The Wolf Among Us

Release date:2013-10-11
Genre:Adventure
Developer:Telltale Games

Set in the 80s, The Wolf Among Us serves as a prequel to the Fables series by Bill Willingham. You play as Bigby Wolf. Once the Big Bad Wolf, now he’s the sheriff of Fabletown, a place in Manhattan where fairytale folk live. A string of mysterious murders rocks the community and it is up to you to investigate the matter.

The game is a typical Telltale affair. It’s a simple adventure title where you walk around, inspect the environment, and talk to characters. There’s a whole load of quick-time events in here as well, as usual. The choices you make during conversations and your performance in the QTEs has an impact on how the story turns out later on.

Just like other Telltale games, it’s episodic in nature, although at this point you don’t have to worry about waiting for the next chapter to drop. It’s definitely one of the most unique games based on one of the most unusual of DC Comics. If such stuff is your jam, be sure to give The Wolf Among Us a shot.

Key features
  • An episodic tale based on one of the most unusual DC comic books
  • The focus here is on the narrative
  • There are QTEs in here as well
  • The choices you make have an impact on the future events

Injustice 2

Release date:2017-11-30
Genre:Action
Developer:

If you wanted a good button masher with a superhero theme, Injustice 2 is a great pick. This fighting game pits various characters, such as Superman and Batman, against each other. Who’s going to be better? Well, it depends on who’s better at pressing keys at random!

Story-wise, Injustice 2 is about a new group of supervillains known as The Society. Evil Brainiac also appears, but it turns out that Superman in fact is the primary villain here, which is a continuation of the story from the previous game. Expect various twists and two different endings, as well as getting to play as several characters. And that’s just the single-player campaign!

Naturally, the most important part of the game is playing against others. There’s plenty of customization options here, inspired by RPGs and online shooters. You can choose from twenty-eight different fighters, with another ten available as DLCs. There’s also a bunch of the so-called “premier skins” which turn the characters from the in-game roster into others from the DC Comics Universe. All in all, Injustice 2 is one of the best DC games on the market. Be sure to check it out.

Key features
  • Excellent customization options
  • Dozens of available superheroes and supervillains
  • Two different endings in the single-player campaign
  • Obviously, it’s not as violent as Mortal Kombat, which might be a plus

Batman: Arkham City

Release date:2012-09-07
Genre:Adventure
Developer:Rocksteady Studios

Batman: Arkham City is very much one of the greatest action-adventure games ever made. The sequel to the critically acclaimed Arkham Asylum, this one pits the Caped Crusader against all sorts of thugs and supervillains in the titular super-prison.

Arkham City is an open-world game, meaning you have a great degree of freedom in your exploration. You can complete both main and side missions, use a wide variety of upgradeable gadgets – some returning, some new – and enjoy the excellent “Freeflow” combat system the Arkham series is notable for. Completing the game in 100% will take you about forty hours.

And once you’re done with the main campaign, you can grab more DLCs, including a separate collection of heist-based missions where you play as Catwoman, and a bunch of other levels dedicated to other superheroes in the world of Batman. There’s probably no better superhero action-adventure game than this one. Excellent gameplay, visuals and atmosphere make Arkham City a real gem.

Key features
  • One of the greatest action-adventure games of all time
  • Excellent atmosphere and design
  • Plenty of Bat-gadgets to utilize
  • Lots of stealthy options

LEGO DC Super-Villains

Release date:2018-10-16
Genre:Adventure
Developer:TT Games

When you see Traveller’s Tales and LEGO in one sentence, you pretty much know what to expect. And yeah, gameplay-wise LEGO DC Super-Villains is very similar to other brick-inspired games by the studio. Still, this one lets you play as a super-villain!

And a customizable one at that. You get to create your own character at the start of the game and they later become a part of the evil syndicate featuring the likes of Lex Luthor and the like. Soon enough, however, an evil counterpart of the Justice League from another dimension arrives. You’ll need to kick their LEGO butts, of course.

The gameplay of LEGO DC Super-Villains is very much like other games in the series. You run around, build stuff, solve various puzzles using the abilities possessed by the characters on your team, unlock and collect tons of items, and cause unspeakable mayhem. The game is fully voice-acted – an interesting change from the usually mumbled dialogues – and full of zany, lighthearted humor Traveller’s Tales’ LEGO titles are known for. Grab it if you’re feeling villainous today.

Key features
  • You can create your own supervillain
  • It features a co-op mode for two players, just like other LEGO games by Traveller’s Tales
  • Your task: stop the evil version of the Justice League from another dimension
  • Full voice acting

LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes

Release date:2012-06-22
Genre:Adventure
Developer:Traveller's Tales

This is what happens when you want to make an Arkham game, but mixed with LEGO bricks. This is what LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is all about.

A sequel to the first LEGO Batman game, DC Super Heroes is an open-world action-adventure title which further expands the series’ universe with characters outside of the Bat-verse. Lex Luthor and the Joker join forces in a nefarious new scheme, so Batman and his allies need to team up with the Justice League to stop the super-baddies. By the way, this is the first Traveller’s Tales’ LEGO game with voiced dialogues instead of mumbling and grunting.

Gameplay-wise, you get to explore Gotham City freely, solving puzzles and unlocking new characters. You can complete both main and side missions. There are returning and new Batsuits that you can utilize in order to complete your objectives. All in all, it’s one of the most interesting DC games around, especially if you’re looking for a title for younger superhero fans.

Key features
  • A LEGO game by Traveller’s Tales – what else is there to add?
  • Okay, it’s a bit like a LEGO version of the Arkham series
  • It features a co-op mode for two players
  • It also boasts full voice acting

DC Universe Online

Release date:2011-11-02
Genre:MMORPG
Developer:Dimensional Ink Games

While definitely not a WoW killer, DC Universe Online still is one of the best MMORPGs around. Even better is the fact that it’s a free-to-play game!

DC Universe Online lets you create your very own superhero and embark on epic quests to save the world alongside the most iconic DC characters. Heck, you can actually become one of the supervillains. The choice is up to you!

You will get to explore various iconic locations from the comic books, too. DC Universe Online has received numerous DLCs known as Episodes, which introduce new missions and tons of other content. So, if you’re looking for a great MMORPG, this one might be a great pick.

DC Universe Online is a free-to-play game.

Key features
  • An MMO with DC’s superheroes and supervillains
  • You can create your own character and join one of the two available factions
  • Iconic characters from the comic books are also present here – you can fight alongside or against them
  • Lots of additional content

Batman: The Enemy Within

Release date:2017-08-08
Genre:Adventure
Developer:Telltale Games

A sequel to Batman: The Telltale Series, The Enemy Within improves upon its predecessor in pretty much every aspect.

This episodic adventure game plays like any other Telltale title. You play as Batman/Bruce Wayne. The key aspect of The Enemy Within is its branching narrative with plenty of choices that you can make along the way, which has an impact on future events. The game also features QTE-based action sequences.

Still, probably the greatest thing about this one is its portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime. Heck, you can even (WARNING: MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD!) prevent him from becoming the super-villain altogether! (END OF SPOILER)

All in all, The Enemy Within is a great pick if you love narrative-driven games. If you’re a fan of Telltale Games, you’ll very much enjoy it.

Key features
  • Another episodic adventure game by Telltale Games
  • Much better than its predecessor
  • One of the best stories about the Joker
  • As usual, your choices matter here

Batman: The Video Game

Release date:1989-11-22
Genre:Action
Developer:Sunsoft

The 1989 Batman movie received a bunch of video game adaptations. We’ve picked the NES one, since it’s the best of these and one of the best Batman games of all time.

While it has little relation to the actual plot of the movie, the NES version of Batman: The Video Game still has been very well-received. It’s a platform game where you have to complete five incredibly difficult levels and face the Joker to end his evil machinations once and for all.

One of the most interesting things about this title is the fact that Batman can perform wall jumps. You can also use three projectile-based weapon types in order to defeat the baddies, including some minor villains from the DC Universe. Yeah, it’s an oldie, but goodie. If you ever get a chance to give it a shot, do it.

Key features
  • Five levels to complete
  • Wall jumps
  • Three projectile-based weapons that you can use
  • It’s pretty difficult, so you should expect a challenge

DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos

Release date:2023-03-10
Genre:Action
Developer:PHL Collective

Now here’s an unusual DC-based game. Sure, you get to play as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, but it’s all very cutesy and cartoony!

Mr. Mxyzptlk strikes again! This time, he wants to turn the town of Happy Harbor into his personal Metropolis. The Justice League needs to stop him. This evil plot must not come to fruition!

Justice League: Cosmic Chaos is an action-adventure game where you get to pick your superhero – each with their own playstyle – and complete various missions. You’ll face various supervillains, including Starro the Conqueror, Bizarro, and a couple of others. There’s even a co-operative mode for two players, which means you can have a friend of yours join your efforts. Definitely a good pick, if you don’t mind its cartoony visual style.

Key features
  • Cutesy visuals
  • Plenty of unlockables
  • Several superheroes to play as
  • A co-op mode for two players

The Death and Return of Superman

Release date:1994
Genre:Action
Developer:Blizzard Entertainment

Last but not least, another oldie, but goodie. It’s definitely very interesting to see the somewhat humble beginnings of Blizzard Entertainment, before the times of StarCraft, Warcraft, and Diablo.

The Death and Return of Superman is a game where you play as the titular character (there are actually five Supermen to choose from) and your task is to kick the butts of all the baddies that are on screen. There’s a couple of different moves and abilities that you can employ for the purpose of defeating the enemies. Flying is also required at certain points.

Okay, it’s nothing out of the ordinary, but it’s a very decent superhero beat ‘em up that you might want to give a try if you ever get your hands on a Super NES (the better version, it seems) and a copy of this game.

Key features
  • A beat ‘em up based on The Death and Return of Superman comics
  • Five Supermen as playable characters
  • Different moves and abilities available, including flying
  • It’s a very decent game, especially the Super NES version

And there you have it: the top ten DC Universe-based games currently available on the market. Most of them are pretty recent titles which you won’t have any trouble playing. So, if you feel like doing some superhero (or super-villain) stuff, be sure to check them out!
