If you need a VPN for India in 2026, the first thing to know is that several major providers no longer operate physical VPN servers inside the country. India’s cybersecurity rules require consumer VPN providers operating there to retain specified customer information, which pushed some privacy-focused services to move their Indian locations abroad.

That does not mean you cannot get an Indian IP address. Surfshark and ExpressVPN both still offer virtual Indian locations, where the server hardware is physically outside India while the connection is assigned an Indian IP.

Quick answer: Surfshark is the more value-focused option here, particularly if you need VPN access on many devices. ExpressVPN costs more in most direct-subscription comparisons but offers two virtual India locations and a large international network. Avast SecureLine and Kaspersky VPN should not be recommended for someone physically in India under their current availability policies.

What does a VPN actually do?

VPN stands for virtual private network. A consumer VPN creates an encrypted connection between your device and a VPN server, then routes your internet traffic through that server.

This can help protect traffic on shared or public networks, hide your normal public IP address from websites, and make your connection appear to come from the VPN server’s location.

A VPN does not automatically make your internet faster, compress all your traffic, eliminate lag, or guarantee access to every region-restricted service. Streaming platforms, games, websites, and other services can detect or block VPN connections, and their own terms still apply.

Surfshark: Best value-focused option

Surfshark is the strongest fit if the main goal is keeping the cost down while covering multiple devices. The service allows unlimited simultaneous connections, so one subscription can cover a PC, phone, tablet, and other supported devices without forcing you to choose which one stays connected.

For India, Surfshark currently lists 50 virtual Indian servers across two virtual locations. Connecting to one gives you an Indian IP address even though the underlying server infrastructure is outside India.

Surfshark also supports WireGuard, OpenVPN, and other modern protocols, along with features such as a kill switch and obfuscation. Its network currently spans more than 4,500 servers across 100 countries.

Best for: People who want an Indian IP address, use several devices, and care more about value than paying for the most premium VPN tier.

ExpressVPN: Strong premium alternative

ExpressVPN is the more premium option in this comparison. Its network currently covers 113 countries and 214 server locations worldwide.

For Indian IP addresses, ExpressVPN offers two virtual locations: India via Singapore and India via the UK. The physical servers are outside India, but the IP address presented to supported websites and services is registered for the selected Indian location.

ExpressVPN also offers automatic server-selection tools that take factors such as latency, download speed, and distance into account. That can be useful if you want privacy but do not specifically need an Indian IP.

Best for: Users who prioritize a large international server network and want a choice of two virtual Indian locations.

Which VPN has an Indian IP address?

Surfshark and ExpressVPN can both provide an Indian IP address in 2026, but they do it through virtual locations rather than physical servers operating inside India.

VPNIndian IPIndia server typeCurrent India status
SurfsharkYesVirtualAvailable
ExpressVPNYesVirtual via Singapore or UKAvailable
Avast SecureLineNo current Indian server accessN/AUnavailable while physically in India
Kaspersky VPNNot a current recommendationN/A for new India usersSales/download/activation suspended in India

Can a VPN reduce gaming lag?

Usually, a VPN adds another network hop between you and the game server, so it can increase latency rather than reduce it.

There are exceptions. If your ISP uses a poor route to a particular game server, a VPN may route the connection differently and occasionally lower ping or reduce route-related instability. That depends entirely on the ISP, VPN server, game server, and physical distance involved.

For MMO players, choose a VPN server close to the game server and test latency before committing to it. A VPN should not be treated as a guaranteed anti-lag tool.

Using a VPN for ordinary purposes is legal in India. A VPN does not make otherwise illegal activity lawful, and individual online services can still restrict VPN use under their own terms.

The important regulatory change came from CERT-In’s cybersecurity directions. Consumer VPN service providers covered by those rules must register and retain specified subscriber information for five years or longer after a customer cancels or withdraws registration. The required information includes validated customer names, service periods, allocated IP addresses, registration details, contact information, and the stated purpose for using the service.

Those requirements are why some VPN companies stopped operating physical servers in India rather than changing their no-logs policies.

What about Avast and Kaspersky?

Avast SecureLine VPN

Avast should be removed from an India-focused recommendation list. Avast says SecureLine VPN and its other VPN features are unavailable while a user is physically in India, and access to Indian servers has also been removed.

Kaspersky VPN

Kaspersky is also no longer appropriate as a recommendation for a new VPN customer in India. Kaspersky says sales of its VPN have been suspended in India and that the service is not available for new download or activation there. Existing paid subscriptions may continue until their subscription period ends.

How cheap can a VPN be?

VPN pricing varies constantly with subscription length, promotions, region, and seller. Longer subscriptions generally reduce the effective monthly cost, but the cheapest headline deal is not automatically the best option.

Check renewal terms, supported devices, server locations, refund conditions, and whether the subscription actually works in the country where you plan to activate and use it.

For India specifically, the key question is not simply which VPN is cheapest. Make sure the provider currently works in India, offers the server location you need, and has privacy terms you are comfortable with before paying for a long subscription.
