Terraria does not have a standard single-player cheat console that you open with the backtick or tilde key.

In vanilla Terraria 1.4.5, the commands players usually mean fall into two different groups: commands entered directly into a dedicated server console and slash commands entered through the in-game chat.

That distinction matters because commands such as kick, ban, save, dawn and exit are primarily server-administration tools. Player commands such as /roll, /death and the new /bossdamage work through chat instead. If you want god mode, item duplication or direct control over weather and enemy spawns, vanilla Terraria handles those through Journey Mode rather than a cheat command.

Quick answer: Dedicated server admins type commands directly into the Terraria server terminal without a leading slash. Players use slash commands in the normal multiplayer chat. There is no vanilla backtick cheat console. For god mode and similar powers, create a Journey Mode character and world.

Updated: October 2026 for Terraria 1.4.5.8.

Major changes: Removed the incorrect backtick-console instructions, separated server and chat commands, added the 1.4.5 boss damage tracker, and clarified Journey Mode powers.

Research basis: Current official Terraria Wiki server, chat, Journey Mode and command-line documentation.

Does Terraria have a console?

Yes, but not in the same sense as games such as Skyrim or many PC survival games. Vanilla Terraria has a dedicated server console for administering a server. It also has an in-game chat command system available to players.

Pressing the backtick or tilde key does not open a standard vanilla cheat console. The older version of this guide incorrectly treated server commands as if they could be entered into such a window from Host & Play.

How to use Terraria dedicated server commands

On Windows, Terraria includes TerrariaServer.exe with the game installation. Starting this application creates a dedicated server independently from the normal game client. Once the world is running, the server terminal accepts administrative commands directly.

  1. Open your Terraria installation directory.
  2. Run TerrariaServer.exe.
  3. Select or create a world and configure the server when prompted.
  4. Wait for the server to finish loading.
  5. Type a command such as help, playing or save directly into the server window and press Enter.

Do not place a forward slash before dedicated-server console commands. The slash is used for commands entered through in-game chat.

Host & Play is different: hosting a normal multiplayer world from Terraria’s menu does not give you the same standalone server-terminal interface as running the dedicated server application.

Terraria in-game chat commands

Players do not need access to the dedicated server terminal to use Terraria’s standard chat commands. On the Desktop version, press Enter to open chat, type the command with a leading slash and press Enter again.

The same command system is available across modern console and mobile versions through their normal chat interface. Since Terraria 1.4.5, English command names can be entered regardless of the language selected in-game.

Chat commandEffect
/p <message>Sends a message only to members of your team.
/me <message>Posts the message as a third-person action.
/playing or /playersLists players connected to the server.
/rollRolls a random number from 1 to 100.
/emoji <emote> or /eDisplays an emote.
/helpShows available player chat commands.
/rpsRandomly performs a rock, paper or scissors emote.
/deathShows the current character’s total deaths.
/pvpdeathShows deaths caused by other players.
/alldeathDisplays the death counts of players on the server.
/allpvpdeathDisplays PvP death counts for players on the server.
/bossdamageShows recent boss or event damage contribution rankings.

What does /bossdamage do in Terraria 1.4.5?

/bossdamage is one of the most useful additions for multiplayer groups in Terraria 1.4.5. It displays damage contribution from up to three recent boss fights or supported events.

For a boss encounter, Terraria tracks damage dealt to the boss and relevant associated parts or servants. The results show each player’s contribution and the time taken to defeat the boss. Damage without a clearly identified player source can appear under traps and debuffs.

The tracker also works with supported events, making it useful when a multiplayer group wants to compare performance without installing a damage-meter mod.

How to use god mode and cheats in Terraria

If you are looking for actual cheat-like features rather than server administration, use Journey Mode. Journey characters can only enter Journey worlds, but they gain access to Terraria’s Power Menu.

Journey Mode includes many of the features players often search for as “Terraria console commands”:

  • Godmode for immunity to damage and knockback, unlimited breath and extremely fast Mana regeneration.
  • Item duplication after researching enough copies of an item.
  • Time controls including freeze, dawn, noon, dusk, midnight and speeds up to 24x.
  • Weather controls for rain and wind.
  • Enemy spawn rate from 0x to 10x normal.
  • Enemy difficulty from Journey’s 0.5x setting through Classic, Expert and Master equivalents.
  • Biome spread control for Corruption, Crimson and Hallow.

On Desktop, Journey powers can be accessed from the inventory interface and through the Toggle Journey Powers control. Console and mobile versions expose the Journey options through their corresponding menu interface.

So, is there a Terraria god mode command? Not in normal vanilla chat. Godmode is a Journey Mode power. Server software such as TShock can add separate admin commands, but those are not standard Terraria commands.

Useful Terraria dedicated-server startup parameters

Runtime console commands should not be confused with command-line parameters. These options are supplied when TerrariaServer starts and are useful for automating a dedicated server.

ParameterPurpose
-config <file>Loads a server configuration file.
-port <number>Sets the listening port.
-players <number> / -maxplayersSets the maximum player count.
-pass <password>Sets a server password.
-motd <text>Sets the message of the day.
-world <path>Loads the specified world automatically.
-autocreate <1|2|3>Creates a Small, Medium or Large world if required.
-worldname <name>Names an automatically generated world.
-seed <seed>Sets the seed for an automatically created world.
-steamEnables Steam server support.

For persistent servers, using serverconfig.txt is generally easier than entering every setting manually whenever the server starts.

What about TShock, tModLoader and modded Terraria commands?

Many command lists online include things such as item spawning, teleporting, god mode, world editing or detailed player permissions. Those commands usually come from third-party server software or mods rather than vanilla Terraria.

TShock, for example, provides a substantially more advanced server-administration and permission system. tModLoader can also expose commands supplied by individual mods. The exact command list therefore depends on what your server has installed.

If a command such as /god, /give or a similar admin shortcut does not work on a clean Terraria server, it is probably from a modded server environment rather than vanilla 1.4.5.

Terraria console commands FAQ

How do I open the console in Terraria?

There is no standard vanilla cheat console opened with tilde or backtick. Dedicated server commands are typed into the Terraria server terminal. Player slash commands are entered through the normal in-game chat.

Can I use Terraria console commands in single-player?

Most server-management commands are irrelevant in ordinary single-player because there is no dedicated server terminal to administer. The chat interface still exists, but many chat commands are designed around multiplayer information. For cheat-like single-player control, Journey Mode is the intended vanilla option.

Is there a god mode command in Terraria?

Not as a normal vanilla slash command. Journey Mode contains a Godmode toggle in its Power Menu. Modded server software can add separate commands with similar functionality.

Can console players use Terraria commands?

Modern console versions support Terraria’s in-game chat-command system. The dedicated-server terminal is a separate server-hosting interface, so it should not be confused with commands entered directly on a PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch client.

What is the newest Terraria chat command?

/bossdamage was added in Terraria 1.4.5. It shows player damage contribution for recent boss encounters and supported events.

Terraria commands are mostly about servers, not skipping the game

Vanilla Terraria’s command system is much more restrained than the cheat consoles found in some sandbox games. Dedicated-server commands focus on keeping multiplayer worlds running, managing players and controlling basic world conditions. Chat commands handle communication and statistics, while Journey Mode contains the powerful tools for players who want direct control over time, weather, difficulty, spawning and character survival. Once those systems are separated, Terraria’s command list becomes much easier to understand.
