Most of the time, Isaac can hold only one card, rune, soul stone, or pill in the consumable slot. If you pick up another one, you usually have to replace what you are holding unless you have an item that gives you an extra consumable slot.

TL;DR – Key Info
  • Cards are single-use consumables.
  • On PC, press Q to use your held card.
  • On Xbox-style controls, use the Use Consumable button, usually RB.
  • On PlayStation and Switch, use the equivalent right-shoulder consumable button.
  • Hold the drop button to drop your held card, pill, rune, or trinket.
  • Items like Starter Deck let you hold two cards, runes, or soul stones at once.

How to use a card

To use a card, pick it up and press the consumable button. The effect triggers immediately, and the card disappears.

Worth Knowing: Controls can vary depending on version, controller layout, and custom bindings. If the button does not work, check the in-game controls menu.

How to drop or switch cards

If you want to keep a card for later but pick up something else, you may need to drop your current consumable first. On PC, hold Ctrl to drop your held card, pill, rune, or trinket. On Xbox-style controls, the drop or switch input is usually RT.

Can you hold more than one card?

Usually, no. Cards, runes, soul stones, and pills share the same consumable slot. However, some items change that rule.

Starter Deck is the clearest example. It lets Isaac hold two cards, runes, or soul stones at once, replaces pills with card-type consumables, and gives a random card, rune, or soul stone when picked up.

That makes Starter Deck especially useful if you want to save a teleport card while still carrying a resource card, combat card, or rune for later.

Best ways to use cards

Save resource cards

Cards like 2 of Diamonds, 2 of Clubs, and 2 of Spades are better when you already have a lot of coins, bombs, or keys to double.

Use teleport cards to escape

The Fool, The Stars, and The Hermit can help you leave dangerous rooms, escape after grabbing an item, or reposition quickly.

Use combat cards before hard rooms

Cards that give damage, invincibility, or room-wide effects are often best saved for bosses, challenge rooms, or rooms packed with enemies.

Use Strength carefully

Strength gives temporary power and health for the room, which can help in tough fights or certain Devil Deal situations.
