The second part of our Kingdom Hearts story deep dive focuses on the origins of Xehanort and the chain of events that turn a promising student at Scala ad Caelum into the architect of the series’ central conflict.

It follows the collapse of Dark Road’s fragile stability into Birth by Sleep, where his ideology finally takes shape through Terra, Ventus, and Aqua.

Xehanort Origin – Dark Road

Centuries after the ancient Keyblade War and the fall of Daybreak Town, the city of Scala ad Caelum stands as a training academy for new Keyblade wielders. Among the students is a young, silver-haired prodigy named Xehanort, who left his quiet life on Destiny Islands to train as a Keyblade wielder.

Unlike the fractured, paranoid era of the Foretellers, Scala ad Caelum initially appears stable and hopeful. Xehanort grows up surrounded by classmates who genuinely trust one another, making the later collapse of the group far more devastating.

  • Eraqus: Xehanort’s best friend, fiercest rival, and a strict traditionalist devoted entirely to the Light.
  • Baldr: A gentle, sensitive boy deeply devoted to his older sister, an upperclassman at the academy.
  • Hermod: A conscientious, structured student who often acts as the voice of reason for the group.
  • Vor: The youngest member of the class, whose admiration for the upperclassmen eventually pushes her toward their ideology.
  • Urd: A mature, deeply perceptive, and highly capable mage.
  • Bragi: A laid-back, observant, and seemingly unbothered classmate who quietly watches the group’s dynamics unfold.

Together, they study under the strict, traditional guidance of Master Odin.

The Missing Upperclassmen

The peace of the academy is shattered when a group of upperclassmen vanishes during their Mark of Mastery exam. Master Odin tasks Xehanort’s class with traveling beyond Scala ad Caelum to investigate the disappearances. He also ensures Baldr stays behind, as one of the older students is his sister.

Among the upperclassmen participating in the expedition are Hoder, Sigrun, Heimdall, Vidar, Vali, Helgi, and Vala.

As Xehanort and his classmates chase the mystery across multiple worlds, they gradually uncover a far more dangerous truth. To prepare for a looming threat, the seniors had been traveling to different worlds to locate the 7 pure lights – seven manifestations of light. With them, they intended to summon Kingdom Hearts, utilizing its power to purge all evil from existence.

Realizing that ripping these lights away would disrupt the natural order, Xehanort’s group opposes the upperclassmen, though a sympathetic Vor defects to join the seniors’ cause. The mission rapidly devolves into a nightmare as the upperclassmen begin turning up dead.

In a horrific twist, it is revealed that it was the sentient darkness growing inside Baldr that lashed out and killed Hoder. Hoder had desperately tried to reach out and protect her brother from the darkness consuming him, only to be slaughtered by the very shadow born from his heart.

Following this tragedy, Baldr’s darkness continued its rampage, picking off the remaining upperclassmen alongside Xehanort’s own friends, eventually killing Hermod, Vor, and Urd as well.

The tragedy forces the surviving students to confront a painful reality: the pure Light they were taught to believe in is terrifyingly fragile.

The Enemy Within

The truth is far worse than anyone expected: the killer was never an outside force. From a young age, Baldr possessed an intense empathy that allowed him to absorb the hidden malice and negative emotions of the people around him.

Over time, these emotions accumulated into a self-aware Darkness within his heart. Witnessing his sister Hoder’s brutal death caused Baldr’s heart to completely fracture from grief and guilt. In that moment of vulnerability, Baldr entirely gave up his will, allowing this newly awakened Darkness to permanently assume total control over his body.

When the upperclassmen abandoned their initial plan of summoning Kingdom Hearts, realizing its danger, Baldr turned on them. His fractured heart became a vessel for a powerful, self-aware Darkness born from accumulated fear, grief, and hatred.

Baldr becomes obsessed with recreating the conditions necessary to summon Kingdom Hearts, believing the deaths of powerful Keyblade wielders can feed and amplify darkness itself.

With the academy decimated, Baldr attempts to unleash the full power of the Darkness consuming him to swallow Scala ad Caelum. Left with no alternative, Xehanort and Eraqus launch a desperate counteroffensive. Faced with Baldr’s overwhelming power, Xehanort begins accepting darkness not as something to fear, but as a force that can be controlled and wielded.

However, neither Xehanort nor Eraqus deals the finishing blow. In the climax, Hoder’s lingering spirit manifests on the battlefield, dissolving Baldr’s physical vessel and scattering the Darkness back into the void.

The destruction of Xehanort’s class appeared to be the end of another tragic chapter in Keyblade history. But hidden beneath the collapse was a far older figure who had been quietly observing events from the sidelines all along.

The Secret Watcher

Amidst the annihilation of the class, one question remained: What happened to Bragi?

Throughout the entire tragedy, Bragi managed to survive by staying out of the spotlight, faking his own death, and disappearing during the chaos unnoticed. As it happens, Bragi was actually Luxu, the ancient disciple of the Master of Masters.

Following the events of Union χ, Luxu had successfully cast off his original form and possessed the empty body of Brain. Over the subsequent centuries, Luxu continued his assignment to body-hop down the generations to watch history unfold.

Luxu passed the No Name Keyblade to Master Odin, integrating it into the academy’s lineage.

Xehanort’s connection to the Master of Masters was never accidental; Luxu had been silently guiding the Keyblade’s path toward him for generations. In hindsight, even the Dark Seeker Saga may have been only one step in a plan that stretches back to the age of fairy tales.

Nearly everyone Xehanort had grown up with was dead. The hopeful future promised by Scala ad Caelum had collapsed in a matter of days, leaving only Xehanort and Eraqus to carry its legacy forward.

The Birth of a Tyrant

With the class completely ruined, only Xehanort and Eraqus survive to venture onto their own Mark of Mastery exam, while Bragi slips into the shadows to prepare his next host body.

While the tragedy inspires Eraqus to develop a fanatical, absolute devotion to the Light, it fundamentally changes Xehanort’s worldview.

Having witnessed the upperclassmen’s failure to summon Kingdom Hearts through the 7 pure lights, and having personally suffered Baldr’s descent into darkness and the destruction of nearly an entire generation of wielders, Xehanort becomes obsessed with the ancient balance between Light and Darkness.

The failure of both extremes – blind faith in Light and unchecked Darkness – convinces him that neither side can exist alone. Years of research would eventually lead him to the ancient legend of the χ-blade and the fateful balance of seven lights and thirteen darknesses. To Xehanort, Kingdom Hearts was no longer something to be discovered. It was something that had to be recreated.

After completing the Mark of Mastery exam, Master Odin officially bestowed No Name upon Xehanort, unknowingly handing the catalyst of the apocalypse directly to the boy Luxu had been watching all along.

Convinced that destiny has chosen him for a greater purpose, Xehanort departs Scala ad Caelum on a solitary pilgrimage to master the darkness. Decades pass, but Xehanort never lets go of the conclusions he reached in Scala ad Caelum.

The Lost Boy

Over time, Xehanort’s search for balance gradually evolves into an obsession. His experiments with darkness eventually lead him toward one of the last surviving remnants of the ancient age: Ventus. Sensing the uncorrupted power dormant inside the boy’s heart, Xehanort takes Ven on as his apprentice.

He attempts to use Ventus as his perfect vessel for darkness. However, his innate good and pure heart refuse to utilize the dark powers, frustrating Xehanort. Losing patience, Xehanort takes a radical step, driving his Keyblade into his apprentice’s heart and extracting the concentrated darkness hidden inside him.

The severed darkness instantly manifests in physical form as a separate, entirely autonomous entity: Vanitas.

Union χ heavily implies that Vanitas is not merely a fragment of Ventus’s darkness, but one of the ancient True Darknesses itself.

By the time Birth by Sleep begins, Xehanort is no longer searching for understanding. He has fully embraced the belief that suffering, conflict, and imbalance are necessary tools for recreating the ancient conditions that once summoned Kingdom Hearts.

Forced extraction shatters Ventus’s mind, leaving him in a coma. Xehanort leaves him under the care of Eraqus, while taking Vanitas as a new apprentice, setting the stage for the tragic events of Birth by Sleep.

Wayfinder Trio – Birth by Sleep

The Land of Departure

Decades after his pilgrimage, an elderly Master Xehanort returns to his old classmate, Master Eraqus, who now presides over an isolated sanctuary known as the Land of Departure. Eraqus has dedicated his life to training three promising young apprentices, whom he views as his surrogate children:

  • Terra: Strong, stoic, and fiercely protective of his friends, though harboring a deep reservoir of raw, unpolished inner darkness.
  • Aqua: A deeply disciplined, righteous, and exceptionally skilled magic-wielder.
  • Ventus: A sweet, amnesiac boy who was brought to the temple years ago by Master Xehanort himself.

The story begins with Terra and Aqua’s Mark of Mastery exam, where they compete to become Keyblade Masters. Master Xehanort serves as an official guest judge. Sensing Terra’s deep insecurities, Xehanort subtly manipulates the magical trials, forcing Terra to manifest his inner darkness. Astounded by this display, Master Eraqus fails Terra and grants the rank of Master solely to Aqua.

Following the exam, Master Xehanort vanishes, and a swarm of strange, emotion-driven monsters called the Unversed begin consuming the Disney worlds. Eraqus sends Terra out to destroy the monsters and find Xehanort, while a masked, sadistic boy named Vanitas targets Ventus, taunting him into running away from home to follow Terra.

Aqua is dispatched to observe Terra and keep him from falling into the darkness, as well as bring Ven back to the Land of Departure.

Fractured Paths

As the three apprentices travel independently across the universe, Master Xehanort’s trap snaps shut around each of them:

The Infiltration of Terra: Master Xehanort follows Terra across the worlds, posing as a wise, sympathetic mentor who understands his struggles. Xehanort feeds Terra’s resentment toward Eraqus, manipulating him into executing dark acts under the guise of protecting his friends. By the time Terra realizes he is a puppet, he has been isolated from everyone who loved him.

The Secret of Ventus: Ven tracks down Master Xehanort and learns the horrifying truth behind his missing memories. There, his true purpose is revealed: Ventus and Vanitas are meant to clash and destroy each other, forging the χ-blade, a Keyblade which enables the summoning of Kingdom Hearts.

The Isolation of Aqua: Aqua wanders the worlds trapped in an impossible position. She desperately tries to maintain her bond with Terra while fulfilling her duties to Master Eraqus, but her constant surveillance only convinces Terra that she no longer trusts him, shattering their makeshift family.

Passing the Torch

While tracking Xehanort, the paths of the apprentices intersect with a remote world known as Destiny Islands and the metropolis of Radiant Garden. Unaware of their influence on the future, their brief interactions with three ordinary children rewrite the destiny, choosing the guardians who will ultimately face Xehanort.

Terra bequeaths the Keyblade to Riku, choosing him as his definitive successor.

Aqua briefly considers bequeathing the Keyblade to Sora as well, but seeing how deeply Sora cares for Riku, she decides against it. She chooses not to force this burden on Sora, advising him instead to stay by Riku’s side and protect him when he falters.

In Radiant Garden, Aqua laces Kairi’s necklace with a protective spell, ensuring that if Kairi is ever swallowed by darkness, her light will guide her and those bound to her out of the abyss.

The Fall of Eraqus

Ven returns home to confront Master Eraqus about his origins. Upon hearing that Xehanort plans to use Ventus and Vanitas to forge the χ-blade, Eraqus is overwhelmed by trauma and fear. Remembering how the darkness ruined his classmates at Scala ad Caelum, Eraqus’s absolute devotion to the Light transforms into fanatical desperation.

He concludes that the universe’s safety outweighs his love for his apprentice; the χ-blade cannot be allowed to exist, and therefore, Ventus must be destroyed. Just as Eraqus raises his weapon to strike the final blow, a dark corridor rips open and Terra steps through.

Seeing his master attempting to execute Ventus validates every manipulative lie Master Xehanort whispered in Terra’s ear. Convinced that Eraqus has gone insane, Terra steps between them and teleports Ven to safety. To match the overwhelming power of a Keyblade Master, Terra fully gives in to his darkness.

Terra overpowers Master Eraqus, dealing a wounding blow that knocks the old master to his knees. Terra is instantly struck with regret. Eraqus, looking up at his student, realizes his own fanatical error; he allowed his fear of the dark to dictate his actions, driving away the children he raised.

Right as Terra reaches out to help his weakened master, Master Xehanort manifests out of the shadows behind Eraqus. With a cruel, mocking smile, Xehanort delivers the definitive strike. Master Eraqus’s body dissolves into light, leaving nothing behind but his discarded Keyblade, Master’s Defender.

For Terra, this becomes the point of no return. Every warning Aqua tried to give him, every manipulation Xehanort carefully planted, and every doubt he carried about Eraqus suddenly collapsed into a single devastating moment.

Xehanort turns to a shattered Terra and coldly tells him to come to the Keyblade Graveyard, leaving the Land of Departure to be consumed by darkness.

Much Needed Explanation – The Anatomy of a Complete Person

Before the finale, it’s worth clarifying one of Kingdom Hearts’ most important concepts.

When a strong person’s heart is forcibly separated from their body, their existence can split into three distinct components:

  • The Heart: The core of a person’s identity, emotions, memories, and moral alignment (Light or Dark).
  • The Body: The physical vessel. It has no inherent identity or will of its own.
  • The Soul: The spark of life. It is the engine that animates the physical body.

If a person’s separated components are restored to the proper state, the original individual can eventually be recompleted.

Left unattended and unused, the parts get transformed into entities:

  • Heartless: Born from the heart. Stripped of its physical shell, the heart plunges into the Realm of Darkness. If a person’s Heartless is tracked down and destroyed by a Keyblade, that corrupted heart is purified and released.
  • Nobody: Born from the body and soul left behind after a heart becomes a Heartless. Many powerful Nobodies retain the intellect and memories of their former selves. Though once believed incapable of feeling emotion, they can gradually grow new hearts over time.

There is a possibility of a soul detaching from the body, but it is very rare.

The Keyblade Graveyard

With no home left and their family fractured beyond recognition, Terra, Aqua, and Ventus converge on the Keyblade Graveyard for a final confrontation against Master Xehanort and Vanitas.

The resulting battles execute Xehanort’s grand design:

The Possession of Terra: Xehanort deliberately baits Terra into embracing his darkness. When it peaks, Xehanort drives his own Keyblade into his chest, extracting his old heart and forcefully injecting it into Terra’s body. Xehanort successfully takes over the young warrior’s physical vessel, reborn as Terra-Xehanort. However, Terra’s unyielding willpower binds itself directly to his discarded armor, animating it into the Lingering Will, which launches a counterattack that knocks the possessed Terra-Xehanort unconscious.

The Forging of the χ-blade: Concurrently, Vanitas forcibly reunites with Ventus, restoring the split halves of a single heart. An imperfect, highly unstable version of the χ-blade is successfully forged in the physical world, causing the Kingdom Hearts to rip open the sky above the graveyard.

The climax takes place simultaneously in two dimensions. In the physical realm, Aqua and Mickey wage a desperate battle against the χ-blade-wielding Vanitas to protect Ven’s physical body.

Inside his own fractured subconscious, Ventus fights against Vanitas. Knowing that destroying Vanitas will permanently shatter his own heart and erase his existence, Ven chooses self-sacrifice, destroying χ-blade in the process.

Ventus’s body remains alive but unresponsive, while his shattered heart drifts aimlessly through the Lanes Between until it finds refuge inside the heart of the young boy, Sora.

The Final Sacrifice

Aqua awakens on the ruined battlefield to find the universe temporarily saved, but her friends lost. She takes Ven’s unresponsive, breathing body and takes it back to the ruined remains of the Land of Departure.

Using the late Master Eraqus’s Keyblade, she transforms the world into Castle Oblivion, locking Ventus inside the hidden Chamber of Waking, where no one can ever find him.

Aqua then tracks down Terra-Xehanort in Radiant Garden, desperately fighting to extract Xehanort’s heart from her friend’s body. During the battle, Terra-Xehanort begins sinking into a Realm of Darkness. Diving into the abyss after him, Aqua realizes she only has enough power to save herself or Terra.

In an act of self-sacrifice, Aqua strips off her own armor, straps the unconscious Xehanort onto it, and uses her remaining magic to blast him upward into the Realm of Light. Aqua is pulled down into the void, left entirely isolated and trapped inside the Realm of Darkness.

While Terra loses his body and Ventus loses his heart, Aqua loses her freedom.

Meanwhile, the amnesiac Terra-Xehanort is discovered on the surface of Radiant Garden by the scientist Ansem the Wise. He becomes a research scientist, studying Heartless, Nobodies, and eventually overtaking his master and stealing his name.

Ever-watching Luxu

During the events of Birth by Sleep, Luxu operated under a loud, chaotic new identity: Braig, a cynical mercenary hired by Master Xehanort to do his dirty work.

Once again, Luxu fulfilled the role the Master of Masters assigned him centuries earlier: follow No Name and watch history unfold.

After the battle at the Keyblade Graveyard, he found Terra-Xehanort and became his apprentice, binding his future with Xehanort.

Final Words

The battle at the Keyblade Graveyard ended with no true victors. Terra was possessed, Ventus was lost, Aqua was trapped in darkness, and Xehanort’s ambitions survived.

As one era came to a close, another was quietly taking shape in Radiant Garden, where the amnesiac Terra-Xehanort would soon start the research that reshaped the fate of the entire universe.
