LEGO is one of the most powerful and long-lasting toy brands in the world, maintaining its relevance decade after decade. The building blocks of creativity that the Danish company has been delivering since the 1930s have eventually found their way into the digital medium as far back at the 90s.
It wasn’t until the past decade or so that LEGO-based games have really hit their stride. We’re here to bring several noteworthy LEGO video games to your attention.
What is LEGO all about in the first place?
Before we move on to discussing the games themselves, it may be a good idea to establish a common ground.
The most popular product are the Lego System bricks, which come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, colours, and functions. Although simple in function, they can be used to create incredible constructions, even life-sized or bigger. Often they also come in themed sets, such as pirate ships, Medieval castles, or LEGO versions of popular movies, like Star Wars or Pirates of the Caribbean. There are also other lines of Lego, like Technic.
It replaces the Basic bricks with ones better for older audiences and for creating working mechanisms, like car models with working gears and hydraulic elements, for example. Or Duplo, which has large, rounded bricks, safer for small children. As for the games, they are almost universally based on the System line, reflecting its universal nature. That said, let’s talk games.
What is great about the LEGO games, is that most of them are available for split-screen mode. You can enjoy playing these amazing games with your friends or children, the latter will be especially interested in such entertainment as everyone knows that kids love LEGO. These games will help to introduce some of the best movies, books and comic book stories to your young ones and bring some nostalgia tear to more than one eye!

LEGO Bricktales
Release year: | 2022 |
Genre: | Puzzle |
Developer: | ClockStone Studios |
Original or licensed? | Licensed |
Now here’s an interesting one. LEGO Bricktales is unlike any other game on this list: it’s an atmospheric puzzle affair with tons of charm.
Your in-game grandfather has summoned you to help him rebuild his dilapidated amusement park. So you embark on an epic journey with your robotic little buddy to solve all sorts of puzzles along the way and restore the park to its former glory. Construction mechanics are intuitive and the solutions clever, it’s definitely a lovely experience that captures the joy of building LEGO sets or just your own creations.
LEGO Bricktales also features the Sandbox mode where you can build all the stuff you can using the tools at your disposal. You can unlock more bricks along the way as you progress through the story. If you’re looking for a wonderfully relaxing, cute puzzle game, this one is a fantastic title to consider.
And if you’re itching for more, you can check out LEGO Builder’s Journey, a similar puzzle adventure. Its PC version uses Nvidia RTX, which makes the game look amazing.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
Release year: | 2022 |
Genre: | Action-adventure |
Developer: | Traveller’s Tales |
Original or licensed? | Licensed |
Ah, yes, the ultimate LEGO Star Wars experience. The Skywalker Saga combines all nine films into a one, huge game filled to the brim with excitement and hilarious adventures. Traveller’s Tales did it again!
The game takes some new features introduced in LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, such as over-the-shoulder camera for characters using blasters or the game hub not being a single place, but instead a couple of various places that you can freely explore, and expands upon them, offering a fresh experience unlike the previous games in the series (although the gameplay is still familiar). Aside from forty-five levels set across all nine movies, there are short pre-levels before each story mission, and you can explore the hubs in-between the levels. Random encounters are also possible, but you can totally ignore them.
As usual, the game has a fantastic drop-in drop-out co-op mode. While you can’t play it online, you can use Steam’s Remote Play Together feature. All in all, it’s a fantastic game with fresh gameplay ideas. It’s a great remake of the previous games in the LEGO Star Wars series, so if you’re looking for more fun in more or less the same vein, look no further.

LEGO Legacy: Heroes Unboxed
Release year: | 2020 |
Genre: | Turn-based strategy |
Developer: | Gameloft |
Original or licensed? | Licensed |
If you adore LEGO minifigs, you’ll love this game. This zany turn-based strategy-meets-some-role-playing-elements is delightfully absurd and super fun to play, not to mention tons of nostalgia!
The game takes you to the city of Piptown where you can create a team of five minifigures and then embark on daring campaigns full of hilarious battles. You can also duke it out with other players on the arena. As you explore the game world, you unlock new characters and upgrade the existing ones. Of course, each minifigure boasts its own abilities and it is up to you to mix and match these units to build a well-performing team that can take on any challenge.
It’s a family-friendly title full of weirdness and good natured, tongue-in-cheek humor that’s a staple of pretty much all LEGO games. If you want something to help you relive childhood nostalgia, Heroes Unboxed is a perfect pick for that purpose.

Lego Worlds
Release year: | 2017 |
Genre: | Sandbox |
Developer: | Traveller's Tales |
Original or licensed? | Original |
LEGO Worlds is as pure as a LEGO experience can get without the need to own a huge warehouse filled with bricks.
The game is a sandbox one, which means it’s content with giving you a world to explore, tools to play around with, and leaving you alone to your own devices.
It’s not out of place to liken this game to Minecraft, because it’s more or less that, only with less modability and actual Lego bricks instead of colourful cubes. LEGO Worlds allows you to build anything you normally could piece together in real life.

Lego The Force Awakens
Release year: | 2016 |
Genre: | Action-adventure |
Developer | TT Fusion |
Original or licensed? | Licensed |
Star Wars and LEGO games appear inseparable. When The Force Awakens came to the cinemas it was only a matter of time before a corresponding video game was released.
The Force Awakens in LEGO form is divided into chapters, which use the movies’ scenes as the basis and expand on them, to make them more fun (and funny) to play through.
There are ten chapters, plus a prologue and an epilogue. It’s plenty of content to play through, even before you complete the levels with different characters to discover new secrets. Much like every other franchise-based LEGO game, it’s a great way for children too young to watch the film to experience the story.

Lego Jurassic World
Release year: | 2015 |
Genre: | Action-adventure |
Developer | TT Fusion |
Original or licensed? | Licensed |
The LEGO version of Jurassic World has a misleading title, since it actually covers the first four movies of the franchise.
So you’ll get to meet a LEGO Ian Malcolm endorsing going faster, and maybe you’ll even get to wreck the Spinosaurus, unlike the T. Rex in Jurassic Park 3.
One of the coolest features of the game is that, in addition to a huge gallery of playable human characters, there are playable dinos as well. You can therefore run about as a velociraptor, for example. If you love the whimsical survival horror atmosphere of Jurassic Park movies, you’re bound to enjoy this.

Lego City Undercover
Release year: | 2013 |
Genre: | Action-adventure |
Developer | TT Fusion |
Original or licensed? | Original |
If you want to prepare your children for a future time spent with the Grand Theft Auto series, this is the way.
LEGO City Undercover is a family friendly introduction to virtual urban open-worlds and crime that’s inevitably going on in the back alleys.
The main character is a cop called Chase McCain who returns to LEGO City and has to deal with growing criminal and personal crises connected to his previous case. It’s surpisingly quite dense story-wise for a LEGO game.

Lego Harry Potter years 1-4, 5-7
Release year: | 2010 & 2011 |
Genre: | Action-adventure |
Developer | Traveller's Tales |
Original or licensed? | Licensed |
The staying power of the Harry Potter series is undeniable. It’s been, and is going to be around for years to come, many a child’s point of entry into the fantasy genre.
It’s a perfect child-friendly franchise to be turned into a LEGO game. So it’s no wonder it’s been done.
Naturally, there are spells the characters can cast, accessible through the spell wheel once unlocked. There are also potions, which are as integral to the gameplay, just like spells. It has also aged better than the original Harry Potter games.

There’s nothing like the pulpy exploits of an adventurous archaeologist, other than the excellent original soundtrack composed by John Williams.
This LEGO game tones down many of the gruesome and memorable scenes from the original Indiana Jones and makes them much funnier.
This time, the mission hub is the Barnett College where doctor Jones teaches between his adventures. There are over eighty different characters to play as, including Han Solo and Santa Claus. You can also create your own character in Free Play.

Release year: | 2013, 2016, 2017 |
Genre: | Action-adventure |
Developer | Traveller's Tales |

A bundle of three Marvel-themed LEGO games covers a large portion of the Marvel universe, both the comic book and cinematic one.
LEGO Marvel’s Avengers follows the first two Avengers movies in addition to several Phase Two titles. On the other hand, the Super Heroes line deals with more or less original storylines.
Between the three games, there’s a humongous number of playable characters and variants thereof. Many of them are lesser known due to not being featured in any notable cartoon or movie.

Release year: | 2008, 2012, 2014 |
Genre: | Action-adventure |

If you enjoyed the LEGO Batman movie, be prepared for more of the same (roughly).
It’s three games focused on the Caped Crusader and his exploits in the DC universe, with plenty of appearances from other more or less famous heroes and villains from comic books and movies.
There are dozens of characters to play as and plenty of iconic locations. As usual, it’s over-the-top like any other LEGO game. The third installment even takes the story to space, including Lantern Corps Planets.

Lego Lord of the Rings
Release year: | 2013 |
Genre: | Action-adventure |
Developer | Traveller's Tales |
Original or licensed? | Licensed |
A more toned down experience than many other Lego games, LEGO The Lord of the Rings is ALMOST as long as the full re-watch of all three parts of Peter Jackson’s movie adaptation in their extended version.
LEGO The Lord of the Rings will let you experience the entire journey from start to finish, albeit in a humorous, family-friendly manner, like other LEGO video games. A nice feature is that the characters can add new items and weaponry to their inventory, enhancing the typical LEGO gameplay with some role-playing elements.

Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga
Release year: | 2007 |
Genre: | Action-adventure |
Developer | Traveller's Tales |
Original or licensed? | Licensed |
If you love Star Wars, you’ll love The Complete Saga, too.
It’s a recreation of the original saga (Episodes I – VI), infused with iconic LEGO humor
The Complete Saga is in fact a joint version of the previous two games (2005’s LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game and 2006’s LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy) with some graphical updates, new and redesigned levels and some other features. Naturally, there is The Skywalker Saga from 2022, but you can totally pick this one up as well, since it’s a different take on the iconic scenes from the movies.
