A break or stagger meter is often present during combat sequences in modern action and role-playing games. What exactly is its meaning? Let’s find out together!
What is Break Bar?
Break meter, or a break bar, is a visual indicator that fills up as the player skillfully performs various actions against their enemy. Applying pressure on an opponent through attacks, blocks, parries, abilities usage, and so on, brings them closer to becoming vulnerable or broken – this state is often called a Guard Break.
Filling the break meter often requires precision and stamina management skills, as particular actions, for example, hitting an enemy’s weak spot, tend to fill the meter quicker. Once the meter fills up completely, the enemy becomes susceptible to increased damage, critical hits, finishers, and other forms of attacks. It can also be immobilized or stunned, allowing the player to deliver multiple attacks with no interruptions.
The break meter is sometimes called a stagger or posture gauge.
Break Meter Meaning in Games
The break meter mechanic is present in various video games with immersive combat systems. Here are some examples of productions utilizing such feature:
- FINAL FANTASY VII Remake – the stagger gauge appears beneath an enemy’s health bar and can be filled by focusing certain attacks, magic, or abilities on their weaknesses. Once the gauge is filled, enemies become staggered and take extra damage for a short time.
- Monster Hunter – while lacking a visual break meter, the series utilizes a concept similar to a Guard Break. Specific body parts or enemy’s armor can be attacked repeatedly until the point of getting broken (or severed) is reached, resulting in weakening the monster’s movements or attacks.
- Nioh – both the player and their enemies have a Ki gauge, an equivalent to a stamina gauge. Depleting the Ki of an enemy causes a guard break or stagger, leaving them vulnerable to critical strikes or grapples.
While the meter can often be slowly filled just by performing regular attacks, the point of break meter and Guard Break is to add a bit of strategy and an extra layer of depth to the game’s combat system. Skillful timing, precision, and knowledge of the enemy’s weaknesses is key to success here!
