Arjan Brussee, the co-founder of Guerilla Games and a former tech director at Epic, announced the works on an alternative to engines such as Unreal or Unity.

By VGC transcription:

“No one is currently making an engine that is fully European-hosted, built by Europeans, and complies with European rules and guidelines.”

What this means for the future remains to be seen, but the project, called The Immense Engine, does sound like an interesting prospect for studios who would like a good accessible option that isn’t US-bound.

The project is said to be taking AI solutions into consideration from the get-go, addressing the shifting nature of game development that’s already being embraced by multiple major publishers. Brussee mentions AI agents as expected productivity boosters.

Adoption of genAI and its offspring tend to be controversial topic among both developers and customers, this course of action might yield unexpected results, but it is too early to tell whether It will affect the production in any meaningful manner.

There is no timeframe provided in the available sources to suggest where The Immense Engine would become available, so it’s probably reasonable not to expect release this year.
