Apple has officially introduced the MacBook Neo during a special Apple event in New York City.

Hello, MacBook Neo

The new macOS laptop is powered by the A18 Pro chip, previously found only in iPhone 16 Pro models. A budget laptop from Apple is a rather unexpected move, especially one running a smartphone-class processor.

At a starting price of $599, MacBook Neo offers a 13-inch display, up to 16 hours of battery life, and a selection of four colorful finishes. Preorders are already live, and the device will arrive in stores on March 11, 2026.

The MacBook Neo features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a 2408 × 1506 resolution and up to 500 nits of brightness. Like other Apple displays, it supports over one billion colors, making text sharp and images vibrant.

However, the glossy panel may struggle slightly under direct sunlight despite performing well in most indoor lighting conditions.

The laptop is powered by the A18 Pro chip, previously used in iPhone 16 Pro devices. While it may not match the performance of Apple’s M-series chips for heavy workloads like video rendering, it offers plenty of power for everyday tasks such as browsing, document editing, and photo work.

Two configurations are available:

  • $599 model: 256 GB storage, no Touch ID
  • $699 model: 512 GB storage and Touch ID

Both models include 8 GB of RAM with no upgrade option.

Body, Keyboard, and a Fresh Color Lineup

The MacBook Neo features a full aluminum body, giving it the same premium feel Apple laptops are known for.

Input is handled by the Magic Keyboard and a large multi-touch trackpad. Apple also includes a dual-speaker system with Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos support, making the laptop suitable for streaming movies, listening to music, and video calls.

For calls and meetings, users get a 1080p FaceTime HD camera.

The color lineup is notably vibrant. Buyers can choose between:

  • Silver
  • Indigo
  • Blush
  • Citrus

Apple appears to be leaning into brighter consumer devices to stand out in a market dominated by gray and black laptops.

MacBook Neo Battery Life

Battery life is one of the strongest selling points of the MacBook Neo.

Apple claims the laptop can deliver:

  • Up to 16 hours of video streaming
  • Up to 11 hours of wireless browsing

A 20W USB-C charger is included in the box. While modest compared to many laptop chargers, the efficiency of the A18 Pro chip allows the device to maintain strong battery performance.

Apple Budget Laptop — What the MacBook Neo Means for Apple

With the MacBook Neo, Apple is pushing its laptops further into the budget market.

Historically, Apple has struggled to attract:

  • Students with limited budgets
  • Casual users who do not want to spend $1000+ on a laptop
  • First-time Mac buyers

Using the A18 Pro chip is likely a strategic decision. Apple already manufactures the chip in massive quantities for the iPhone lineup, which reduces production costs.

Since macOS runs on the same ARM architecture, Apple can reuse the chip instead of developing a completely new entry-level processor. This efficiency likely helped the company reach the $599 price point.

Is the MacBook Neo the Best Budget Laptop of 2026?

A $599 Mac laptop with an iPhone-class chip, vibrant display, and all-day battery life feels like a natural evolution of Apple’s strategy that began with the M1 MacBooks.

The price is the lowest Apple has ever offered for a Mac laptop. Combined with the efficiency of the A18 Pro chip, it may outperform many competing laptops in the same price bracket.

However, the real test will come once the device reaches users and reviewers.

What do you think? Could the MacBook Neo become the best budget laptop of 2026, and is the A18 Pro powerful enough for everyday computing? Let us know your thoughts.
