEARTS III?
No. Re Mind is post-game content built around a completed KHIII save and directly spoils and expands the game’s ending.
Do I need to be Level 99 for Re Mind?
No. Use the level at which you completed the KHIII story. Level 99 is mainly recommended for the much harder Limitcut and Secret Episode content.
Do I need Ultima Weapon before starting Re Mind?
No. A strong upgraded Keyblade is enough for the story scenario. Ultima Weapon becomes much more useful when preparing for Limitcut, although even there it is not strictly required.
Is Re Mind important for the story?
Yes. It expands KHIII’s ending, explains Sora’s attempt to rescue Kairi and continues into events directly connected with his disappearance and the mystery surrounding Quadratum.
Play Re Mind now, grind later
The easiest mistake to make with Re Mind is hearing about its infamous superbosses and assuming the entire DLC requires a maxed-out character.
It does not.
Finish KINGDOM HEARTS III, carry your clear save directly into the Re Mind scenario and enjoy the story continuation. Once the credits roll again and Limitcut appears, that is your signal to start taking post-game preparation seriously.
Get Sora to Level 99, improve your equipment, stock your inventory and learn how to defend properly. The Data Organization and Yozora are not tests of whether you can grind enough levels. They are tests of whether you actually learned how KINGDOM HEARTS III’s combat works.
