Plenty of players of Nioh 3 end up regretting their character design once they see it under the game’s actual lighting. It is a common moment: you spend an hour adjusting every slider in the creation menu, launch into your first mission, and realize your supposed warrior looks out of place.

The good news is that Nioh 3 does not trap you in those first choices. You can edit your entire appearance later, including everything from face structure and hairstyle to undergarment color.

When Appearance Editing Becomes Available

You will not be able to make any changes right at the start. Full access to the appearance editor unlocks only after defeating the first major boss: Jakotsu-baba at Hamamatsu Castle Crucible.

Once she is defeated, the Eternal Rift becomes available. This area acts as your home base and includes several features that are unavailable during the opening sequence. One of those features is a mirror that opens the full appearance editor.

Nioh 3 Appearance Change: How to Access the Editor

Once you reach the Eternal Rift, you can follow these steps to modify your character’s look:

  • Travel to the Eternal Rift using fast travel from the world map
  • Enter the northernmost building that contains the Shrine
  • Go upstairs to the level with the blacksmith and hidden teahouse
  • Look for the tatami room in the corner near the illustration book
  • Interact with the mirror placed on a box with a cushion in front of it
  • On a controller, press RB or R1. On keyboard, press E

This will load the full character editor. You can adjust facial structure, body proportions, hairstyles, voice, and more.

There is also a character code system. You can import designs created by other players by entering a code in the Options menu.

Name Restrictions and Narrative Lock-In

Nioh 3 does not allow players to change their character’s name. The story locks you into the identity of Tokugawa Takechiyo.

Historically, this is the birth name of Tokugawa Iemitsu, who later became the third shogun. Since the plot is directly tied to this historical figure’s rise to power, the game prevents you from renaming your character.

What Other Players See Online

If you are concerned about online visibility, it helps to know that your in-game name is not shown in multiplayer features. When another player interacts with your Benevolent or Revenant Grave, they will see your PlayStation Network or Steam ID.

The name Tokugawa Takechiyo is not visible to others. The game uses your platform account to identify you during co-op or asynchronous interactions.
