Superhot
Release date: | 2016-02-25 |
Genre: | Action & Shooter |
Developer: | SUPERHOT Team |
Superhot was, well, super hot back in the old days of 2016, when it saw its full release. Developed as an entry to a 7 Day FPS Challenge, a contest for aspiring and established developers to create an interesting FPS game in a week, it quickly found people interested in it thanks to a unique gameplay mechanic
See, in Superhot time moves at normal rate only when your character does. Stand still and time slows down so much that it might as well be halted completely. Which means that you can watch bullets coming at you, and your own will only reach their intended targets when you stop standing around. It fun, it’s fairly challenging, it’s as much as puzzle game as it is a shooter.
Well worth getting, if you don’t have it already.
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
Release date: | 2014-10-14 |
Genre: | Action & Shooter |
Developer: | 2K Australia |
Borderlands was a fun sci-fi romp with diverse guns and wacky characters. Borderlands 2 added a rather charismatic villain, Handsome Jack, to the mix. And all was good in the world of Pandora.
The Pre-Sequel is more or less a retroactive interlude, developed after Borderlands 2, but taking place between 1 and 2. It speaks at length about Jack’s rise to power, from the perspective of a captured operative, Athena, interrogated by the first game’s playable characters now acting as NPCs.
As far as game gimmicks are concerned, the Pre-Sequel adds things like low-gravity combat and laser weapons, so it has its share of gameplay upgrades in addition to a new story about familiar characters. Good times.
Battlefield 4
Release date: | 2013-10-31 |
Genre: | Action & Shooter |
Developer: |
Battlefield 4 is Call of Duty’s less frantic older brother, and Battlefield 4 is a decent example of that.
Although the campaign is there, and is a good way to get accustomed to the game’s new systems like improved bullet physics or tagging enemies, but as always with Battlefields, the core of the experience is in the multiplayer.
Matches in Battlefield 4 can handle up to 64 players and the game even reintroduced the Commander Mode, providing one player on the team with a view of the strategic map and the ability to give other players tactical orders.
Despite it being five years old at this point, Battlefield 4 remains a great team-based shooter
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Release date: | 2010 |
Genre: | FPS |
Developer: | Treyarch |
Take a trip back in time to the Cold War, and become the CIA operative called Alex Mason, a name that could stand alongside Jack Reacher or Sam Fisher and you wouldn’t bat an eye.
CoD: BlOps has a very politically charged singleplayer campaign, which will have you prevent an expansive biological attack on the United States, engineered by, of course, Soviet sleeper agents.
On the multiplayer side, Black Ops is as much of a twitch shooter as everyone has come to expect from the franchise, with improvements to the killstreaks and loadouts relative to the previous entry in the series.
Curiously, the game even has a split-screen multiplayer, something regrettably rare in modern gaming. Give it a shot, you’ll like it.
Cities: Skylines
Release date: | 2015-03-10 |
Genre: | Economy |
Developer: | Colossal Order Ltd. |
Cities: Skylines is another game which lets you build a city from scratch only to see it devolve into unmanageable madness before you even get to build monuments commemorating your benevolence and wisdom. Rude.
Cities: Skylines is a brilliant city-planning game originally launched in 2015 for PC and later even ported over to Xbox One and PlayStation 4. With several large expansion packs adding elements allowing the players to further flesh out their cities, Skylines can easily rival classics like SimCity.
And if you get tired of the city, you can always let disasters from a DLC ravage it in a very satisfying way.
Rocket League
Release date: | 2015-07-07 |
Genre: | Race |
Developer: | Psyonix, Inc. |
Rocket League is a streamlined and flashy spiritual successor to the same developer’s Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, a game with the best and the most informative title in the history of interactive entertainment.
Rocket League is football, but with cars and smaller teams. Additionally the ball is large, metallic and explodes upon scoring a goal, while the cars have multiple thrusters and jets attached allowing them to jump and perform aerial acrobatics.
It’s a game where skill is of utmost importance, and there is a lot to learn. But when you get the hang of the controls, it turns into something that not only looks amazing as you watch it, but it feels amazing as you play it.
Fallout: New Vegas
Release date: | 2010-10-21 |
Genre: | Adventure |
Developer: | Obsidian Entertainment |
Fallout: New Vegas launched in is a little shoddy state, as far as technical aspect were concerned, but it didn’t take long for people to realise that it’s perhaps the best Fallout game since 1998.
Built on the skeleton provided by Bethesda’s Fallout 3 it builds an interesting and politically fraught Mojave desert, with several factions competing for control.
Go anywhere, do anything, change the political landscape of the area forever by being the one person who could tip the scales. New Vegas doesn’t look pretty, but it a testament to Obsidian Entertainments skills as creators of narrative-focused cRPGs.
Darkest Dungeon
Release date: | 2016-01-19 |
Genre: | Indie |
Developer: | Red Hook Studios |
If you played XCOM and thought “gee, my soldiers have it too easy. They should start suffering from mental problems” then Darkest Dungeon is for you. You also probably have sadistic tendencies.
Darkest Dungeon is a game taking place in an exceptionally gloomy setting, and it translates to gameplay mechanic which devoted entirely to giving your warriors quirks and disorders which in various ways inhibit their ability to explore dungeons in the most effective way. You could heal them, of course, but that takes time, money, and removes them from your roster for the therapy’s duration. Can you afford to do it? Can you affords not to?
It’s worth noting, that DD looks very stylish, with beautifully drawn 2D sprites. Or rather: very nicely drawn horrible things.
Far Cry 3
Release date: | 2012-11-28 |
Genre: | Adventure |
Developer: | Ubisoft Montreal, Massive Entertainment, and Ubisoft Shanghai |
Far Cry 3 is when Ubisoft decided they struck gold and turned the franchise (originally created by Crytek) into open world mayhem simulators that are now recognizable at a glance.
In FC3 you play as Jason Brody, a guy barely into his twenties, who, through numerous unlucky circumstances finds himself fighting a band of modern day pirates.
It’s a remarkably pretty game, and it’s antagonist, Vaas has become one of fan favourite, prophesising what would happen to Ubisoft’s games. Gameplay-wise, it gives you a huge island to explore, plenty of wildlife to hunt for upgrades, plenty of bad guys to kill to XP, and even a progression system.
It’s very fun, even if the protagonist is something of a tool.
Portal 2
Release date: | 2011-04-18 |
Genre: | Adventure |
Developer: | Valve |
How do you follow-up one of the best and most beloved puzzle games in memory? Valve had an impossible task ahead of them, and although they don’t top the original, they prove with Portal 2 that they were fully committed to providing the next best thing anyway.
Portal 2 continues the story of Chell and the passive-aggressive AI GLaDOS, but adds a second robotic voice to the mix, Wheatley. The originally affable new guy through some shenanigans quickly becomes unhinged, turning into the primary antagonist of the game.
Curiously enough, Valve decided to include a dedicated two-player co-op campaign with unique maps, with both players controlling a robot (Atlas and P-Body) through a number of puzzles designed specifically for them. Obviously, it turns out to be highly entertaining.
The story ends
