The third part of our Kingdom Hearts story deep dive focuses on the start of Sora’s journey and the events that follow, laying the foundation for Kingdom Hearts II.

While Kingdom Hearts begins as a simple adventure about friendship, each subsequent story gradually strips away that simplicity.

Memories are rewritten, identities are fractured, and even death becomes difficult to define. By the end of this chapter, the line between a person and their heart has become more complicated than ever.

Catch up before Part III

Start with Kingdom Hearts Story Deep Dive Part I, then continue with Kingdom Hearts Story Deep Dive Part II before diving into Sora’s journey.

Child of Destiny – Kingdom Hearts

On the Destiny Islands, three teenagers – Sora, Riku, and Kairi – dream of escaping their small world. Before they can set sail, a violent storm of darkness tears the island apart.

In the chaos, the Keyblade destined for Riku senses his heart wavering in the darkness and instead manifests in Sora’s hands. Sora fights bravely, but the abyss swallows the island.

The three friends are scattered across the realms: Riku is drawn toward the darkness, Kairi falls into a coma, and Sora washes up in a strange, shifting crossroads known as Traverse Town.

Unbreakable Bond

Concurrently, in Disney Castle, King Mickey vanishes to investigate the rapid disappearance of the worlds, leaving behind a letter for his most trusted advisors, Donald and Goofy. The King instructs them to find the “key” capable of saving the worlds.

Donald and Goofy travel to Traverse Town and cross paths with Sora. Recognizing the Keyblade, they form an unbreakable alliance. Together, they travel from world to world to seal the Keyholes – passages that the Heartless use to invade the realm – preventing the fall to darkness.

The Betrayal

The journey culminates at Hollow Bastion, the fortress hijacked by an alliance of villains led by Maleficent. Maleficent has spent months manipulating a desperate Riku, convincing him that Sora abandoned him for new friends and the power of the Keyblade. Desperate to bring back Kairi, Riku fully embraces darkness.

When Sora confronts him, Riku exerts his right as the true successor of the bequeathing. He forcibly strips the Keyblade out of Sora’s hands, leaving Sora weaponless. Donald and Goofy, bound by royal decree to follow the key, leave Sora behind.

Left with nothing but a wooden sword, Sora marches into the castle alone. When he confronts Riku again, Sora declares that his heart doesn’t rely on a weapon; his friends are his power. This unyielding display of love and loyalty causes the Keyblade to permanently choose Sora as its wielder, breaking its bond with Riku.

The Hollowed Heart

Having gradually consumed Riku’s heart from within, Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, finally takes full control of his body and manifests a new weapon: the Keyblade of Heart.

This entity is not the real scientist Ansem the Wise, but rather Master Xehanort’s Heartless. Years prior, Xehanort had overthrown his scientific master, stolen his identity, and split his own heart from his body – leaving this powerful Heartless to masquerade under his victim’s name.

Riku confronts Sora, revealing a secret: Kairi is one of the 7 Princesses of Heart, and her missing heart has been hiding safely inside Sora since the night their island fell.

The Princesses of Heart are seven maidens whose hearts contain pure light with no darkness. Maleficent gathered them to forge the Final Keyhole and reach Kingdom Hearts. Kairi, despite living on Destiny Islands, originated from Radiant Garden and unknowingly carried one of these hearts from birth.

Possessed Riku is defeated, allowing Ansem to abandon the body and pursue Kingdom Hearts directly. Though freed from possession, Riku vanishes during the chaos. Sora is left with a dilemma: the final Keyhole cannot be sealed, and Kairi cannot wake up, as long as her heart remains inside his body.

In an act of self-sacrifice, Sora takes Riku’s Keyblade and drives it directly into his own chest. This releases Kairi’s heart, successfully waking her up. However, because Sora released his own heart to save her, his existence undergoes the familiar split between Heartless and Nobody:

  • His heart instantly turns into a small, fragile Heartless.
  • His discarded body and soul vanish, simultaneously creating two Nobodies: Roxas (born from Sora’s body) and Naminé (born from Kairi’s heart altering Sora’s vessel).

Recognizing her friend inside the mindless Shadow, Kairi steps forward. Through the strength of her connection to Sora – and perhaps aided by the protective magic Aqua placed on her years earlier – Kairi throws her arms around the monster, miraculously restoring Sora’s consciousness and restoring his human form.

The Door to Darkness

Fully restored, Sora pursues Ansem to the edge of reality: the End of the World. Ansem seeks the ultimate power of the Kingdom Hearts, believing that the core of reality is a void of supreme darkness.

Sora defeats Ansem after a final clash at the edge of reality. As Ansem commands the doors of Kingdom Hearts to open and grant him ultimate dark power, Sora counters him, declaring that Kingdom Hearts is not darkness, but light. The doors open, unleashing a blinding torrent of pure, radiant light that instantly vaporizes Ansem.

The door’s opening creates a vacuum; millions of Heartless inside threaten to spill out and destroy the worlds. To seal it, the door must be locked from both sides simultaneously using two Keyblades: a Keyblade from the Realm of Light and a Keyblade from the Realm of Darkness.

Unbeknownst to Sora, a parallel quest had been unfolding on the other side of that very door. After Ansem abandoned his body at Hollow Bastion, Riku vanished without a trace. Separated from his friends, he eventually awoke within the Realm of Darkness. There, he encountered King Mickey, who had ventured into the abyss in search of the dark counterpart to Sora’s Keyblade: the Kingdom Key D.

As the doors heave open, Riku stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the King amidst a sea of converging Heartless. Though finally free of Ansem’s control, he now finds himself stranded in the very realm he once embraced.

Sora and Riku lock eyes through the narrowing gap of the door. Riku, choosing the safety of the realms over his own freedom, grabs the interior handles of the massive doors alongside the King to help pull them shut. King Mickey raises his Kingdom Key D, aligning it perfectly with Sora’s Keyblade on the outside.

With a dual flash of blinding magic, Sora and Mickey lock the Door to Darkness from both sides. The event causes the fractured worlds to pull apart, restoring themselves to their original, isolated places in reality.

Kairi is swept back to the restored Destiny Islands, while Sora, Donald, and Goofy are left stranded on a winding road in an unknown world, looking up at the stars and vowing to find a path that will bring Riku and King Mickey home.

Much Needed Explanation – Organization XIII

Organization XIII was established by its first six members – the Nobodies of Ansem the Wise’s treacherous scientific apprentices – who subsequently recruited seven other Nobodies discovered across the worlds.

Each member was assigned a number based on their order of induction and granted a specific title. To symbolize the abandonment of their former identities, Xemnas rearranged each member’s original name and branded it with an “X”.

To avoid disrupting the chronology, we will explain Organization XIII’s goals and members later. For now, it is enough to understand that Organization is not a collection of villains, but a gathering of people who were once somebody else.

Memories Lost – Chain of Memories

Sora’s Tale

Following the winding road, Sora, Donald, and Goofy arrive at a white fortress known as Castle Oblivion. Upon entering, a mysterious figure in a black coat delivers a chilling warning: to find is to lose, and to lose is to find. In this castle, the higher a person ascends, the more of their memories are erased and reconfigured.

As Sora climbs the floors, Organization XIII members – led by Marluxia – execute a coup against their leader, Xemnas. They kidnap Naminé, a witch with the unique ability to alter the memory chains of Sora and anyone bound to him. Under duress, Naminé is forced to strip away Sora’s memories of Kairi, replacing them with fabricated memories of herself.

Blinded by a devotion to protect Naminé, Sora alienates Donald and Goofy as his real past completely evaporates. Along the way, he is forced to fight the Riku Replica, a dark clone engineered by the Organization using the combat data of the real Riku.

The Replica Program was an experimental project created by Vexen. Unlike Nobodies or Heartless, Replicas are artificial human vessels designed to mimic and eventually replace real people. Their appearance, memories, and abilities can be altered depending on the data implanted into them.

However, the coup is compromised. From the lower floors, a loyalist faction of the Organization discovers the treason. What follows is a purge where the Nobodies turn on one another:

The Execution of Vexen (No. IV): Vexen attempts to alert Sora of the memory manipulation by giving him data on Twilight Town. Recognizing him as a threat to his own double-agent plans, Axel steps in. To cement his false loyalty to Marluxia’s traitorous faction, Axel ruthlessly executes a scientist, incinerating Vexen in a burst of flame.

The Demise of Larxene (No. XII): As Sora inches closer to the truth, a sadistic Larxene ambushes him, mocking his fake memories and shattering his fragile psyche. Backed by Donald and Goofy, Sora fights back with unbridled fury. Defeated, Larxene screams in agony as her physical form fractures and disappears.

The Fall of Marluxia (No. XI): Sora finally discovers the depth of the psychological manipulation. He forgives a remorseful Naminé and hunts down the Lord of the Castle. In the highest room of Castle Oblivion, Sora engages Marluxia in a fierce, high-stakes duel, ultimately cutting through his defenses and delivering the definitive strike. Marluxia’s body shatters like glass, leaving behind nothing but a drift of dying rose petals.

Free at last, Naminé offers Sora a choice: she can restore his original memories of Kairi and his home, but doing so means he must enter a stasis pod for a year while she reconstructs his heart. He will also forget everything that happened inside Castle Oblivion. Sora accepts, promising that even if the memory vanishes, the bond in his heart will eventually bring them back together.

Riku’s Tale

Simultaneously, Riku awakens in the lowest basements of Castle Oblivion, having been guided out of the Realm of Darkness by a mysterious entity, Ansem the Wise, known as DiZ (Darkness in Zero).

Riku’s journey is an internal purgatory. The lingering essence of Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, still haunts the darkness inside Riku’s heart, attempting to hijack his body once again. Riku is forced to ascend the basements, fighting off the remaining Organization loyalists – Lexaeus and Zexion – who attempt to destroy him before he can compromise Xemnas’s grand design.

The war in the basements claims the remaining operational members of the castle:

The Fall of Lexaeus (No. V): Lexaeus confronts Riku in the deep basements, wielding an enormous axe-sword. When Lexaeus deals a near-fatal blow, the phantom of Ansem temporarily hijacks Riku’s unconscious body, unleashing a massive surge of darkness that cuts Lexaeus down.

The Murder of Zexion (No. VI): Zexion uses his illusions to masquerade as Sora, attempting to drown Riku in psychological guilt. Riku overcomes the trick, severely wounding the schemer. A weakened Zexion flees into the digital realm, where he is intercepted by Axel and the Riku Replica. Axel convinces the clone that he can become real by absorbing the power of the original. Riku Replica chokes Zexion, siphoning his life force and leaving him to dissolve into thin air.

With the castle completely purged of Organization members, Riku faces his final test. He confronts his own clone, destroying the Riku Replica in a tragic clash of identities, before turning inward to face the phantom of Ansem, Seeker of Darkness. With the help of King Mickey’s light, Riku drives his blade through the specter, refusing to fear his inner shadows any longer.

At the top of the basements, Riku meets Naminé and a sleeping Sora. DiZ arrives, offering Riku help to seal his lingering darkness away forever. Riku refuses the easy path; he chooses to accept both his light and dark, deciding to walk the middle path: The Road to Dawn. He joins forces with DiZ and Mickey, putting on a black coat and tending to watch over Sora until his friend is ready to wake up.

One Year of Life – 358/2 Days

This story takes place concurrently with the end of Kingdom Hearts and much of Chain of Memories.

The moment Sora stabbed himself with the Keyblade at Hollow Bastion, his empty physical shell reformed in Twilight Town as a Nobody. Xemnas finds the boy and names him Roxas (rearranged Sora X), inducting him as the 13th member of the Organization XIII.

Unlike normal Nobodies, Roxas possesses no memories of his life as Sora, leaving him unable to understand who he is or why he exists. Furthermore, because he is made from Sora’s physical vessel, Roxas carries the ability to manifest and wield the Keyblade.

Xemnas exploits this, deploying Roxas across the worlds daily to slaughter Heartless. When a Heartless is slain by a Keyblade, its trapped heart is released into the sky, pooling together to construct the Kingdom Hearts that the Organization plans to use to regain their hearts.

The Sea-Salt Trio

Roxas is placed under the tutelage of Axel, the Organization’s cynical member. Over daily post-mission rituals of eating sea-salt ice cream on the clock tower of Twilight Town, Axel’s emotional distance begins to break. Roxas’s innocence shows Axel what it genuinely feels like to have a heart again, creating a deep, unbreakable brotherhood.

The dynamic shifts when the Organization introduces a mysterious 14th member: Xion, a silent, dark-haired girl who can also wield the Keyblade. As Axel is deployed away to handle the coup at Castle Oblivion, Roxas and Xion form a bond, inviting her into their ice-cream ritual and cementing a trio.

Guardian in the Blindfold

While the trio spends their days in fleeting happiness, Riku is actively tracking them from the shadows. Having emerged from the Castle Oblivion, Riku is wearing a blindfold, which acts as a limiter to suppress his sensory overload after choosing to walk the Road to Dawn.

When DiZ and Naminé alert him that Sora’s memory reconstruction has stalled, Riku sets out to hunt down the source of the blockage. He intercepts Xion out in the worlds, effortlessly overpowering her and taking off her hood.

Upon seeing her face, Riku recognizes Kairi staring back at him. Riku delivers a truth to the girl: her Keyblade is fake, she is accidentally killing Roxas by siphoning his strength, and as long as she exists, Sora can never wake up. Rather than destroying her, Riku shows her mercy, giving her the space she needs to choose her own destiny.

The Truth of Xion

Xion is revealed to be an advanced human Replica engineered by the scientist Vexen as a parasitic fail-safe. Her true purpose was to act as a sponge, siphoning Sora’s leaking memories directly through her proximity to Roxas.

As Xion grows stronger, her appearance becomes increasingly shaped by the memories she absorbs, and her very existence drains Roxas’s power and identity. As long as Roxas and Xion exist, Sora can never awaken. Furthermore, Xemnas intends for the two vessels to eventually fight to the death, allowing the survivor to absorb the other and become an obedient Keyblade puppet for the Organization.

Final Sunset

Horrified by the revelation of her parasitic nature and desperate to return to Sora so he can be whole again, Xion defects from the Organization. Axel, torn between his orders from Xemnas and his love for his friends, is forced to hunt her down, dragging her back to the castle in a state of complete emotional collapse.

Realizing that her existence will inevitably kill Roxas, Xion forces a final confrontation against him on the Twilight Town clock tower. As the hood falls back, her appearance destabilizes. To Roxas, the girl standing before him begins to resemble Sora more than Xion, as the memories that shaped her start to unravel.

She transforms into a monstrous replica, begging Roxas to destroy her before Xemnas can absorb them both. In a heartbreaking duel, Roxas is forced to strike down his best friend.

As Xion dies in his arms, her body crystallizes and dissolves into pure light, returning her stolen memories to the sleeping Sora. Because she was a construct made entirely of memories, her death triggers a cruel erasure: everyone connected to her completely forgets she ever existed.

Shattered by a nameless grief he cannot fully articulate, Roxas goes rogue. Armed with two Keyblades – Oathkeeper and Oblivion (awakened by his and Xion’s grief) – he marches toward the Organization’s headquarters to tear down Kingdom Hearts.

Recognizing that Roxas is walking into a suicide trap that will permanently delay Sora’s awakening, Riku intercepts him in the streets of the World That Never Was. A high-stakes battle erupts. Roxas, fueled by raw grief, fiercely overwhelms Riku, knocking him to the ground and pinning him down.

Realizing that Roxas’s strength is too immense to be contained by normal means, Riku makes a sacrifice. To bring Roxas down and save Sora, Riku removes his blindfold and unleashes the residual darkness of Ansem lurking within his heart. The darkness explodes outward, physically transforming Riku’s own body into Ansem’s likeness.

The transformed Riku knocks Roxas unconscious. Backed by DiZ, Riku transports the captured Nobody back to a secret lab beneath Twilight Town. They wipe his memories of the Organization and insert his consciousness into a virtual simulation of Twilight Town. There, the young Nobody is left to live out a fabricated, peaceful summer vacation with simulated friends, completely unaware that in exactly seven days, his short life will come to an end.
