Pokemon Pokopia Free Onix Guide

Onix in Pokemon Pokopia is exactly how we remember it from the classic, original Pokemon TV series and games – a big, rocky creature that looks like an enormous earthworm made of stone.

You’ll meet Onix relatively early in the game, and it will be crying for help. Apparently, it got stuck in a cave and can’t get out. Since you’re here, why don’t you try giving it a helping hand? Perhaps there’s a nice reward waiting for kind-hearted players!

But solving this quest on your own can be a bit tricky. If you’re not sure how to complete this task, we’ll give you a step-by-step tutorial on how to finish it easily.

Read on to learn how to free Onix from its predicament in Pokemon Pokopia!

Pokemon Pokopia – Learning Rock Smash to Free Onix

Onix can be found stuck in a cave, but before you go there, you’ll need to learn how to break walls by obtaining a Rock Smash skill.

You can learn Rock Smash from Hitmonchan once it visits your Exercise Resting Spot habitat. If you’re not sure how to make it, ask Squirtle for hints (you’ll need to place a punching bag next to a seat).

Hitmonchan can take a bit longer than usual to spawn, so feel free to focus on your other tasks for a while and return to the habitat later.

Onix Cave Location in Pokemon Pokopia

You’ll meet Onix once you break the stones on the western side of Withered Wasteland, revealing a vast sea. The cave will be on the right side. To make sure it’s the correct place, locate a collectible with a red marker near the entrance to the cave – it should contain a vine rope.

If you keep heading north from there, you’ll eventually find a gate that leads to another location, Rocky Ridges. Don’t go there, though; instead, enter the tunnel to the right (east) of the gate. You’ll know it’s the one if you can see a collectible here, a slender candle.

Pick up the candle and look around; you should see a pile of light brown rocks on the left side of the tunnel – that’s where Onix is hiding. As you get closer, you might hear it crying for help.

Sometimes it doesn’t trigger, though, in which case you’re perhaps behind on some quests. It doesn’t matter, just dig through the pile, and you’ll meet the iconic, rocky Pokemon. If it’s not here, focus on doing your other quests first and return here later.

Pokemon Pokopia – Onix Cave Rescue Mission

Once you meet Onix, it will tell you it’s stuck in here and will ask for your assistance. Apparently, the rocks here are too much to handle, even for the mighty Onix, so you’ll have to find a way to deal with the problem yourself.

Unfortunately, your Rock Smash won’t work here – a cleverer approach is necessary.

Before you leave, Onix will suggest asking around – perhaps one of your friends will know what to do.

Go back and visit Professor Tangrowth. It will trigger a new mission – Professor wants you to get it to the other side of the stone wall. Once you both cross the passage, the Professor will notice a suspicious building with a strange device.

After investigating it, you’ll learn about the Team Initiation Challenge; you can leave it for later, though – it’s not necessary for the Onix rescue mission.

You’ll share the news about Onix with the Professor, and it will suggest returning and discussing this with the others. After brainstorming during Professor Tangrowth questline, you’ll come to the conclusion that the best solution would be to spray the rocks with water to make them softer.

To make it work, though, you’ll need a lot of water, and that means you’ll ideally need rain. But the place you’re in is dry as a bone – the only way to make it rain here is to find Slowpoke.

How to Summon Slowpoke in Pokemon Pokopia Quest

To summon Slowpoke, you’ll need a Seaside Tall Grass habitat. You’ll learn how to make it during the quest.

Head back to the sea, make the habitat, and Slowpoke should visit soon.

But to make it rain, there’s more work to be done.

First, you’ll have to build a path for Slowpoke, so it can get to the Professor. Place some wooden steps so Slowpoke can move up and down the elevated blocks. You’ll also have to water the dry ground.

After finally reaching Professor, you’ll realize that to make it rain, Slowpoke needs to make a yawn. But a really big, sleepy yawn – and for that you’ll need to increase the humidity level.

Pokemon Pokopia Rain Puzzle Solution – Raising Humidity Level

The humidity environmental system in Pokemon Pokopia controls the humidity level in the current area. To increase it, you can do the following:

  • Water plants and trees in the area using Water Gun
  • Break the leaking rocks with Rock Smash to let the water flow
  • Place additional fountains in the water
  • Create water-related habitats, such as Hydrated Tall Grass and Rain Dance site

You should also complete Pokemon requests related to this task – you’ll find them under the “Yawn up a Storm!” quest entry. Make sure there’s a checkmark next to each request.

To check the current humidity level, refer to the “yawn score” in the game; the bigger, the better. Your goal is to get it all the way up to 100 points.

After exhausting all options for increasing the humidity level, you’ll finally be able to use Slowpoke Rain ability to soften the rocks. Unfortunately, the summoned rain stops quickly and you’ll have to find a way to extend it.

Head back to the beach where you’ll now find Kyogre. Ask it for help and it will make a bigger rain, allowing you to finally free Onix from the cave.

After triggering Kyogre rain event, return to Onix and break the rocks – your Rock Smash skill will be sufficient now.
