Honeycomb: The World Beyond launches on September 8, 2026, and at first glance it seems easy to put it into the increasingly enormous box labeled “sci-fi survival crafting.”

Alien planet. Check.

Resources. Check.

Base building. Check.

Strange creatures wandering around while you scan everything like somebody gave Subnautica’s protagonist a research grant. Also check.

Then the bioengineering starts.

Honeycomb lets you crossbreed alien plants and manipulate animal DNA to create new biological variations. You are not simply surviving on another planet. You are studying its ecosystem and deliberately changing it.

That is a considerably more interesting science experiment.

What is Honeycomb: The World Beyond?

Credit: Frozen Way

Honeycomb: The World Beyond is a single-player sci-fi survival adventure set on the alien planet Sota7.

You play as Hennessy, a bioengineer working for EON Corp who travels to Sota7 in search of knowledge that could help secure humanity’s future.

That mission means the game is built around more than gathering wood and producing increasingly expensive storage boxes.

Hennessy is a scientist.

The planet is the laboratory.

Everything moving around inside that laboratory may or may not appreciate the arrangement.

The real hook is bioengineering

This is the feature that separates Honeycomb from the enormous survival-crafting crowd.

Players can study organisms and experiment with their biological properties.

Plants can be crossbred to combine useful characteristics. Animal DNA can be manipulated to trigger physical changes.

That turns alien wildlife into more than scenery, enemies, or a source of crafting materials.

You are trying to understand how this ecosystem works, then using that knowledge to produce new results.

It is a good fit for the setting because Hennessy’s profession finally matters mechanically. Honeycomb is not simply telling you that the protagonist happens to be a bioengineer while handing her the same stone axe everyone else uses.

The science is part of the game.

Exploring Sota7

Sota7 is built around multiple biomes, open landscapes, underground caverns, unfamiliar vegetation, and alien creatures.

Exploration feeds the research loop.

You scan flora and fauna, gather samples and resources, find new environments, and learn what can actually be useful once you return to your laboratory.

Creatures do not all exist solely to sprint at the player from 200 meters away. Some may tolerate your presence, while others are considerably less enthusiastic about the visiting scientist poking around their habitat.

That should make the biological angle much more convincing. This is supposed to feel like an ecosystem you are entering rather than a shooting gallery decorated with alien plants.

Labs, crafting, and base building

Honeycomb still has the familiar survival infrastructure underneath its stranger ideas.

You gather resources, craft equipment, construct a base, establish laboratories, and prepare for longer expeditions.

The difference is what that infrastructure supports.

A laboratory is not merely a prettier workbench. It is where the game’s bioengineering fantasy becomes useful.

Base building therefore serves exploration and research rather than existing as a completely separate creative mode.

If the loop works, expeditions should keep feeding discoveries back into the lab, while research makes future expeditions more productive.

That is much closer to being an alien-field-scientist simulator than another game about having 94 units of iron and somehow still needing more iron.

Who should play Honeycomb?

Credit: Frozen Way

Honeycomb looks most interesting for players who enjoy survival games primarily because they let you enter strange places and gradually understand how they work.

If your favorite part of Subnautica was scanning everything that moved rather than stabbing it, this is especially easy to keep an eye on.

The bioengineering systems are the deciding factor.

Plenty of survival games let you collect alien plants.

Far fewer let you ask what happens if you start redesigning them.

Survival games have taught us to mine rocks, chop trees, build houses, refine ore, cook questionable mushrooms, and carry seventeen stacks of materials everywhere.

Honeycomb finally asks us to do something more scientific.

Mess with alien genetics and see what happens.

Nothing could possibly go wrong.
