Video games consist of many elements, including the game map. But what can you use it for?
The map is a common element of most video games – you can encounter it in RPGs, strategies, first-person shooters, or survival titles. But what is it, and how do you distinguish it from an in-game world? Time to find out!
Map Meaning in Games
A map in video games is a virtual space where the action takes place. It provides a spatial layout for gameplay environments, including various details, like realistic terrain, abstract locations, and fantastic worlds. Simply put, they exist to let you explore and interact with the in-game world.
What is a Game Map?
The map is the digital area you discover directly as the playable character. Unlike the mini-map, you explore it in real-time by traversing its surface. It’s like the raw design of the in-game surroundings, filled with various locations, structures, and types of environments. However, that doesn’t mean it’s also the game world, as the latter covers the entire gameplay environment involving NPCs, other players, and events.
For example, games like The Witcher 3, DOOM, or Assassin’s Creed have a map, while text, logic, or rhythm titles don’t. You can’t explore the latter’s environment, as their gameplay works on different rules.
Titles with Game Map
PUBG
It’s an intense Battle Royale game in which up to 100 players compete to become the last man (or team) standing on the battlefield. The title features eight unique maps, each with a different size and terrain. And the best part is the map constantly shrinks!
Apex Legends
This Battle Royale game lets its players fight for survival on a shrinking map as one of many pre-designed Legends. The title offers eleven different maps, each equipped with unique features.
Civilization
In this Civilization title, players develop their civilizations across the ages on pre-defined or procedurally generated maps. They can also customize their layouts to their preferences or even design their own maps for a more personalized experience!
As you can see, a game map is a digital environment you explore during gameplay. The term doesn’t include the mini-map or the events and NPCs encountered throughout your adventure. Furthermore, maps can vary (even within a single game) regarding their layout and size. Now, play your favorite game and see for yourself!
