If you want to befriend or romance Shane in Stardew Valley, his best gifts are Beer, Hot Pepper, Pepper Poppers, Pizza, and the game’s Universal Loves. His birthday is Spring 20, so giving him a loved gift that day applies the 8× birthday multiplier.
Shane lives at Marnie’s Ranch, works at JojaMart until it closes, and spends many evenings at the Stardrop Saloon. His storyline deals with depression, alcohol misuse, counselling, family, and eventually his interest in raising chickens, including the blue chickens you can unlock through his eight-heart event.
Shane gift guide
Giving gifts is one of the fastest ways to raise friendship with Shane in Stardew Valley. You can normally give him up to two gifts each week, plus an additional gift on his birthday even if you have already reached that weekly limit.
A loved gift normally gives 80 friendship points and a liked gift gives 45. On Spring 20, the birthday multiplier increases a normal-quality loved gift to 640 friendship points.
Birthday: Spring 20
Loved gift: +80 friendship before multipliers
Liked gift: +45 friendship before multipliers
Birthday multiplier: 8×

Shane’s loved gifts
Shane has four personal loved gifts in Stardew Valley, alongside Universal Loves.
Beer: Can be bought from the Stardrop Saloon or brewed from Wheat in a Keg.
Hot Pepper: One of the cheapest and easiest loved gifts once Summer begins.
Pepper Poppers: Cooked using Hot Pepper and Cheese.
Pizza: Can be cooked or bought directly from the Stardrop Saloon.
Shane also accepts Universal Loves, including Golden Pumpkin, Magic Rock Candy, Pearl, Prismatic Shard, Rabbit’s Foot, and Stardrop Tea.
Best practical option: Hot Pepper is hard to beat once Summer starts. The crop keeps producing after its first harvest, so a small patch can supply Shane with loved gifts for most of the season without spending money at the Saloon.
Shane’s liked gifts
If you do not have a loved gift, Shane has several broad liked categories.
- All Eggs except Void Egg
- All Fruit except Hot Pepper
- Universal Likes, except Pickles
Regular Eggs become an easy repeatable option once you have chickens. Fruit also works well, although Hot Pepper is treated separately because Shane loves it rather than merely liking it.
Shane’s neutral gifts
Neutral gifts provide only a small friendship increase and are rarely worth using when you are actively trying to romance Shane.
- All Milk
- Strange Bun
- Universal Neutrals
Strange Bun is worth remembering because Shane sends you its recipe at seven hearts, but as of the current game it is only a neutral gift for him.
Gifts to avoid
Shane has several disliked forageables and two particularly easy-to-miss hated gifts.
Disliked gifts
- Chanterelle
- Purple Mushroom
- Seaweed
- Snow Yam
- Wild Horseradish
- Winter Root
- Universal Dislikes
Hated gifts
- Pickles
- Quartz
- Universal Hates, except Seaweed and Strange Bun
Pickles are the biggest trap because Artisan Goods are normally easy gifts for many villagers. Shane specifically hates Pickles. Quartz is another poor choice despite being useful for several other NPCs.
Who is Shane?
Shane is one of the twelve marriage candidates in Stardew Valley. He rents a room at Marnie’s Ranch and lives there with his aunt, Marnie, and his goddaughter, Jas.
At the start of the game, he works for JojaMart under Morris and is openly unfriendly towards the player. He spends much of his free time at the Stardrop Saloon.
His friendship storyline gradually reveals that he is dealing with depression and alcohol misuse. Later events show him seeking counselling, reducing his drinking, strengthening his relationship with Jas, and focusing more on raising chickens.
Shane also has a favourite chicken named Charlie. His interest in poultry eventually becomes mechanically useful to the player because progressing his friendship can unlock blue chickens.
Shane’s schedule and easiest places to find him
Shane has a simple routine while JojaMart is still open: work during the day, Stardrop Saloon in the evening, then back to Marnie’s Ranch.
Weekdays before JojaMart closes: JojaMart during the day, Stardrop Saloon after work.
After JojaMart closes: Spends more of the daytime at Marnie’s Ranch before heading to the Saloon.
Saturday: Pierre’s General Store in the afternoon, then the Saloon.
Best reliable location: Stardrop Saloon in the evening.
Weekdays while JojaMart is open
On a normal Monday to Friday, Shane leaves Marnie’s Ranch at 7:10am, works at JojaMart until 5pm, then walks directly to the Stardrop Saloon. He leaves the Saloon at 11:10pm and heads home.
After JojaMart closes
Once JojaMart is no longer operating, Shane spends his mornings around Marnie’s Ranch. On many weekdays he moves between the kitchen, his room, and the fireplace before leaving for the Stardrop Saloon in the afternoon.
Saturday
Shane spends the morning at Marnie’s Ranch, leaves for Pierre’s General Store around noon, then heads to the Stardrop Saloon at 5pm.
Sunday
On a normal Sunday, Shane spends much of the day at Marnie’s Ranch before going to the Stardrop Saloon in the evening. His Sunday routine can change after seeing Alex’s 14-heart event because Shane may join the gridball group in the Saloon’s back room.
Rain can also override the normal weekend routine while JojaMart remains open, sending Shane to work. Once Ginger Island’s Beach Resort is unlocked, he may occasionally spend a day there as well.
Shane’s heart events and romance progression
Shane’s heart events in Stardew Valley deal with heavier subjects than most romance routes, particularly depression and alcohol misuse, before shifting towards recovery, family, chickens, and a more hopeful future.
Two hearts
Enter Cindersap Forest between 8pm and midnight. Shane shares a drink with you at the pond and talks about his depression while warning the player against drinking heavily.
Three hearts
Shane sends you the Pepper Poppers recipe in the mail. His regular dialogue also becomes somewhat friendlier.
Four hearts
Enter Marnie’s Ranch while Shane is home. Marnie finds him passed out in his room surrounded by empty beer cans. The scene reveals how severe his depression has become and how it is affecting Jas and Marnie.
Six hearts
Enter Cindersap Forest between 9am and 8pm while it is raining or storming. You find Shane in a severe mental-health crisis at the edge of the cliffs.
None of the four dialogue options during the main scene change friendship. The player takes Shane to the hospital, where Harvey says he is concerned about Shane’s mental health and plans to recommend counselling.
The following day, Shane visits the farm and explains that he intends to start counselling.
“I’m glad I was there to help.” gives +10 friendship.
“I’m just happy you’re still here.” also gives +10.
“You needed a serious wake-up call.” costs 10 friendship.
Seven hearts
Shane has several seven-heart events. After the six-heart storyline, visit Marnie’s Ranch while he is home to see him explain that he has been feeling better, cutting back on beer, and relying more on the people around him.
Another event can trigger in Pelican Town between 10am and 4pm on a sunny day if you also have at least two hearts with Emily and Clint. Shane is filming an advertisement for Joja with their help.
At seven hearts, he also sends the Strange Bun recipe in the mail.
Eight hearts
Enter Marnie’s Ranch while Shane is home after completing the required six-heart follow-up. Jas takes you into the normally locked room where Shane keeps his chickens.
Shane introduces his special blue chickens and talks about passing his poultry knowledge on to Jas. This event permanently unlocks the chance to obtain blue chickens.
After reaching eight hearts, give Shane a Bouquet if you want to begin dating him.
Ten hearts
Leave the farmhouse before 6:30am to begin the setup, then visit the Bus Stop between 4pm and 6pm.
Shane takes you to Zuzu City to watch the Tunnelers play gridball. During the match, he thanks you for staying with him through his struggles with depression and anxiety, and the event becomes the main romantic payoff of his storyline.
The dialogue choice about whether you enjoyed the game does not change friendship.
Fourteen hearts
Shane’s 14-heart event is available after marriage and unfolds across three days.
For the first part, enter Pelican Town on any day except Friday between 8am and 5pm. Shane emerges from the Stardrop Saloon, making Marnie and Jas worry that he may have started drinking heavily again.
Return to town the following day and the player confronts him. Shane becomes upset at the accusation. Return again the day after that and you finally discover what he has actually been doing in the Saloon.
Instead of drinking alcohol, Shane has been playing an arcade machine and drinking Joja Cola. He explains that video games help him manage the urge to drink. Neither final dialogue choice changes friendship.
How to unlock blue chickens
One of the most useful friendship rewards tied to Shane is the ability to obtain blue chickens.
First reach eight hearts with Shane and view his chicken event at Marnie’s Ranch. After that, every Chicken purchased from Marnie and every Chicken hatched from an Egg in an Incubator has a 25% chance to be blue.
Blue chickens are visually different but mechanically identical to white chickens. They produce normal Eggs and do not provide an extra profit bonus.
Marriage benefits
After marrying Shane in Stardew Valley, he moves into the farmhouse and adds his own spouse room. He also builds a small chicken coop behind the farmhouse where he sometimes spends time with Charlie.
Like other spouses, Shane may occasionally help with farm chores. He can also give you different items depending on the weather and whether he stays inside.
Rainy days
- Beer
- Large Egg
- Pale Ale
- Void Egg
- Pepper Poppers
Days spent inside
- Omelet
- Pepper Poppers
- Pizza
Marriage also changes Shane’s routine. He no longer works at JojaMart, even if the store is still operating. He normally remains around the farm but still makes regular trips to Marnie’s Ranch, Pierre’s General Store, the river, and the Stardrop Saloon.
Fast friendship tips
Shane is one of the easier marriage candidates to raise friendship with because his schedule is predictable and several of his loved gifts are easy to obtain.
- Buy Pizza or Beer from the Stardrop Saloon if you want an immediate loved gift.
- Grow Hot Peppers in Summer for a cheap, renewable supply of loved gifts.
- Use Eggs as easy liked gifts once you have a Coop.
- Talk to Shane when you see him at JojaMart, Marnie’s Ranch, or the Stardrop Saloon.
- Save a loved gift for Spring 20 to take advantage of the 8× birthday multiplier.
- Complete the six-heart follow-up before trying to trigger his blue chicken event.
- Give him a Bouquet once you reach eight hearts if you want to continue the romance.
- Never use Pickles or Quartz as fallback gifts.
Shane starts as one of Pelican Town’s most difficult characters to approach, but his storyline becomes much more personal as friendship grows. Whether you romance him or stop at eight hearts for the blue chickens, Hot Peppers, Pizza, and regular evening visits to the Stardrop Saloon make his friendship route straightforward to manage.
