Where Winds Meet, developed by Everstone Studio and published by NetEase, dives deep into this legendary world, blending ancient philosophy with high-flying action.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to fight with honor, style, and a touch of magic, you’re in the right place.

First things first

Where Winds Meet - Gameplay Trailer | PS5 Games

Everstone Studio, a game dev team from China, knows how to build worlds that feel like living and breathing universes. Where Winds Meet isn’t just another action RPG, but it’s a full-on Wuxia experience!

A free-to-play game, Where Winds Meet is set during the wild Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms era, so we can expect drama, sword fights, and some serious soul-searching.

NetEase is publishing the game and it’s coming to PC, PS5, and mobile, so yeah, no excuses, you’ll be able to play it wherever you are!

Honestly? I’m hyped.

What does Wuxia mean, exactly?

This word is probably new to many of us, so let’s start by explaining it.

Wuxia, pronounced “woo-shyah,” is a Chinese word that basically means “martial heroes.” It mixes “wu,” meaning “martial,” and “xia,” meaning “chivalrous hero.”

It’s a creative genre that’s been part of Chinese culture for ages. It encompasses books, TV shows, and games, of course.

At the heart of Wuxia there are brave warriors, usually sword fighters, wandering monks, rebels or martial artists. The most important thing to them is a strong sense of honor.

They follow a strict moral code, protect the innocent, confront corrupt rules and go on personal journey to find out the answer to the “Who am I really?” question.

Plus, Wuxia combat reflects inner balance, discipline and moral choices. The characters often face dilemmas which test their honor, beliefs, and resolve.

It’s often compared to Kung Fu.

But instead of just punching and kicking Wuxia warriors can fly through the air, run on water, and fight like they’re dancing.

It’s less about brute force and more about elegance and meaning hidden in every move.

And I have to say it all looks truly astonishing!

Combat mechanics and the skill tree in Where Winds Meet

Fighting in this game is the definition of Wuxia. It’s like a beautiful dance!

You don’t just swing your sword, but you jump across rooftops or slide over water like it’s nothing.

And the weapons? You’ll be shocked! You can even fight with umbrellas that block and strike or fans that slice with such a style.

Want more? Here you go: you can also use instruments that hit enemies with sound waves.

Wild, right?

Where Winds Meet boasts huge freedom of movement, an adaptive combat system, and what’s really impressive, a rich skill tree, all with that Wuxia atmosphere.

Here’s a list of unique gameplay mechanics:

Parkour elements — you can run, jump, climb and pull off quick dodges from the start.

Qinggong movement (AKA “the art of light body”) — you can run along walls, leap great distances, perform air dashes and climb vertical surfaces. However, you need to unlock and upgrade this skill in the skill tree.

Environmental interaction — the terrain and weather actually change how you fight and move. It means no two battles will ever feel the same!

Flexible combat — forget fixed combos! You can mix and match moves on the fly, adapting to the enemy you’re currently fighting.

When it comes to the skill tree, you’ve got four main schools, each representing a different martial arts philosophy. Plus, there are eight (!) different playstyles.

For instance, Sword Mystery, focusing on classic Wuxia dueling style, is fast and elegant.

Mystic Arts Playstyle unlocks supernatural abilities like energy blasts, gravity-defying leaps, and certain control techniques (you can use them to, say, freeze enemies in place or redirect their attacks).

Each school has its own preferred weapon types and skill sets, but you can also get weapons as loot from enemies, quests, or exploration. It’s a perfect mix of movie vibes and RPG progression.

Summing up, Where Winds Meet starts simple. You can run, jump and fight. The flashy Wuxia moves come later as you unlock them, and that’s when things get wild!

Cinematic inspirations

The first time when I saw the Where Winds Meet trailer, I had almost immediate flashback to watching Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon many years ago.

Those scenes where they’re almost flying above the treetops — I loved them That film, directed by Ang Lee, had this characteristic dreamlike energy.

This game shows the same kind of magic!

And then, there’s also House of Flying Daggers, directed by Zhang Yimou, where every fighting scene looks like an energetic dancing style. The game taps into the same vibe.

And that’s what makes it so impressive!

What’s more, Chinese television has produced countless Wuxia series known for their exciting stories, fantastic costumes, and brilliant martial arts scenes.

Many of them are based on books written by Jin Yong, a famous Chinese writer. His most popular stories are The Legend of the Condor Heroes and The Smiling, Proud Wanderer.

One thing is certain: these themes of honor, love, and courage are easy to understand and enjoy, even if you’re not familiar with Chinese culture. Right?

Cultural impact

I think it’s very important to highlight that Wuxia isn’t just entertainment, but a reflection of deep Chinese philosophical traditions that have shaped this culture for many, many centuries.

Three major ones, especially:

· Confucianism — it’s all about doing your duty, showing respect, and keeping things peaceful in the society. It’s like a moral compass that helps people know their place and act with honor.

· Taoism — it teaches you to go with the flow. Literally. It’s about living in harmony with nature and tapping into your inner strength without forcing things.

· Buddhism — it reminds us to let go of attachments, be kind to others, and focus on reaching a deeper understanding of life. It’s more about the journey within than chasing stuff outside.

Final thoughts

As we can see, Wuxia isn’t just a genre. I think it’s some kind of a philosophy in motion.

Where Winds Meets doesn’t just let you fight, but invites you to feel, reflect and move with purpose. Every leap, every strike, and every moment of silence and respite between battles feels like it carries centuries of wisdom!

I simply can’t wait for the game to drop. It feels like living a myth instead of just playing!

The coolest thing about Where Winds Meet is that it’s not stuck in one lane.

The developers at Everstone Studio are definitely thinking long-term. There’s a seasonal road map, which means new combat styles and fresh story arcs will be coming over time.

So yeah, the game keeps evolving!

What about you? Hyped for it as much as I am?
