S-GAME spent years showing Phantom Blade Zero through carefully choreographed demos, boss fights, and trailers. The finished game finally answers the big question behind all of that footage: yes, the fighting really is the centerpiece.

This is a fast action RPG built around aggressive attacks, parries, dodges, weapon switching, boss encounters, exploration, and a huge arsenal rather than a conventional Soulslike built around slow attrition. The critical response has been particularly enthusiastic about combat, boss design, animation, weapon variety, and the game’s distinctive kungfupunk art direction, while the story and some technical rough edges have been more divisive.

Is Phantom Blade Zero out now?

Yes. Phantom Blade Zero launched worldwide on October 29, 2026 for Windows PC and PlayStation 5. Because S-GAME used a synchronized global unlock, Steam and some regional storefronts may display October 28 instead.

On PC, the game is available through Steam and the Epic Games Store. PlayStation 5 players can buy the digital version now, while S-GAME has also announced physical PS5 editions for 2027.

No Xbox Series X|S or Nintendo Switch version has been announced as of launch.

What is Phantom Blade Zero?

Phantom Blade Zero is a single-player third-person action RPG from S-GAME built around wuxia martial arts, dark fantasy, folk horror, strange machinery, and fast cinematic sword fighting.

The studio calls the result kungfupunk. Traditional martial-arts imagery sits beside mechanical prosthetics, industrial structures, supernatural corruption, monsters, elaborate weapons, and technology that deliberately does not belong to one clean historical period.

Calling it a Soulslike gets part of the idea across, but not the whole thing. There are difficult bosses, checkpoints, parries, exploration, and dangerous enemies, but the finished game moves much faster. It also includes several difficulty settings, generous build respec options, boss-phase checkpoints, and other systems that make the overall rhythm closer to an aggressive character-action RPG.

Enter the Wulin: Gameplay & Story Deep Dive of Phantom Blade Zero

Phantom Blade Zero story and the kungfupunk world

The protagonist is Soul, a warrior who is framed for the murder of his master and suffers a devastating injury to his heart. His life is temporarily saved, but the solution leaves him with only 66 days to live.

That leaves Soul hunted by former allies while he tries to uncover the conspiracy surrounding the murder, understand what happened to him, and work out who he can still trust.

The Wulin around him is not a single giant open-world map. Phantom Blade Zero uses interconnected handcrafted regions with side paths, settlements, hidden areas, optional encounters, environmental barriers, and reasons to return after acquiring new tools.

This matters because exploration is not simply there to pad the route between boss fights. Optional paths can lead to weapons, upgrades, Memory Flowers, quests, hidden bosses, and information that changes how you understand characters or events.

Combat, Sha-Chi, weapons and Phantom Edges

Combat is where Phantom Blade Zero makes its strongest case for itself. Soul moves quickly between attacking, blocking, parrying, dodging, switching weapons, breaking defenses, and using powerful special attacks.

How Sha-Chi works

The main combat resource is Sha-Chi. Blocking incoming attacks drains Soul’s Sha-Chi, and running out can leave him staggered and exposed. Perfect defense and successful attacks put the same pressure on an opponent’s Sha-Chi, eventually creating an opening.

Weapon switching is part of that rhythm rather than a menu-level decision. Soul can carry two primary weapons, and swapping between them helps restore Sha-Chi while letting you continue a sequence with a different moveset.

Landing attacks also builds Sha-Chi Essence, which can be spent on stronger Power Surge attacks designed to interrupt enemies and punch through pressure.

More than 30 primary weapons

S-GAME says the finished game contains more than 30 primary weapons. The important bit is that they are not simply different stat sticks. Different weapons can change combos, attack range, status effects, special moves, and how aggressively you can pressure an enemy.

Many are earned by defeating the enemies and bosses that use them. That creates a satisfying loop: survive a weapon when it is being used against you, claim it, then work out how to make the same tricks somebody else’s problem.

25 Phantom Edges

Soul also has access to 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. These are stranger tools with limited uses and more specialized functions, including ranged attacks, summons, mobility, or abilities that can interact with the environment.

That last part matters outside combat. Some Phantom Edges can open paths that were previously blocked, giving exploration a light ability-gating element and making backtracking worthwhile.

Changing builds is deliberately painless

One of the friendlier decisions is the ability to recover upgrade materials from a weapon and reinvest them elsewhere. If a new blade or build suddenly looks more interesting, you do not have to accept that the materials spent on your old favorite are gone forever.

Bosses, difficulty and 66 Days mode

Boss fights are a major part of Phantom Blade Zero’s identity. They range from martial artists and assassins to much stranger figures shaped by the world’s supernatural and mechanical side.

The best encounters are designed as more than enormous health bars. Bosses can force you to adapt to unusual weapons, unblockable moves, projectiles, environmental hazards, multiple phases, and attack strings that demand a different balance between offense and defense.

Difficulty is adjustable rather than fixed. The available options include Wayfarer, Pathbreaker, Hellwalker, and 66 Days mode. Wayfarer is aimed at players who mainly want the story, while Hellwalker pushes enemy behavior further for experienced action-game players.

What is 66 Days mode?

66 Days is the extreme end of the challenge spectrum. It is meant for players who already understand Phantom Blade Zero’s combat and want a harsher test rather than simply a first playthrough with slightly larger enemy health bars.

For most players, choosing a normal campaign difficulty first makes more sense. The combat system has enough moving parts that learning when to parry, dodge, swap weapons, attack Sha-Chi, and use Phantom Edges matters more than immediately choosing the most punishing option.

Exploration, side quests and endings

Phantom Blade Zero’s world is structured around connected regions rather than one enormous open map. That lets S-GAME fill areas with side routes, optional bosses, quest steps, environmental secrets, collectibles, and places you may only be able to reach after acquiring the right tool.

Side quests are more important than simple errands. S-GAME has confirmed that helping people in the Wulin can open additional story paths and reveal more about the wider conspiracy.

Memory Flowers and other collectibles

Blue Memory Flowers are one of the more important things to watch for. They reveal fragments of the past, flesh out local stories, and can increase Soul’s health after completing the relevant memory set.

There are many other collectibles, upgrade resources, secrets, and optional encounters scattered throughout the game, making a 100% run considerably larger than simply reaching the credits.

Does Phantom Blade Zero have multiple endings?

Yes. The campaign includes different ending outcomes, and optional content can matter if you want to see more than the most straightforward conclusion. Some of the relevant requirements involve difficult hidden encounters, so completion-focused players should be careful about missable content and major progression points.

If you only want to experience the story naturally, going in without an ending checklist is completely reasonable. If you are aiming for the true ending or 100% completion, this is the sort of game where tracking side content becomes much more important.

Phantom Blade Zero reviews and playtime

The launch reviews are strongly positive overall. An early Metacritic snapshot after the first major review wave placed the PC version at 89 and the PlayStation 5 version at 88.

The clearest consensus is around combat. Reviewers repeatedly praise its speed, weapon variety, boss choreography, parrying, animation, and ability to move smoothly between attacking and defending. Art direction and exploration also receive strong praise.

The biggest disagreement is everything around that combat. Storytelling is the most common criticism, particularly the timeline, exposition, terminology, and frequent flashbacks. Performance and polish also vary between reviews, with some critics reporting smooth play and others encountering frame-rate drops, audio problems, or smaller bugs in pre-release builds.

How long is Phantom Blade Zero?

Game director Soulframe Liang estimated around 25 to 30 hours for an experienced player completing a full walkthrough without spending too long on bosses. Review playthroughs broadly support that estimate, with main-story runs often landing around 25 to 35 hours.

A more thorough run involving optional quests, weapons, bosses, upgrades, and collectibles can move closer to the 45-hour range.

Phantom Blade Zero PC requirements

The PC version supports a wide range of hardware, but S-GAME requires an SSD and uses upscaling in its published performance targets.

Phantom Blade Zero editions and preorder bonus history

Now that Phantom Blade Zero has launched, there is no reason to frame this section as a preorder decision. The useful question is what each edition includes.

EditionUS list priceIncludes
Standard Edition$59.99Full game
Digital Deluxe Edition$69.99Full game, Wulin Legend outfit, Blood-Steel Form outfit, digital artbook, digital soundtrack

What were the preorder bonuses?

Preorders included early access to the Treasure Basin accessory, which increases Remnant Dust drops by 10%, and the Legacy outfit.

Importantly, neither item is permanently locked behind the preorder window. S-GAME says both can also be obtained through normal in-game progression.

Launch-period marketplace note: A Phantom Blade Zero pre-purchase offer is still listed on G2A.COM at the time of this update. Because the game has already reached its launch window, read the item page carefully before buying and confirm exactly what the offer includes and whether any time-sensitive bonus still applies to you. The Wulin is open

Phantom Blade Zero no longer has to survive on spectacular trailers and carefully selected demos. The finished game is here, and its strongest idea survived the transition: fighting looks like choreographed wuxia cinema without giving up the mechanical depth needed to make those battles satisfying to play.

The story may not land as cleanly as the combat, and anyone chasing every collectible or ending has a much bigger job ahead than simply reaching the credits. But with dozens of weapons, Phantom Edges, optional bosses, connected regions, build experimentation, multiple difficulty levels, and a large completion layer, there is plenty here for this page to grow into a proper Phantom Blade Zero guide hub.

If you are still deciding whether to jump in, the next useful stop is our full review roundup. If the decision is already made, compare the current buying options before heading into the Wulin.
