Gamers waiting for their dream video game’s official release often encounter information that it’s available in Early Access. What does this mysterious term mean?

It’s not uncommon for users of platforms like Steam to discover that the game they want to play is available in Early Access. But does that mean you can play it? What is Early Access? It’s time to find out!

Early Access Meaning in Games

An Early Access title is nothing more than a video game in progress. That means the developer made it available to the public before the official release date – and therefore, it’s not complete, and its every element may change in the future.

Still, players can buy and play it despite missing features. In this way, they can actively participate in the game’s creation process by providing the developer with the necessary feedback and information about the encountered bugs. Also, purchasing the game in this form can support the developer financially.

Types of Early Access Systems

Titles released in this system differ depending on the development stage they are currently in. Therefore, you may encounter several types of games in Early Access:

  • Pre-Alpha – The earliest stage of a game’s development, usually subjected to internal testing only by the developer. Sometimes, the creators release such an unstable version to players for initial testing.
  • Alpha – The phase during which the developer usually makes the title available to the broader audience for testing.
  • Beta – The game is close to its ultimate form and official release, but requires final testing by players and developers before the big launch day arrives.

Games Released in Early Access

This game spent three years in Early Access before its official release in 2023. But that time was worth the wait! Often compared to other top RPG titles like The Witcher 3, it shines with complex choices, memorable characters, gorgeous graphics, and an immersive storyline.

Released in 2020, Hades has been available in Early Access since 2018. Today, it’s one of the most time-worthy roguelike dungeon crawler representatives, following the adventures of Hades’ son trying to escape the underworld. Also, the sequel is now available in Early Access on Steam!

Subnautica spent over two years in Early Access to become one of the biggest 2018 releases. Definitely play it if you’re craving a survival underwater adventure! Moreover, you’ll soon be able to try out its sequel in Early Access on Steam.

Playing video games in Early Access is the best way to witness their worlds, mechanics, and storylines develop over the months. It’s also great for participating in their development process and influencing their final form. Doesn’t that sound tempting?
