For most players, killing Xanthe is the better choice in The Blood of Dawnwalker.
You can drink her blood to unlock the powerful Blood Surge ability and permanently stop the murders she commits to keep Chariklea alive. The downside is a tougher Griefberg Castle sequence later, because Xanthe will not be there to remove some of the Blood Guard pressure and you will have to deal with her nightmare trap.
Spare Xanthe if you value an easier final assault more than the extra vampiric ability. Kill her if you want the stronger reward and the cleaner moral outcome.
Spoiler warning: This guide explains the outcome of The Cycle of Love, Xanthe’s boss fight, Chariklea’s fate, Blood Surge, and later consequences during the Griefberg Castle assault.
TL;DR – Should you kill or spare Xanthe?
Table of Contents
Who is Xanthe in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
Xanthe is one of Brencis’ most powerful Vrakhiri boyars and controls the southeastern part of Vale Sangora.
She is older than Brencis himself and uses supernatural experiments to strengthen his forces, including the Blood Guard.
Her personal Court Activity, The Cycle of Love, reveals a much more disturbing reason behind some of those experiments.
Xanthe has been kidnapping and killing women in an attempt to keep her daughter Chariklea alive. Chariklea’s body has been reconstructed using body parts taken from Xanthe’s victims, while dark magic prevents her from dying naturally.

That context is important because the final choice is not simply about whether Coen forgives an enemy. Sparing Xanthe also means allowing the system she created around Chariklea to continue.
What happens if you spare Xanthe?
If you accept Xanthe’s offer after defeating her, she survives and becomes a temporary ally.
The biggest benefit comes much later during the assault on Griefberg Castle. Xanthe helps remove part of the supernatural resistance that would otherwise slow Coen down, including Blood Guard enemies tied to her influence.
You also avoid the special nightmare sequence she leaves behind if she dies or is rejected.
Best reason to spare Xanthe: you want the smoothest possible path through the final castle assault.
There is a significant cost, though. Xanthe’s survival means her work involving Chariklea can continue. The game makes it clear that maintaining Chariklea’s unnatural existence requires more victims.
You also give up the immediate opportunity to drink Xanthe’s blood after this encounter and unlock Blood Surge through her.
What happens if you kill Xanthe?
If you reject Xanthe and finish her off, you can drain her Vrakhiri blood.
This unlocks Blood Surge, one of the unique vampiric abilities associated with drinking the blood of major Vrakhiri.
Killing her also ends the kidnappings and body harvesting connected to Chariklea.

The trade-off appears during the Griefberg Castle assault. Without Xanthe’s cooperation, her supernatural forces remain part of the problem and Coen must also deal with the trap she leaves behind.
Importantly, you do not fight Xanthe again. Her death makes the route harder because of what she leaves behind, not because she somehow returns as another boss.
Is Blood Surge worth getting?
Yes, especially if you regularly use Vampirism abilities.
Blood Surge is unlocked by drinking Xanthe’s Vrakhiri blood. It gives Coen another offensive vampiric option and is one of the unique powers that cannot simply be purchased with ordinary Skill Points.
Vrakhiri blood is valuable because these abilities sit outside the normal Swordmastery and Witchcraft progression loop. Drinking blood from major vampires such as Xanthe is therefore more than an extra stat reward.
It expands your actual combat toolkit.
Gameplay recommendation: if you are building heavily around Coen’s nighttime Vampirism tree, Blood Surge makes killing Xanthe considerably more attractive.

Should you kill or spare Xanthe?
Our recommendation is to kill Xanthe.
There are three reasons.
- You get Blood Surge. This is a permanent gameplay reward rather than temporary help during one late-game sequence.
- You stop her killings. Xanthe’s attempt to preserve Chariklea depends on sacrificing other women.
- The harder final sequence is manageable. Xanthe’s absence adds enemies and a trap, but it does not fundamentally block progression.
Sparing her is still a valid strategic choice if your main priority is making the Griefberg Castle assault easier.
What should you do with Chariklea?
If Xanthe dies, Coen is left to deal with Chariklea.
The game allows you to decide whether to leave her where she is or end her life as an act of mercy.
There is no clean rescue option that restores Chariklea to a normal life. Xanthe’s magic and experiments have kept her in an unnatural condition for far too long.
The choice is therefore primarily a role-playing decision rather than a way to unlock a superior combat reward.
You can still investigate Chariklea’s room and collect the available loot associated with the area regardless of how you interpret the final decision.

Does killing Xanthe make Griefberg Castle harder?
Yes.
If Xanthe is dead or you refuse her cooperation, the final assault includes additional supernatural resistance and her special nightmare trap.
The trap sends Coen through a looping maze where simply choosing random doors can keep you stuck.
The key visual clue is a downward-pointing triangular banner marked with a tentacled eye symbol. Follow the doors associated with that symbol, look for the hidden routes that open as you progress, and repeat the sequence until you escape.
If Xanthe is alive and allied with Coen, this entire complication is removed.
So is sparing her worth it just for the finale? Only if you want maximum convenience. The extra castle sequence is more work, but Blood Surge remains useful long after The Cycle of Love is finished.
Quick tips for beating Xanthe
Before you can make the decision, you still have to defeat her.
Xanthe fights more like a powerful supernatural caster than a conventional sword enemy.
- Watch the ground. Move out of marked areas before her magical attacks trigger.
- Block her blood tendrils directionally. They can attack from the left, right, or above.
- Use Perfect Blocks. They create better openings against her pressure.
- Destroy the blood orbs quickly. Leaving them active allows Xanthe to recover health.
- Do not tunnel on her health bar. When the fight introduces a secondary mechanic, deal with it before returning to damage.
If the directional combat is giving you trouble, our Dawnwalker difficulty settings guide explains how Action Difficulty changes aggression, reaction windows, and defensive timing.

The Blood of Dawnwalker Xanthe choice FAQ
Should you kill or spare Xanthe?
For most players, killing Xanthe is the better choice. It allows Coen to drink her blood and unlock Blood Surge while permanently ending the killings tied to Chariklea.
What happens if you spare Xanthe?
Xanthe survives and helps during the Griefberg Castle assault, removing part of the Blood Guard and supernatural resistance associated with her route.
Do you get Blood Surge if you spare Xanthe?
Not from this encounter. Blood Surge is obtained by drinking Xanthe’s Vrakhiri blood after killing her.
Does killing Xanthe make the final battle harder?
Yes. Her forces remain an obstacle and Coen must complete Xanthe’s nightmare trap during the castle assault.
Do you fight Xanthe again if you kill her?
No. The later penalty is her trap and additional enemies, not another Xanthe boss fight.
Can you save Chariklea?
There is no straightforward cure that returns Chariklea to a normal life. If Xanthe dies, you can leave Chariklea or choose to end her suffering.
Does the Xanthe choice change the ending?
It changes the structure of the Griefberg Castle assault and contributes to the wider consequences of your Court choices, but the kill-or-spare decision by itself is not a simple switch for one exclusive ending.
Is Xanthe’s quest worth doing?
Yes. The Cycle of Love provides major story context, a boss encounter, useful rewards, and one of the most significant Court decisions in the game.
A harder castle is worth a stronger Coen
Xanthe offers a tempting bargain because her help has a clear practical benefit. Let her live and one part of the final assault becomes easier.
The problem is everything that comes with that convenience.
Blood Surge is a permanent reward, while Xanthe’s assistance is temporary. Killing her also closes the door on the murders used to sustain Chariklea’s unnatural existence.
So unless you specifically want to minimize resistance during the Griefberg Castle assault, kill Xanthe, drink her blood, and accept the harder route later.
Vale Sangora gives Coen plenty of reasons to compromise. This is one of the few times when refusing the deal also gives you the better toy.
