Helldivers 2

Release date:2024-02-08
Genre:Shooter
Developer:Arrowhead Game Studios

No surprise here, we suppose, as this is one of the greatest co-op shooter ever released.

Gear up and get ready to drop – it’s time to squash some bugs and wreck some robots. For Super Earth!

This is essentially Helldivers 2 in a nutshell. This sequel to a highly popular twin-stick shooter with friendly fire and pretty punishing difficulty changes things up a bit. Now it’s a third-person shooter, but the core gameplay remains. As a member of a team of up to four players, your task is to complete a bunch of objectives and not let your enemies overrun you.

If you need reinforcements or just want to shake things up for fun, you can call down the so-called Stratagems: special weapons and ordnance that’ll surely turn the tide of battle in your favor if used properly. Helldivers 2 is definitely a blast to play, so if you’re looking for a fun co-op shooter to try out with your friends, this is this year’s best choice.

Key features
  • Team up with up to three other Helldivers and get to squashing them bugs/wrecking them machines
  • Use powerful Stratagems to turn the tide of battle in your favor if things go wrong
  • Kill your teammates with friendly fire

Grand Theft Auto V

Release date:2015-04-14
Genre:Adventure
Developer:Rockstar North

No surprises here, either, we suppose.

GTA V remains the most popular item on the marketplace and for a good reason.

After all, it’s a fun crime story with three different protagonists, one crazier than the other (Trevor is particularly unhinged). Your job is to carry out a bunch of daring heists and the city of Los Santos and its whereabouts are your sandbox.

And then there’s the multiplayer component, Grand Theft Auto Online. Open-world exploration and general freedom make it one of the most interesting games to play with friends and strangers on the Internet. So, if you haven’t tried this one, make sure to make up for that before the release of GTA VI, planned for 2025.

Key features
  • Rule the city of Los Santos and its immediate surroundings
  • Play as three different characters
  • Get ready for the release of GTA VI

Terraria

Release date:2011-05-16
Genre:Adventure
Developer:Re-Logic

Notch’s hit game remains a staple of “best of” lists and not without a reason.

After all, Minecraft is the benchmark for all sorts of sandbox games.

At its core Minecraft is a survival game where you have to build and craft stuff, meet your character’s needs like food, water or rest, and fend off deadly creatures on the prowl for you. But that’s not really the point here.

See, Minecraft is a powerful tool for sandbox-style construction. You can use it to build virtual replicas of, say, real-world or fictional buildings and landmarks, for example. The possibilities are pretty much endless, so if you’re looking to become a virtual sculptor, this is the right tool for ya.

Key features
  • One of the best sandbox games on the market
  • And it’s a very good survival title, too
  • Perfect for virtual sculptors

Project Zomboid

Release date:2013-11-08
Genre:Indie
Developer:The Indie Stone

There’s been a couple of complex zombie survival sims.

Project Zomboid might as well be the most grueling out of them.

Here’s the thing: you’ll die at some point. There’s no escaping it. All you can do is postpone that for as long as you can. This won’t be easy, as zombies are most likely the least of your problems. Hunger, stress, boredom, fatigue – these will creep in when you least expect them.

There’s also a sandbox mode available and it’ll let you customize the game to your liking. Maybe you want them zombies to run faster? No problem, just choose the right option in the customization menu. Project Zomboid is one of the most intriguing survival games in years, so it’s no wonder it’s so popular on our marketplace.

Key features
  • Hardcore zombie survival sim
  • You can find out how long you will survive before your inevitable in-game demise
  • The sandbox mode lets you customize the gameplay to your liking

Fallout 4

Release date:2017-09-26
Genre:RPG
Developer:Bethesda Game Studios

This one stills rocks our charts as far as post-apocalyptic RPG games are concerned.

Fallout 4 is fun, pretty accessible, and very moddable, making it a popular choice among our users.

Fallout 4 takes you to the Commonwealth, a region covering Boston and certain parts of New England. You play as the Sole Survivor, the only inhabitant of Vault 111 still alive. Your spouse is killed and your son, Shaun, kidnapped by mysterious captors. This sets you on an epic journey through the nuclear wasteland that is the USA of the future.

The game offers an open-world environment which you can explore as you see fit. There’s a bunch of companions, including a dog named Dogmeat (a staple in the series), and you are able to construct settlements for various NPCs to live in. Yes, coupled with managing food production and defending them from random attacks. And then there’s mod support. All in all, it’s a great starting point for aspiring Fallout fans.

Key features
  • War, war never changes
  • But Fallout does from installment to installment
  • You can build settlements and stuff

7 Days to Die

Release date:2013-12-13
Genre:Adventure
Developer:The Fun Pimps

Throw in a bit of Minecraft. Throw in a bit of Project Zomboid.

Throw in tower defense. Then throw in a grenade and you’ll get 7 Days to Die.

Yeah, your goal here is to survive for as long as possible. This entails you looking for resources, crafting stuff, and building defenses to hold off waves of zombies which will inevitably come at you. Exploration also involves danger. Alright, them undead are sorta docile during the day, but they go super feral and crazy at night.

And once Blood Moon kicks in – and it does so every 7 in-game days – you’re in for a real onslaught. If you don’t prepare accordingly, you’re gonna get swarmed and overrun in a jiffy. As you can see, 7 Days to Die doesn’t pull any punches, either.

Key features
  • Minecraft (well, sorta) Project Zomboid tower defense
  • Prep well for Blood Moon or else face imminent defeat
  • Surviving here takes some serious skill

Rust

Release date:2018-02-08
Genre:Adventure
Developer:Facepunch Studios

Another survival title on this list, Rust is a game of a different kind.

Don’t worry, there are no zombies in there. Other players are a different story, though.

Rust is strictly multiplayer, so the main threat comes from interacting with others. This is also the factor which has the biggest impact on the game’s difficulty, making it a bit hard for newcomers to delve in the game. But if that doesn’t deter you, you’re in for a fun time!

You’ll get to fend off other players, wildlife, and vehicles driven by NPCs. You’ll get to collect all sorts of resources, craft stuff, raid enemy bases, and so on. It’s very fun once you get the gist of it, as proven by the game’s popularity on our marketplace and in general. If you’re into hardcore survival sims with a strong PvP focus, be sure to grab this one.

Key features
  • Hardcore PvP survival game
  • Team up with others for better chances of survival
  • Lots of stuff to craft using the resources you gather

And that’s all, folks! Naturally, these aren’t the only popular games on our marketplace, so be sure to check it out for more user favorites.
