Stranger Than Heaven Reveals Story, Combat System, Cast, and Five-City Setting

During the latest showcase, RGG Studio has shared a major update on Stranger Than Heaven, revealing the game’s setting, story, a brand new combat system, and cast.

The game is expected to launch this winter and is coming to Xbox Game Pass day one.

Stranger Than Heaven Storyline – Yakuza Prequel With a Hint of Music Management

The story follows Makoto Daito, a mixed-heritage outcast trying to make a name for himself in a rapidly changing Japan. Over the decades, he rises from showbusiness figure with underworld ties to the founder of the Tojo Clan.

Storyline will span over 50 years and will take players to five different cities, showcasing the evolution of Japan.

The most important chapters will likely take place in Sotenbori and Kamurocho. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has revealed that showbiz management is going to be a big part of the story, and Masayoshi Yokoyama, the head of the studio, has hinted that the “tremendous secret” will be revealed during the Kamurocho era.

Show Biz Management – Side Content in New Clothes

If you played any Like a Dragon game, you know the side content often outshines the “main dish”, both in length and attention to detail.

Stranger Than Heaven appears to follow in the footsteps of the mainline entries, offering an expanded management simulator. Makoto Daito will become a showman, deciding on the structure of each show, handling the promotion, and producing the performances themselves.

In the Yakuza series, you often go around the town recruiting grunts for your brawler group/biker gang/ship crew. This time, you’ll build up an army of musicians and singers (including Ado!) and aim to become the most prominent music manager in Japan’s history.

What’s more, Makoto can find music in everyday life and memorize the sounds as ideas for future compositions. By collaborating with composers, players will be able to create brand new tracks (and probably hear them performed).

Minigames will also return, and while the trailer focused on new additions of arm wrestling and dice games, the older ones (like mahjong, beloved by everyone) will surely make their appearance.

Brand New Combat System

Stranger Than Heaven introduces a new combat system, in which players will control the left and right sides of the character independently. Holding the buttons will charge up attacks, while pulling both triggers will unleash a tackle attack.

Hand-to-hand combat is only part of Makoto’s arsenal. The game will feature many weapons, such as knives, mallets, hammers, and blades. There will be an expanded weapons upgrade system.

Creators promise a variety of unique battle scenarios, such as battles inside high-speed vehicles, cinematic finishing techniques, and special attacks that can be performed in specific situations.
