A room full of armed enemies is a much more interesting problem when charging through the door is only one possible answer. Intravenous 3: Borderline puts that choice at the center of a free, standalone prologue: stay hidden, prepare your approach, or survive the firefight you just started.

Developed by Explosive Squat Games and published by HypeTrain Digital, Borderline is scheduled for October 2, 2026 on Steam. Its two missions follow Gideon, a mercenary pursuing revenge, while introducing the direction of the upcoming Intravenous 3. At our pre-launch check on October 2, Steam still showed the prologue waiting to unlock.

Why now: A free, two-mission prologue offers a focused introduction to the next Intravenous. Borderline and the full sequel are separate releases.

Research basis: Official Steam pages, developer announcements, and official trailers. This is a research-based Spotlight, not a hands-on review.

Checked: October 2, 2026, before the prologue unlocked.

Stealth that leaves room for a firefight

Borderline’s official description puts light, sound, patrols, distractions, gadgets, and the environment in the same toolbox. It also gives you the option to fight openly. Positioning, ammunition, and weapon choice matter once shooting starts. That combination is the reason to pay attention: planning and improvisation both have a place here.

There is a clear family resemblance to Hotline Miami: an overhead view, lethal encounters, and the need to understand a dangerous space quickly. Intravenous gives that familiar setup a different emphasis. Its stealth systems make the preparation before a fight part of the appeal, rather than treating every room mainly as an invitation to attack.

Two missions, one revenge story

Gideon once worked protecting a corrupt politician. Borderline follows him after he has lost everything, with revenge as his remaining purpose. It is a blunt crime-thriller premise, and a useful fit for a prologue: the motivation is immediate, leaving room for the two missions to introduce the gameplay.

There is a practical reason to check it now. In its September 15 announcement, the developer reported more than 5,000 playtest participants and over 100 bug fixes during the test. That does not establish launch quality, but it gives the release some context beyond a store-page promise. The public prologue is the next opportunity to see how the work holds up.

What the sequel is building toward

Borderline is meant to introduce improvements coming to Intravenous 3. The full game’s Steam page currently lists Q2 2027 and follows Steve and Sean through a manhunt. Its announced systems include mission follow-ups influenced by your actions, expanded character builds, coordinated enemy behavior, and an adaptive Xtrullor soundtrack.

The developer’s mobility preview offers a more concrete example of the direction. Intravenous 3 allows weapons and most gadgets to be used while prone, and expands climbing and vaulting to most objects. Reloading while prone carries a commitment: once started, the reload must finish. Those changes suggest more routes and more flexibility, paired with a risk you still need to manage.

Where to start with Intravenous

If Borderline catches your attention, you have several ways to explore the series. The original Intravenous establishes its mix of shadows, environmental interaction, and harsh gunfights. It is the chronological starting point, and its official description explicitly draws on early Splinter Cell.

Intravenous 2 develops that foundation with two protagonists, skill progression, weapon modifications, and Sean’s bullet-time ability. It makes sense as the next full game to investigate if you want more context for the series’ tactical choices.

For another free introduction, Intravenous 2: Mercenarism is the standalone prologue to the second game. There is also Intravenous 2: IV1 Remaster, which brings the original campaign into the sequel with revised levels and other refinements. That remaster is DLC requiring Intravenous 2.

These games share an overhead perspective and dangerous encounters, but they reward different instincts. Choosing between them is easier if you decide whether you want restraint, aggressive momentum, or the tension of planning an infiltration.

Police Stories: restraint under pressure

Police Stories is the strongest adjacent pick if reading a room interests you more than rushing it. You identify threats, seek surrender, protect civilians, and use police equipment. It also offers co-op. Where Gideon’s premise points toward revenge, Police Stories asks you to control a dangerous situation without treating everyone inside it as a target.

Hotline Miami and OTXO: lean into the attack

The original Hotline Miami is the obvious reference for fast, lethal overhead action. Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is another route into that series if its particular blend of violence and style is what you want more of.

OTXO takes a different path with roguelite runs, randomized room arrangements, unlockable abilities, and a slow-motion Focus mechanic. It is a better direction to investigate if you want repeated combat runs and changing builds. Borderline’s hook is the ability to prepare a stealthy approach before committing to combat; OTXO’s is the combat run itself.

Who should give Borderline a look?

Borderline looks most relevant to players who enjoy observing an encounter before making a move, then accepting that the move might go wrong. The systems advertised here favor an interest in positioning and preparation. If your favorite part of an action game is recovering from a bad decision with a better one, that is a strong reason to investigate.

The trade-offs are just as clear. Two missions mean a limited introduction. A single-player prologue will not fill the co-op role of Police Stories. And if waiting for patrols sounds tedious, the stealth side may interest you less than the faster action of Hotline Miami or OTXO. The free release gives you a way to answer those questions without buying a full campaign first.

The strongest reason to watch Borderline is the connection between its two halves: the careful approach and the dangerous fight. A good tactical stealth game makes both worth understanding. These two missions are a small test of whether Intravenous’ next chapter can make you care about the seconds before the first shot as much as the seconds after it.
